  • The budget end of the monitor market is suddenly rife with quality 23- to 24-inch 1080p screens with cheap IPS panels in them. You've got to love the fact that you can pick up a full HD screen running one of the best monitor technologies out there for just over a ton. It certainly makes a huge difference compared to the weak, washed-out 24-inch TN panels we were once grateful to pick up for around £200.

  • When it comes to the best picture quality and absolute convenience, the ViewSonic VA2406M-LED is a little lacking, but the pros outweigh the cons. The LED backlighting is a plus. It gives this monitor an advantage over many other monitors using TN technology by helping reduce power consumption and improve contrast and brightness. It is a good monitor and a solid purchase.

  • The Dell S2440L is constructed to a very high standard, the edge-to-edge glass adding a touch of class to its already very clean minimalist lines. The display itself is capable of impressive performance. It's not the cheapest 24inch display you'll find, but feels well worth the money.

  • We recommend this monitor if you're looking for something that's impressive in appearance, beyond the budget bin in style, and is at least passable in its color performance. The attractive design and staggeringly large contrast ratio that the S2440L tested with justify its price, but its color shortcomings make it a bad choice for graphic design or photo editing, and it certainly isn't the best choice for gaming.

  • The Asus VG23AH nails it in price, features, and 2D performance, but falls flat on its screen in 3D.

  • The Asus VG23AH is a relatively affordable 23-inch monitor offering IPS and 3D technology and a generous selection of video inputs. Color and viewing angle performance is quite good in 2D mode but there's significant crosstalk when viewing 3D images from a side angle.
