  • The Panasonic SC-BTT190 is a solid Blu-ray system but not one of Panasonic's best. Aesthetically it doesn't inspire the same levels of excitement as an LG or Samsung, its sound quality loses polish at volumes other speakers take in their stride, and the lack of HDMI inputs and built-in Wi-Fi makes the step-up SC-BTT290 a more appealing prospect.

But the inclusion of DLNA, Viera Connect, iPod support, Skype and the impressive 3D Cinema Surround are not to be sniffed at, plus it's incredibly easy to setup and use.

  • The Sony BDV-E780W is one of three 3D-compliant home theater systems (BDV-E780W, BDV-E580, and BDV-E280) released together in early 2011. The top unit in the series, this 5.1-channel system features two rear wireless speakers, two 2-way front speakers, a central channel, and a subwoofer.

  • Panasonic's SC-BTT770 offers an easy "set it and forget it" type of install, and an absolutely state of the art Blu-ray 3D player as well as a nice selection of internet streaming options. The wireless speakers are also a nice touch, spreading some of the discrete surround sound to areas where it would be otherwise impossible without visible speaker wires or complicated in-wall wiring.

  • The Onkyo HT-S9300THX is a home-theater-in-a-box (HTIB) released as an upgrade from the HT-S9100THX. It incorporates an improved overlaid graphical user interface, 3D compatibility, and HDMI pass-through functionality while the receiver is in standby mode for automatic source-to-TV switching in standby.

    - It would be nice if it had a couple more analog RCA a/v inputs.
    - Speaker wire connection interface could have been made better.
    - Speakers are quite slim and will compliment a flat-panel display.
    - Auto sound calibration is good for the inexperienced.

  • Rating Unavailable

    - The systems perform exceptionally well in any environment, thanks to the Audyssey 2EQ room correction and calibration system.
