  • The TomTom VIA 1605TM is a top-notch budget GPS device, thanks to its sharp 6-inch screen, solid feature set, and fair price.

  • TomTom's Start 20 still isn't the most keenly priced sat-nav on the market. But street prices for the UK-only model have already fallen below £100, with the European version £10-20 more expensive. Whilst you can get Mio's 5in Spirit 685 for the same as this, with RDS-TMC traffic already enabled, the latter lacks full UK postcode entry, which can be extremely useful. So the Start 20 isn't the absolute pinnacle of sat-nav value, but it does bring yet more of TomTom's premium features down to an even more affordable level.

As an entry level SatNav the TomTom Start 20 is a good device and a reasonable performer. Bearing in mind that it is an entry level device then the missing features are not critical to the targeted market. If you want a device that you can use out of the box and never take near a computer then this could be the SatNav you are looking for.

It has the strength and pedigree of the TomTom brand. This is evident in the easy to use navigation, the good routing, clear and easy to follow navigation instructions etc.

So should the TomTom Start 20 be on your shopping list? Absolutely. For £130 you get a dedicated sat nav that beats the pants off most of its standalone rivals and makes those freebie apps you can download for your phone look inadequate by comparison. If you're serious about getting around, but don't want to spend a fortune, then the TomTom Start 20 is very hard to beat.

  • Rating Unavailable

As with its TomTom LIVE predecessors, the GO 1000 is not a cheap sat-nav and despite its abilities, if you're only an occasional traveller it will be overkill. For those in this category, a more modest option would make better economic sense. But for those who make frequent journeys or just want the most advanced satellite navigation, the GO 1000 is the most capable device currently on the market. Yet again, TomTom has set the standard other satellite navigation devices will need to beat.

  • The TomTom GO Live 1000 is one of the best-equipped GPS navigation devices on the market, making it ideal for those who use a sat nav every day. Less frequent users will get better value out of cheaper units, but the GO 1000 is slick, functional and very well designed, making it a highly recommended purchase.

  • The TomTom GO 1000 is one of the best-equipped GPS navigation devices on the market, making it ideal for those who use a sat nav every day. The user experience is slick, functional and very well designed. However, less frequent users will get better value out of cheaper units, and the included MyTomTom software currently seems a step below the previous iterations.
