Most of the consumer point and shoot models start with at least 6 Megapixel resolution these days. Most experts affirm that for a smaller sensor as is used in most point and shoot digital cameras resolutions in the range of 6-8 Megapixel produces the best results even in lower light. The best digital cameras with resolution at least 5-6 MP can produce some better results compared to the 14 MP and above as offered by some megazooms.
The best 5 MP digital cameras are adequate if you are an amateur photographer unless you want your prints to be poster-size. In this case it is better to opt for a digital SLR which has a superior image quality due to the better sensors and lens technology used.
