  • For consumers looking at a very low cost laptop for basic computing needs, the Toshiba Satellite C855 is surprisingly affordable at a good deal less than $400. It may not have as high of performance or as much storage as some of the competition, but it makes up for this by having some good battery life along with a USB 3.0 port for better high speed external storage expansion.

  • The Toshiba Satellite C855 is a solid-but-uninspiring laptop. Its design is inoffensive but unlikely to excite and build quality is a little patchy. What turns us off the most, though, is the mediocre keyboard. The C855 has enough power for most casual tasks, but it's not the best if you're going to be doing a lot of typing.

  • The recommended retail price of 799 Euros (~$1032) for the Toshiba Satellite L850-153 is not entirely fair. In our opinion, the cheap synthetic case makes a poor impression due to various workmanship errors (snappy Esc key, unclean edges, poorly screwed flaps and loose USB ports).

The extremely sensitive glossy finish is another issue. The notebook is covered with dust and fingerprints after an hour of use.

  • The Toshiba Satellite Pro L850 lacks the pace of some budget notebooks, and the screen and input device are trimmed to the budget price. Triumphs for the Satellite Pro include its large hard drive and usable speakers, while battery life proved quite usable too. For a business on a budget, it will handle the basics.

  • What you get in the Toshiba Satellite L850 is a 15.6in laptop that can be used for a little bit of everything. It has a good CPU and discrete graphics, and it ships with plenty of internal storage space. However, its keyboard can feel cramped thanks to a very small left palm rest area and we also think that its asking price is a little too high compared to the competition.

  • The Toshiba Satellite Pro can be recommended solely for the office. It offers more than enough performance capability for all common usage scenarios and provides a large, satisfying display. This recommendation is restricted to office use due to dissatisfaction with the keyboard. Prolific writers would be rather unhappy with the C870's keyboard and should look to the Samsung Series 3 305E7A-S03DE instead. Anyone who seldom or never writes long texts would be able to live with the keyboard.

  • Toshiba's Tecra R950-11F looks like a dull business laptop, but its plastic exterior is hard-wearing and it's got the fundamentals covered extremely well: a reasonable screen, great keyboard and mouse, and enough power inside to get the job done. Dell and Lenovo offer workstations that do more, but not for at £772 exc VAT.

  • The Tecra R950 is a hefty 15.6in. business-grade notebook with an up-to-date set of security and manageability features, integrated mobile broadband and a solid but understated design. It performs well enough for its market, although we'd prefer a higher screen resolution.

  • Toshiba's Tecra R950 is essentially a replacement for a desktop PC. As such, it cannot match models such as the new ultrabooks for lightweight portability, but it does offer greater comfort, good connectivity, plus better security and easier maintenance for corporate buyers.
