For $300, the 3M Streaming Projector powered by Roku is fun and reasonably priced. The Roku Streaming Stick, or the "Rock You" as my kids say, is the projector's main selling point. When considering this product, you must decide what you expect from it. This sturdy device is best for a "driveway" movie with the kids or an end-of-the-summer pool party. It does not belong in a business meeting, nor would you want to use it for any kind of serious home theater movie viewing.

  • The 3M Streaming Projector packs the full power of a Roku box in a pico projector, making for an undeniably cool gadget, even with its limited battery life.

I review a lot of projectors, and rarely am I as amused or excited by them as I am by the 3M Streaming Projector. It's so. . . neat. It can't replace a "real" projector, of course, but for something portable, it's awesome. Tether it wirelessly with your phone (presuming your phone can act as a wireless hub), and you could have big-screen streaming video just about anywhere. How cool is that?

  • The emerging new category the ML500 is part of, and the ML500 in particular, fills a niche that needs filling, with an appealing balance of size, weight, price, and brightness. Compared to pocket projectors, it's only a little bigger and heavier, but it's a lot brighter. Compared to traditional lamp-based portable projectors, it's significantly lighter and smaller than all but a few, and less expensive. And although it isn't as bright as most lamp-based projectors, it's bright enough to throw a reasonable size image that can stand up to ambient light.

  • I found the Optoma ML500 to be a very interesting projector to use. It compact size makes it fairly easy to set up and it offers a variety of source inputs, as well as having its own built-in speaker. The ML500 also makes a great traveling companion as it and its accessories easily pack up it in its provided carry bag. You can also take a camera tripod along and use it mount and place the projector more easily in a variety of environments.

In addition, its light output and video performance is adequate for general use, but it does fall somewhat short as a dedicated home theater projector.

  • The Optoma ML550 certainly has a wide range of features, but such flexibility comes at a high price. It's much more expensive than the Asus P1M, but we think the ML550 justifies the extra expense as it not only connects to a far greater range of devices, but it can also be used in all types of lighting conditions. It wins a Best Buy award.

The Joybee GP2 raises the bar in the mini-projector category with optional battery operation, a broad range of source connections, and Apple iPhone/iPod docking. It also has an ample internal memory for many applications. It is not the brightest or least expensive mini-projector, but it does redefine the word "versatility" in its class.

  • The BenQ Joybee GP2 is a versatile palmtop projector that packs an iPhone dock and has a solid suite of connectivity choices.

  • BenQ's tiny GP2 is a jack of all trades and master of few, but given the size, price and versatility of this LED mini projector, there's not much that can compete. Added to the fact that none of its flaws are fatal, it's a worthy investment whether you want a highly portable home cinema projector or business presentation device. As long as you're aware of its limitations, we highly recommend it.

The MS517 is pretty well designed and maintenance free, aside from having to change the lamp. Changing the lamp is a little more work on the BenQ MS517 compared to other projectors on the market, but the design, and look of the projector reflects this. I like to think that it is kind of the like the iPhone. Simple, beautiful, but ultimately not easy to tamper with. That could be a positive in a classroom environment where lots of different people are going to be accessing the projector.

  • The MS517's strongest features are its low price and how much it delivers for that price, including near-excellent data image quality, usable video quality, portability, and a long lamp life. You can get a more capable projector if you spend more, but it will be hard to find one this capable as this price.

On the minus side, if you need good quality 3D you'll want to look elsewhere, and the issues with audio mean that if you need sound you'll need an external audio system.

  • The BenQ MS517, a budget DLP projector geared to classrooms, provides solid data image quality, and video quality suitable for short to mid-length clips.

  • The Optoma S303 provides solid data image quality, portability, and a good set of connection ports for a budget data projector.
