  • The latest iPod Touch is the best iPod ever, and as close to a phoneless iPhone 5 as you can get -- but its high price makes it a tough call versus cheaper tablets with larger screens.

  • There's a new iPod touch on the block and, in many of the ways that most matter, it's a doozy. While it's tempting to compare it to a phone-less iPhone 5-particularly given its similar height, weight, thickness, and Lightning connector-the iPod touch is a device intended for a different audience. An audience that skews younger than the iPhone's and one that desires a cool media and game player that can stand on its own rather than feel like an iPhone's hobbled sibling. And for this reason, a comparison to the fourth-generation (4G) iPod touch is more apt.

  • When it comes to a device to play music and video, you can't really ask for more than the iPod touch delivers. This is the best screen on any media device of its size, there's decent storage capacity on both models and the graphical power means this can play games that look as impressive as any handheld games console. It's a bit of a clich, but the iPod touch really is a fantastic little gadget.

  • - The Archos 5 requires a proprietary USB cable for charging and transferring content, the glossy design is quickly marred with fingerprints, older Archos accessories are incompatible, some applications are still in beta, and you'll need to pay extra to activate many of the player's more desirable features..
    - The 800x600 resolution display on the Archos 5 is bright and crisp, rivaled only by the Cowon A3 when it comes to clarity and color.
    - Video playback on the Archos 5 is stunning.

  • - Archos's new interface looks more modern and runs more smoothly than the ones in earlier players.
    - Video looks stunning on the Archos 5.
    - Even the video menu looks impressive: A moving-image thumbnail plays the next video that's highlighted on the menu.

  • - The Archos 5's menu system is easy enough to navigate, but it includes unnecessary menu options for the various accessories you can buy for the player.

  • - Couldn't play back as many file types as competing products.
    - You can connect up to two mass USB storage devices--including a camera--at one time. 720p/1080i HD output.
    - On a positive note, we liked how the Seagate displays a preview of the file on the right side of the screen when you highlight that file in the menu.

  • - Unfortunately, not all the features were yet up to snuff in my hands-on with the unit.
    - Navigation is relatively simple, and functions are for the most part logically placed, though I missed front-panel controls for scenarios in which the remote's battery is dead.
    - The Theater+'s on-screen interface is attractive; however, the text and some of the icons are a bit small.

  • - Excellent integration with the FreeAgent hard drive range • Great for photos and videos on your TV.
    - Lack of video codec support • Lack of HD video playback • Too expensive for what it is.
    - The image was particularly soft and didn't seem especially smooth.
    - We think this little box is pretty well thought-out.
    - It's simple, works brilliantly well and won't confuse even the most backwards of technophobes.

  • - The external speakers (situated on either side of the touchscreen) were loud enough, but sounded small and plasticky - maybe okay for dialog but not for music.
    - It was necessary to press the buttons slowly and forthrightly, and we found ourselves needing to repeat touches far too often.

    - Browsing becomes almost seamless with the ARM® Cortex™ processor and the Adobe Flash™ 9 video support.

  • The best portable movie player around, albeit one that's too big to be carried anywhere and everywhere on a regular basis. Unfortunately, the touchscreen interface and additional features don't quite measure up.
