Best Midrange DSLR Canon Digital Camera

The Canon EOS 550D takes very clear and vibrant photos. The video mode of the Canon EOS 550D is very good - even for capturing some action - and it records in Full HD. It has a wide 3:2 aspect ratio and it's very crisp (it has more than 1 million pixels); you can use it effectively to focus while in Live View mode. *

Canon's EOS 550D digital SLR is aimed at users new to the SLR scene, but it's a very capable camera for all types of shooting scenarios. It excels in dark conditions, it's great for portraits, and it can even be used for sporting and action shots. The Full HD video mode makes it a great hybrid camera for travellers, too.

Verdict: The EOS 550D is an excellent way into the Canon system. High ISO image quality is very good. We shot in an almost dark room at ISO 6400 without any high hopes and found the image perfectly acceptable. *

I think this is just right: I don't think they could have included another important feature without making the Canon 7D look absurd. Our initial impressions are quite good. Very impressive. The Manual and 2,600 Kelvin white balance options were very similar, both producing fairly neutral images. The Canon 7D's hue accuracy is quite good, just a hair less accurate than the 50D. Stills, 1080p video, a full range of ISO shots - it's all here. The afternoon weather on Times Square brought a few clouds overhead, but the auto white balance did a nice job of adjusting to the grey skies. Colors are vibrant despite the overcast skies. With its lightning speed and gorgeous images, there's not much to complain about with the Canon EOS 50D—especially if you already own compatible lenses. Canon markets the 50D as "bridging the gap between the novice and seasoned pro," and to drive that point home, the company has given the camera the look, feel, and heft of a professional camera. Like its predecessor the 40D ($1,099, body only), the 15.1-megapixel 50D is fast, but it brings more to the table, including Live View and an HDMI... *

There's no denying that Canon has a solid, well-built camera here. Still, the rugged built quality, overall range of features, and solid performance of the 50D make it a powerful photographic tool. The body receiver mount is metal and exceptionally solid. The 50D's live view implementation is a significant improvement over the first-generation live view feature on the 40D, with the addition of a contrast-detection AF mode that allows the camera to auto focus without interrupting the on-scree... *

Our test images showed good color saturation and accuracy, under both flash and natural light. Its greatest assets are its wide-ranging controls and its ability to output great image quality. I found the autofocus accurate. Like the EOS 40D, the EOS 50D has a nine-point cross-type autofocus sensor, and in my informal hands-on tests, I found the autofocus accurate. If you're into action photography, put this camera high on your list. Our findings in a nutshell: The Canon EOS 50D is an impressive piece of kit. Colors are nice and saturated, and the subject has a smooth (some may say soft) look to it. The camera is PictBridge-enabled for direct printing to compatible photo printers. Photo quality was excellent on this 8.2 Megapixel camera. Photos were well-exposed, with accurate colors, very low noise levels (even at high ISO sensitivities), and minimal purple fringing. An excellent midrange digital SLR, the 30D has given way to its even more excellent successor, the 40D. However, it remains a great choice if you can find it at a good price.

The image quality is exemplary with exposure, focus and colour all being accurate. The Canon is particularly good at handling saturated colours without bleeding and blurring the edges between adjacent blocks of colour. Skin tones are smooth. *
