  • With the latest firmware, the Linksys EA6500 makes a decent contender among the handful of its peers.

  • The cloud as management console with Cisco Connect Cloud raises the bar for router management and that capability coupled with fine performance makes the EA6500 a four star Editors' Choice for wireless routers.

  • Cisco has clearly spent a lot of time and effort on the EA6500's interface, and listened to customer feedback. It's full of excellent features and is great for setting QoS rules. Performance is outstanding on 5GHz in combination with both 802.11n- and 802.11ac clients, but on 2.4GHz a few other routers are faster. The EA6500 is an excellent 802.11ac router, but it isn't the cheapest. You can save money by buying a fast 802.11n router instead.

  • Running Cisco Connect Cloud firmware, the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router EA4500 makes an excellent router for those who want a fast and advanced home network that's easily manageable from anywhere.

  • The EA4500 is the update to the Linksys E4200 v2, designed to work with new upcoming router software from Cisco. Performance-wise it's on par as the E4200 v2, but for a chunk more change.

  • The Cisco EA4500 remains as well styled and constructed as the Cisco E4200. In general wireless performance, our tests suggested that this router falls a little behind the performance of the E4200. The Cisco Connect Cloud service is a neat idea, poorly rolled-out by a company that seemed to expect undiscriminating users to click through worrying terms and conditions without reading them. The latest revision to these terms for using CCC is less offensive, but could be changed again any time without the user being expressly notified.

Cisco has kept all the RV042 v3's features and added the goodness of Gigabit ports. My tests show that the higher bandwidth connectivity provides a significant boost in routing throughput and a smaller goose to IPsec performance. The main negative for the G is the $50 premium (~35%) Cisco wants for the faster ports. Those little Gigabit switch chips sure must be expensive.

Performance wise, Cisco hasn't made any great strides forward with the EA3500. If anything, when compared with Cisco's original "N750" router, the E4200, performance is a bit lower in some cases. But as it seems with many routers today, performance is close enough that it will probably be hard to see a clear improvement in speed or range under real-world conditions. But the EA3500 and the other members of its family aren't really a performance play.

  • If you are looking for a Wi-Fi router that is friendly to setup and manage and still want powerful hardware, consider the EA3500.

Overall, I like the Cisco RV180. Clearly, it is a fast router. But it is also quite solid as a VPN router, with easy Site-to-Site VPN configurations, inclusion of the QuickVPN client and support for PPTP VPN tunnels. If I could ask for one thing, I would like to see menu responsiveness improved. In summary, I think a network can never be too fast, and the Cisco RV180 presents compelling performance at a reasonable price.

  • The Cisco RV180W Wireless-N Multifunction Router offers security-conscious small businesses an all-in-one box to set up VPN access for remote employees, basic routing, wireless, and firewall. It's also future-proof, supporting IPv6 by default.
