The bottom line: As a highly configurable budget-range black box, Dell's Inspiron 1545 laptop line can be a good value--as long as you don't pile on the upgrades.

Peak volume levels were enough to fill a small room, but if you plan on sharing a movie inside a dorm room, it might be wise to connect the laptop to a set of external surround speakers. The hard drive and optical drive are removable through individual sections with their own retaining screws. The plastics used in the construction of the chassis feel pretty durable and should hold up well over time, but the glossy finish around the keyboard and palmrest did have a tendency to show fine scrat... *

An HDMI port makes it simple to transfer high-quality audio and video to an HDTV, giving the laptop a second function as a Blu-ray movie player. On a screen this size it's unlikely that even the sharpest eye will be able to tell the difference, though. *

The Dell Inspiron 15 is likely the best bang for buck you'll get for AU$1000, from its battery life to its upgrade options. We do miss the numpad, but the rest is perfect for the budget conscious user.

The bottom line: Taking consumer complaints to heart, Dell updates its mainstream 15-inch laptop with the Inspiron 1525. It's thinner, lighter, and less expensive than its predecessor.
