Archos, an anagram from the founder Henri Crohas last name was established in 1988 in France. One of the major players in the portable multimedia player segment, it has concentrated on manufacturing tablets, mp3/,mp4 players, PDA's, netbooks.

The Archos mp3 players boasts of a hard drive or flash storage capacity. With memory ranging from 2GB to around 8GB, these mp3 players lets you have carry around the entire music collection. There are higher capacity models such as the Archos jukebox which has around 200GB storage capable of storing more than 5000 songs.

Typically the best mp3 players have an LCD or touch screen display which makes for easy navigation and viewing of the various settings related to its operation. The screen size varies between 1.8 to 4 inches and displays the videos/photos in vivid colors. The smooth and simple interface allows you to navigate through the folders or the playlist. The USB allows easy transfer of music/videos/photos making it a pleasant experience. The integrated audio equalizer makes listening to all of your favorite songs and podcasts with optimal sound.

The rechargeable battery with capacity of around 15 - 20 hrs of playback makes it workhorse for long duration listening/viewing. This is a plus point if you want to use the audio recorder facility to record any lectures or meetings or live jigs for later hearing using the internal microphone. This also allows for recording directly from FM radio.

Some of the best Archos media players have an apps store for accessing online music or video content. The normal supported formats are mp3, wav, mpeg, avi, flv, jpeg, bmp, gif. The rather uncommon RMVB (RealMedia Variable Bitrate) format for videos is also supported. The .txt and .lrc (for lyric files) can also be displayed in these mp3 players so that you can have a karoake going on when listening to the music videos.

Considering the above mentioned points we at Reviewgist have consolidated the top Archos mp3 players and listed them along with their specifications as below.

  • - The Archos 5 requires a proprietary USB cable for charging and transferring content, the glossy design is quickly marred with fingerprints, older Archos accessories are incompatible, some applications are still in beta, and you'll need to pay extra to activate many of the player's more desirable features..
    - The 800x600 resolution display on the Archos 5 is bright and crisp, rivaled only by the Cowon A3 when it comes to clarity and color.
    - Video playback on the Archos 5 is stunning.

  • - Archos's new interface looks more modern and runs more smoothly than the ones in earlier players.
    - Video looks stunning on the Archos 5.
    - Even the video menu looks impressive: A moving-image thumbnail plays the next video that's highlighted on the menu.

  • - The Archos 5's menu system is easy enough to navigate, but it includes unnecessary menu options for the various accessories you can buy for the player.

  • - The external speakers (situated on either side of the touchscreen) were loud enough, but sounded small and plasticky - maybe okay for dialog but not for music.
    - It was necessary to press the buttons slowly and forthrightly, and we found ourselves needing to repeat touches far too often.

    - Browsing becomes almost seamless with the ARM® Cortex™ processor and the Adobe Flash™ 9 video support.

  • The best portable movie player around, albeit one that's too big to be carried anywhere and everywhere on a regular basis. Unfortunately, the touchscreen interface and additional features don't quite measure up.

  • - It's also heavy, the screen resolution could be sharper, there's no tactile control for volume, and the Web browser costs extra..
    - While its imposing size makes the 705 WiFi one of the least-portable portable music players available, its sound quality and breadth of music features equals that of most of our preferred MP3 players.

  • Rating Unavailable

    - The brushed metal casing looks and feels robust while exterior controls are limited to a power on/off button and an LCD/TV switch, everything else being controlled through the touchscreen.

  • - The majority of the features found on the Archos 705 WiFi are identical to the excellent features found on the Archos 605 WiFi (the recipient of a 2007 Editors' Choice).

  • The Archos 2 doesn't excel in any area, but it's very cheap and the quality isn't at all bad for the price. There are more exciting players out there, but it's worth considering if you're on a tight budget.

  • Rating Unavailable

    - The Archos 2 features 8 GB of built-in storage, plus sports a microSD/microSDHS card slot for additional storage.

  • For $149, the Archos 32 is a pretty good deal, so long as you're willing to live with some trade-offs. It's a solid portable media player that can also surf the web and access (some) Android apps. We especially like the wide range of supported audio and video formats. You just have to be willing to put up with a lackluster touch keyboard and a resistive display that kicks back reflections.

  • The A5 isn't perfect, but is comes very close. The device looks and feels superb, media playback is excellent, the internet experience is one of the best available on any current mobile device and the touchscreen UI is almost beyond criticism. Perhaps the screen lacks that last degree of fidelity found on the Cowon A3, and points have to be deducted for the lacklustre codec support, the proprietary USB cable, the poor earphones and lack of a supplied mains charger.
