AES or the Advanced Encryption Standard is a specification for encrypted information interchange established by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in 2001.

AES is one of the most powerful and fast encryption algorithms for electronic data and is considered secure enough to provide security for even US government classified information.

The best routers supporting AES are typically only required in industrial and government facilities with robust anti-espionage and security requirements.

  • Tiny and affordable, the TP-Link 150Mbps Wireless N Nano Router makes a great companion for mobile users needing to share their hotel room's Internet with wireless clients.

  • The TP-Link 150 Mbps Wireless N Nano Router is a very good traveling companion for those who need flexible and ubiquitous wireless connectivity but sloppy documentation is likely to frustrate those not experienced in configuring Wi-Fi.

  • While most of us won't see such drastic cuts in download speeds, it may be worth considering a more robust router for your permanent home connection, especially if you have a very fast broadband connection.
For those on more modest connections, and certainly for those who want to take a router with them as they travel, then the TP-Link 150Mbps Wireless N Nano Router is an excellent device.

  • Fiddly to configure and disappointing speeds at long distances, but at this price it's hard to be critical.

Overall, I like the Cisco RV180. Clearly, it is a fast router. But it is also quite solid as a VPN router, with easy Site-to-Site VPN configurations, inclusion of the QuickVPN client and support for PPTP VPN tunnels. If I could ask for one thing, I would like to see menu responsiveness improved. In summary, I think a network can never be too fast, and the Cisco RV180 presents compelling performance at a reasonable price.

  • The Cisco RV180W Wireless-N Multifunction Router offers security-conscious small businesses an all-in-one box to set up VPN access for remote employees, basic routing, wireless, and firewall. It's also future-proof, supporting IPv6 by default.

  • Draytek's Vigor 3200n has a price and list of features that places it squarely between simple consumer routers and expensive professional hardware. The multi-WAN management is its trump card, as nothing like it exists in the consumer market, and few mid-range devices can rival it either. Apart from this function, it's still a powerful router though, with excellent wireless performance if required and good VPN support.

  • On the whole the Buffalo AirStation N450 USB 2.0 Wireless Adapter is a great investment if you've got a wireless N router and you want to give your wireless network a boost.
