  • The Nikon Coolpix P900 boasts the longest zoom range of any camera on the market, but a lack of detail at higher ISOs holds it back.

  • Using zoom ratios seems to be the new way to sell cameras where once it was all about the megapixels. Here on the Nikon Coolpix P900 we have an 83x optical zoom, which is currently the market leader. However, to get to that kind of ratio, you need to have a huge camera and that won’t be to everybody’s tastes.

  • The P900 is the longest-zoom bridge camera in the world – for now, at least – but it's also big, heavy and expensive. Image quality at shorter focal lengths is good but falls away at high zooms settings.

  • The addition of the versatile vari-angle screen, a dedicated command dial, enhanced GPS tracking and NFC connectivity make the new Coolpix S9900 Nikon's best travel-zoom camera yet, although it doesn't make any great strides forwards in terms of image quality or general performance.

    - Not so good are the remote shooting features which remain very basic.
    - The COOLPIX S9900 also adds NFC for easier Wifi connections, allowing you to intitiate wireless transfers and remote control by gently tapping your smartphone against the camera body.

  • The Nikon S9900 offers a very long zoom range in a surprisingly compact body, but there's no overcoming the limitations of the small sensor, and the image quality isn't great – you can't shoot raw files, either.

  • At £340/$500, the Nikon Coolpix P610 is pretty pricey for a camera that doesn’t offer any better image quality than a well-sorted compact camera. However, you do get an awful lot of bang for your buck.
Although a 60x optical zoom range no longer makes the P610 top dog in this sector (the Canon SX60 HS has a 65x range, and Nikon’s new P900 boasts an outrageous 83x lens), it still gives pretty much all the focal length flexibility you could ever need.

The Nikon CoolPix P610 is a compact digicam with a huge 60x optical zoom lens that allows you to be ready for any situation. Excellent performance and good overall image quality makes this camera a must see for travel or anyone looking for an affordable camera for any situation.

  • A well performing camera that produces good quality images, especially in favourable conditions. If you're looking for a long zoom or holiday camera, Nikon has produced a good contender. But if you want raw shooting, look at the Canon SX60 instead.

  • The Nikon Coolpix S7000 is a simple camera but it offers quite a few useful features which make it appealing, and with a 20x optical zoom, perhaps particularly to those who want a camera to take with them on holiday.
Although it doesn’t offer full manual control, at least you can change a few key settings (such as sensitivity), and handily, the autofocus point.
It’s also quite a fun camera to use, with a nice range of digital effects, the ability to create panoramas and other nifty features such as the ability to create a video comprised of short clips with an added soundtrack.

  • A basic but well-specced camera that's worth considering if you're looking for a long zoom compact that will let you capture pleasing images on your next trip with the minimum of fuss.
Offering a neat little package for your money, the S7000 performs well and boasts some useful features that will appeal to those looking for a simple family or holiday camera.
The Nikon S7000 offers versatility and value for money.

  • The Nikon Coolpix L840 is a decent all-rounder that performs well and generates reasonable image quality, providing you don’t scrutinise too closely and spot the slightly disappointing detail levels. It’s fast to focus, exposes accurately and has a simple control layout that just as easy to learn and operate as a basic compact camera.
