  • The Olympus Tough TG-3 is a worthy successor to the TG-2. Despite some image noise, it's still the best rugged camera we've tested.

  • As long as you have some patience, then using the Olympus Tough TG-3 is a delight. We took it to many events from gigs to days out at the beach and it coped with all of them. The patience comes with the frustrations we discovered. For example, putting a memory card in will frequently knock the protective catch down the card making it write protected. You have to take it out to slide it back up again. That's not too much of an issue until you've done it a couple of times a week.

  • Pricey, but if you need a camera that's built and equipped for life well off the beaten track, the Olympus TG-3 is worth the money.

  • The Canon PowerShot D30 can go deep underwater, but feels pretty dated in terms of image quality and performance.

  • Canon have really pushed the boundaries on their tough cameras by increasing the integrity of the chassis. While the 2m drop is already matched in many tough cameras – and even bettered – the PowerShot D30 is unsurpassed in the depth that you can swim without an extra casing to protect the camera. It's certainly an easy camera to use as well, aside from the sneakier sub-menus that aren't immediately noticeable.

  • The D30 excels underwater and its new external design makes it one of the most ergonomic tough cameras on the market. However, the D30's direct rivals can go deeper. Image quality isn't bad compared to rival cameras, but a tendency to underexpose can make shots look initially uninspiring.

  • The compact Pentax WG-3 is rugged, waterproof, and packs a fast lens. Its design is striking, but its images show quite a bit of noise at higher ISO settings.

  • On the whole, the Pentax WG-3 just doesn't stand out in any notable way from any other waterproof cameras this year. It finished right in the middle of the pack in our 2013 Waterproof Showdown, and we don't think that it's the best option for any kind of photographer. The Pentax WG-3 isn't anything more than a run-of-the-mill point-and-shoot that you can put through some extracurricular abuse.

  • So if you don't mind the lack of built-in GPS and do like the bold styling, the Pentax Optio WG-3 is definitely a good choice for a camera that should withstand the "rigorous and demanding needs of the adventurous photo enthusiast".

  • The Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS combines a bright lens, a high-sensitivity, high-speed sensor, and some nice extras to make it a top rugged compact camera.

  • The Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS would be a very good camera even without a rugged design. Its go-anywhere design, GPS, fast f/2 lens, and impressive high ISO performance make it our Editors' Choice for rugged point-and-shoot cameras.

  • In many ways the Olympus TG-1 represents the culmination of experience the company has gained with previous generations of tough or ruggedised cameras. It's a solidly built camera that's tough enough to withstand the kind of use that would be the ruin of regular compacts and yet features enough clever design elements to handle well in difficult conditions. While it does lose some points on account of some niggly image quality issues, on the whole it's one of the best tough cameras on the market.

  • GPS and fast shooting performance make the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 a worthy rugged point-and-shoot even if its photos and videos aren't the sharpest.

  • Images from the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 are on the soft side, but its tough build and innovative feature set make this pocket camera our favorite rugged outdoor shooter.

The tough, new Panasonic DMC-TS3 (DMC-FT3 here at CP+ in Japan and other parts of the world) certainly brings the tough. It's , but that's old news. We put those to the test years ago with the first-generation models, and were impressed.
