  • The latest Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch with Retina display gets a Force Touch trackpad and better battery capacity than its predecessor, but it faces stiff competition.

  • Current 15-inch MacBook Pro owners won't feel the need to upgrade, but the handful of tweaks included here keep this expensive system at the top of the list for powerful midsize laptops.

  • - The highlight, of course, is its Retina Display, which is a 15.4in IPS affair with a stunning resolution of 2,880 x 1,800 – that’s 220ppi.
    - Getting to the glass touchpad, meanwhile, it’s still the best we’ve used, rivalled only by the cream of the Windows laptop crop.

  • There isn't another computer we know of that's this powerful and also this compact. With a starting price of $2,999, going all the way up to nearly $10,000, it's quite pricey, but for videographers, photographers, animators and other creative professionals, it could be well worth the investment.

  • There are other high-res laptops out there, but this year’s more powerful and affordable 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro is one of the best of the bunch, and makes a compelling case for upgrading from the 13-inch Air.

  • Perfect for creative professionals with money to burn.

  • The Sony VAIO Flip 15 supersizes the convertible laptop, with a large screen that can work in various poses. It's starting to approach the convertible sweet spot, but it needs a few more iterations to become lighter and easier to hold.

The Flip series has an innovative design, but the 15-inch version doesn't make much sense unless you need the discrete graphics or the 2,880 x 1,620 screen.

  • Sony's unique attempt at a big-screen hybrid looks great and is reasonably priced, but it works better as a laptop than a tablet.

  • A sense of style raises this otherwise median mainstream laptop above the crowd.

  • The Sony VAIO E Series laptops are a worthy choice for a multimedia laptop, with a built-in camera, microphone, BD-ROM drive and a fast processor.

  • The Samsung Series 9 NP900X3D is an attractive 13-inch laptop that is easy to cast as Samsung's alternative to the MacBook Air. However, it shouldn't be dismissed as being all about style. Its combo of low weight, thin frame, a matt screen and SSD storage makes it incredibly portable and convenient. This helps to offset that it doesn't offer a great amount of power for the price.

  • You can tell, can't you? I really like the Samsung Series 9 and it's hard to beat as one of the most ultraportable 13" Ultrabooks for style, quality, performance and extreme light weight. The only drawback? It lacks a touch screen, and Windows 8 is easier to use with touch. That said, if you spend most of your time in the traditional Windows desktop UI with Word, Excel, Visual Studio, Photoshop and other Windows staples as your constant companions, you probably won't miss the touch screen.

The Samsung Series 9 2012 is a great laptop with a stunning design. It's not always easy to see how things really "feel" in the real world when all you have are photos and videos, and Samsung should do anything it can to put these in people's hands. It is amazing to see that a 15" laptop can be so light (3.63lbs), and yet feel so well built.

As nice as it is, it's not perfect: the display view angle and the touchpad driver would be the main thing that I would like to see improved in a subsequent update.
