  • The HP Pavilion G6-2248CA is a full-featured laptop with good battery life and a low price. But performance is mediocre even for a budget laptop.

  • The Pavilion g6-2200sg is a good deal and a decent notebook for all looking for a cheap general purpose notebook. It delivers fair system performance, which suffices for most users, works quietly under low load and comes with a contrast-rich display. Furthermore, the Pavilion is also interesting for gamers who do not like to spend 800 to 1000 Euro ( $1050 to $1300) for a fancy gaming computer. The cons of the 15.6-incher are a short warranty period of only 12 months, the lack of GigaBit Ethernet and the inconvenient graphics switch.

The HP Pavilion g6 is a good budget notebook. While there aren't a ton of standout features and extras, it also doesn't have any major issues. Budget notebooks need to cut corners somewhere to come in at an affordable price and HP chose the right places to trim when they made the g6. Students and average home users in need of an affordable notebook should look at the g6, especially as part of back to school and Black Friday promotions.

  • The HP EliteBook 2170p is a well-designed business ultraportable with a terrific keyboard and a solidly resilient chassis, and its reasonable priced and good feature set make it worthy of consideration.

  • Initially we asked the question: how should a mini EliteBook look, adhering to the quality standard of the series? Half of this and half of that would be the answer. Case, input devices, and run times meet the high expectations. What amazes us: after the throttling problems of the 14-inch sister model 8460p (2011) now even the smallest member of the series comes without any such performance losses.

Performance is perhaps the right topic to at least partially justify the high price of the EliteBook.

  • The HP Elitebook 2170p is a light and durable business notebook with above-average battery life, but its small touchpad makes it tough to execute Windows 8 gestures.

  • The HP Envy 4-1043cl ultrabook offers plenty of fine features, like Beats Audio, WiDi 2.0, and generous offerings in software and warranty, not to mention a strong performance boost from Intel's latest third-generation processor. Still, we expected a higher quality display and longer battery life from HP's premium laptop line.

  • Great on the outside, mediocre in all other aspects: the HP Envy 4-1000sg is a mix of good and bad. HP's chassis are usually quite decent - and the Envy 4 is no exception: the aluminum used for the lid and around the palm rest not only looks very classy (and quite suitable for an Ultrabook), but also does its part in making the notebook quite rigid and sturdy. The keyboard and the touchpad also manage to convince.

  • For $799, the HP Envy 4-1030us is a highly portable and stylish Ultrabook that provides snappy performance at a reasonable price. Add to that excellent audio, a comfy backlit keyboard, a cool-running chassis and fairly long battery life, and this could easily be one of our favorite value-priced Ultrabooks. We're just concerned about quality control. If the lid didn't rub against the back of the chassis on the units we tried, we would likely make this system a top pick. Otherwise, the Envy 4 is a very good choice.
