  • The VVX 500 has a standard set of hard keys: a numpad with round buttons that are large and satisfying to use, buttons to control volume, activate headset, speaker, and mute, and finally, a button that takes users to the main 'Home' screen on the touchscreen display.

  • Whether you're on board with combining Flickr and desk phone or not, the GXV 3175 is an exciting product. The Internet browser application is the best one we've tried on a desk phone to date. GXV 3175 to GXV 3175 video calling worked seamlessly (no surprise), and there is evidence that video will play nice with others as well. The phone offers so many features that I'm sure we left a lot of stones unturned. Is it perfect? No, but that's to be expected when you have a device that's trying to be a jack-of-all-trades.

In closing I'd like to return to an impression that I first had some years ago when I first started using IP phones. If you work for a small company, or in a home office, and live on the phone as much as I do, then life is just too short to get by with a marginal phone. You can't appreciate the difference between "good enough" and something that is truly exceptional to use without trying it for yourself. The difference in cost is not as much as you might expect.

  • The overall design successfully incorporates both sharp edges and rounded corners, and gives the phone a very sleek look. The Polycom 550 is probably one of the most visually appealing desk phone we've reviewed so far.
