  • It's frustrating that such spectacular contrast on an affordable TV should go to waste like this. The L1350U (MSRP $499.99) renders some truly beautiful blacks, but its colors just can't keep up. How sad! Like a magnificent race horse with a fear of circles... But in practical terms, regular content appeared washed out and unrealistic, and even Blu-ray discs lacked vibrancy of color. What a waste!

Don't be wooed by this TV's pretty price tag.

  • Toshiba's basic, inexpensive L2300U series LED LCD TV seems appealing to budget shoppers on paper, but better values are available.

  • The Toshiba L2300U series may be entry-level, but its picture quality is not. It seems like Toshiba has taken pains to avoid trapping consumers in a feature fight: "This one is 3D but not smart, this one is both, this one feeds your dog, this one is 3D but doesn't come in 1080p," etc. The L2300U doesn't do anything extra except play back USB content. Its on-board software is basic, and cheap. The design? Also cheap. The result, though, is that you're only paying for the sweet, sweet panel embedded inside.

  • The Toshiba L2300U series gets you into a big-screen HDTV for under a grand, but don't expect stellar performance or lots of features.

  • Toshiba's L4300U is a tough pill to swallow. It offers a design that some will find very appealing, but its smart platform and menu interface are downright frustrating. Fortunately, it has decent picture quality. That's like a sandwich with great bread, but rotten meat.

At least the L4300U isn't too expensive. A 39-inch model retails for $699, but Toshiba sells it for $519. This is a reasonable price for a 39-inch display, especially for one that has an acceptable picture quality and top-notch speakers.

  • We were impressed with the Toshiba 50L2200U (MSRP $899). This Toshiba produces good colors, has deep blacks, and gets modestly bright. It's also easy on the power consumption, which is a bonus since this TV's menu interface isn't so easy on the eyes. Aside from a few aesthetic details, the 50L2200U didn't give us much to complain about. There is the nagging issue of an unresponsive remote, but that was our biggest complaint with this TV.

  • The Toshiba L2200U series is a barebones HDTV line with few features and middling performance, even if the price is reasonable.

  • The bare-bones Toshiba L5200 series offers respectable value for the money with fine picture quality for an edge-lit LED TV.

  • The 46L5200 is a fairly barebones model from Toshiba with 120Hz processing and a standard black framing bezel. It's a nice looking TV with similar features to the 417 model from last year. LED backlighting is edge-lit. It's an economic model with pretty good black levels and brightness for an LED/LCD.

  • The 50L5200U is an affordable, no-frills television from Toshiba thatâ??s available at a surprisingly low MSRP of $1099. We recently reviewed Toshibaâ??s flagship series for this year, the L7200U, and it proved to be a very high-quality smart TV for the comparably low price it retails for. In that regard, we were very excited to see if the mid-range L5200U series would match that same quality.
