  • The HP Pavilion x360 13t offers very good performance for the price and impressive audio, in a highly flexible, 13.3-inch design.

  • The HP Spectre x360 delivers a high-end, flexible Windows laptop design at a mainstream price with a battery that runs all day.

  • We like the HP’s divisive red design, and its hinged mechanism and build quality are both good, but this budget system is too slow to rival the superior

  • The HP Stream 11 is a $200 Windows laptop that's built to compete with Chromebooks on features and price. It does pretty well on its own, but Microsoft sweetens the deal with free OneDrive storage and Office 365 Personal for a year.

  • There's a war going on between Microsoft and Google, and because of that shoppers will ultimately win. But is the HP Stream 11 a winner? In many ways, yes. This ultraportable is more versatile than a Chromebook, and I like the comfortable keyboard and loud speakers. And while the playful design isn't for everyone, it will definitely stand out in a crowd.

  • At $200, the Stream 11 is a good deal, especially compared to pricier Chromebooks, but beware that it comes with many of the same trade-offs as other budget laptops, including a low-quality display and slow boot-up time.

  • The HP Stream 13 is a very inexpensive full Windows 8.1 ultraportable laptop, but its long battery life, looks, and speed resemble that of a much pricier system.

  • For those who prefer Windows OS, the HP Stream 13 offers better software flexibility than Chromebooks for a comparable price. For $230, you get more high-quality apps that can run offline, plus a comfortable keyboard, strong speakers and fairly smooth performance in a fun design. The two things that hold this system back are its dim display and below-average battery life (though 6.5 hours is decent). Is the Stream 13 a Chromebook killer? Not quite.

  • The HP SlateBook 14-p010nr is a $429 Nvidia Tegra 4-equipped Android OS laptop. But when $300 will get you a fully functional Chromebook, and $450 is a prime price for a Windows notebook, we're not sure there's a real need for it.

  • The HP Pavilion 10z may be a very basic, budget laptop, but it's a Windows 8.1-equipped system with touch capability, selling for around the same price as a Chromebook.
