  • In summary the EOS 100D / Rebel SL1 is a surprising camera in many ways, not least that it delivers the typical EOS experience without too many compromises at all. It makes a compelling alternative to a compact system camera when paired with the smaller Canon lenses (including the EOS M), but we'd choose the more capable EOS 700D instead as a natural partner for Canon's larger optics.

  • Overall I'm going to give the EOS SL1 / 100D a Recommended rating. It misses out on our top award as I honestly think most people buying an entry-level DSLR would be better-served by a mirror-less camera these days. But for those who understand the differences and would genuinely prefer a traditional DSLR, the EOS SL1/ 100D represents a compelling option and a decent upgrade over the company's previous entry-level model, the EOS T3 / 1100D.

  • It's hard to know what to say about the Canon 100D. Canon has once again produced an incredibly capable DSLR, which produces excellent images.
The miniaturisation element is fun, and a nifty feat of engineering, but there's still no way that a camera and system such as this can compete with the likes of the Micro Four Thirds system in terms of weight and size.

  • A reasonable option for an entry-level dSLR, the Pentax K-50 should satisfy if you need the weather-sealed design. But while acceptable, it and its cheaper sibling the K-500 lag behind the competition in image quality and performance.

  • The Pentax K-500 boasts top-notch image quality, and a pentaprism viewfinder, which is unheard of at its entry-level price point.

  • We can't think of any other similarly priced DSLR that offers so many features, so if you can live with the lack of weatherproofing that the more expensive K-50 offers, the new Pentax K-500 makes the perfect first DSLR for stills shooters.

  • A solid if unexceptional entry-level dSLR, the Nikon D3200 should still please most folks looking for an upgrade from their point-and-shoots.

  • The Nikon D3200 is a very capable and compact digital SLR. Its Guide Mode is perfect for beginners, and the camera offers enough manual controls to satisfy more advanced photographers.

  • With its huge 24 megapixel sensor, the entry-level D3200 instantly becomes the highest-resolution APS-C DX format Nikon DSLR, and it offers more pixels than any competing manufacturer too. Compared to the 18-month-old D3100, Nikon has managed to simultaneously increase the pixel count by a massive 10 megapixels and yet still maintain similar quality at higher sensitivity settings, which is no mean feat.

  • With excellent photo quality, better continuous-shooting performance than a lot of the dSLRs in its price range and solid autofocus behavior during video capture, the Sony Alpha SLT-A35 has a lot to recommend it as a step up from a point-and-shoot. But it also lacks some of the design pizzazz--or simply basic attractiveness--of some competitors, and can be a little annoying to shoot.

  • A full complement of features, compact body, speedy overall performance, and Sony's Translucent Mirror Technology make the SLT-a35 a good option for entry level users who want a highly functional, lightweight camera that offers some of the benefits of a megazoom (EVF that's usable during video capture), but retains all the plusses of a DSLR.

  • Like the previous SLT models the A35 is an excellent all-round performer. It gets all the basic stuff right most of the time, and the refined ergonomics make it fun to work with, for both beginners and advanced photographers. With fast continuous shooting, sweep panorama, picture effects, HDR mode and multi-frame noise reduction the feature set is quite impressive (especially given the A35's price point), and the compact dimensions make it a good alternative for those who prefer to travel light.

  • A very good entry-level dSLR, the Nikon D3100 delivers excellent photo quality in a body that's streamlined for experienced photographers, but relatively unintimidating for the less advanced. Its only weakness is performance; though solid, it nevertheless lags behind the competition.

  • Nikon's D3100 is an excellent entry-level digital SLR, and is currently the only D-SLR to offer continuous autofocus during video recording for a true camcorder-like video-capture experience.

  • Rating Unavailable

Nikon's new entry level DSLR offers nice still image quality with good high ISO performance all rolled in to a compact and light DSLR. The 18-55mm kit lens is a solid if unspectacular performer with average AF times, but generally good image quality and a very usable close focus distance. Shutter lag seems minimal despite timings that place it toward the bottom of the pile amongst entry level DSLRs.
