A striking feat of engineering that's sure to garner attention in a stylish home or on a multimedia-intensive sales call, the Dell XPS M2010 is simply too expensive and impractical to be anything more than a curio for the rest of us.

On first inspection, the big machine resembles a full-fledged desktop, yet it closes gracefully and can be carried like a huge clamshell notebook (with a handle). The XPS features the fastest Intel Core Duo processor available for mobile PCs, along with 2 gigabytes of RAM and RAID-enabled hard drives (200GB, 7,200-rpm) to handle challenging tasks. *

My overall conclusion for the HP Pavilion dv7 notebook is really good. *

The Bottom Line

Colors are bold and video plays smoothly, and the panel's wide viewing angle performance means you can watch videos with friends without experiencing color shifting or a darkened screen. It was unable to run FutureMark's PCMark Vantage benchmark test. *

The power button and QuickPlay launch key are discrete controls that are visible at all times. *

The design is revolutionary, but Apple's MacBook Air will appeal to a smaller, more specialized audience than the standard MacBook, thanks to a stripped-down set of connections and features.

Buying advice: Apple has cut a lot of corners to meet its goal of the thinnest laptop. If you don't mind paying a high price (as usual bulked up further in the UK) and living without no CD drive and only one USB slot, then go right ahead.

The 12-inch PowerBook was so small and light that carrying my laptop around with me became an afterthought. *

The bottom line: Although it's expensive for a 15-inch multimedia laptop, the Blu-ray and game-playing capabilities of the attractive 15.4-inch Sony Vaio NW160J make it a worthy portable entertainment system.

With its excellent screen, Blu-ray playback, and low price, the VAIO NW180J/S is a standout media notebook.

Battery life though is mediocre; we managed to get two and a half hours out of it, which is acceptable, but still nowhere near the big leagues of Acer's Timeline series. Mediocre battery. *
