  • Samsung's best-performing TV ever, the PNF8500 series pushes the plasma picture quality envelope, especially in bright rooms.

  • While we can't claim that the F8500 is the new reference TV in picture quality, it looks to be one of the best 1080p televisions ever. Each screen size in this series is fairly expensive, and they should be: There is only quality here. The F8500 has royally surpassed one of the biggest drawbacks of plasma tech-their dimness when compared to LCDs-giving those with the funds to pursue it every reason to do so.

  • The Samsung PNF8500 series is a top-shelf plasma HDTV line that delivers outstanding color quality, solid 2D and 3D imagery, and very dark blacks. You'll shell out some big bucks for this model though, and you may want to pick up a universal remote while you're at it.

  • The Samsung F5500 plasma offers great features and very good picture quality, but its performance suffers significantly under the lights.

  • Rating Unavailable

The PN51F5500 is the smallest size in the mid tier plasma series from Samsung. Picture quality is strong here but it lacks a bit when compared to the top tier F8500 plasma. This is to be expected, but the feature set is still quite good. The F5500 uses Active 3D to create 3D images, Samsung's new Smart Hub is offered with all the apps and online content you would ever need. It loses the built in front-facing camera, but voice interaction is present a lot more useful than we initially thought it would be.

  • Panasonic's best plasma for 2012 gets a few extra features over the less-expensive GT50 series. There's an Infinite Black Ultra Panel with a new predischarge spark intended to help achieve even deeper black levels, and an improved louvre filter for keeping black areas of the picture darker under bright overhead lighting. Panasonic also reserves its 96Hz refresh rate, designed to better handle 1080p/24 sources, for the VT50 alone.

  • The 65-inch VT50 series plasma HDTV is Panasonic's best in show, top-of-the-line flagship for this year. It'll cost you just a little under four grand (at MSRP $3699), and it's served hot with all the toppings: full HD 3D, dual 8-train speakers with an integrated subwoofer, Panasonic's Viera Connect smart platform, 2500Hz Focused Field Drive motion, the new Touch Pad controller, and a gorgeous glass and metal design. Mama mia, that's a spicy meatball.

  • At around $3300 after discounts the TC-P65VT50 is an expensive little play toy. This superb picture quality TV has lots of competition even in this large size. It has a full, but not overloaded feature set. The Samsung PN64E8000 is a close competitor and Samsung and Sharp have some LED competition in this size and price range as well.

  • Superb picture quality and beautiful design place the Panasonic GT50 in the top tier of plasma TVs, but it's more expensive than others with similar performance.

  • The TC-P50GT50 has the Infinite Black Pro panel that is Panasonic's best for 2012, but without the Ultra filter on the VT50 series which is even better. This is a big step up from lower end plasmas from Panasonic due to the much better signal processing. Black levels are about 20% better than lesser models with the extra fine processing of the sub pixel controller which controls the sub pixels red, green, blue inside each individual pixel cell.

  • The PN60E6500 delivers on value. A 60" TV with a picture and features that perform excellent. Do not let the bright LED TVs on the showroom floor fool you. If you have a darker room environment, this TV delivers a great picture without some of the features (Smart Interaction) that add so much to the cost of the TV while still getting 3D and the full Smart TV suite and built in Web Browser and Wifi. It's a value set that many will miss due to not knowing how superb these picture qualities are.
