Often Wi-Fi networks are easy to hack into when the network name and encryption keys are known. The MAC address filter however, prevents unauthorized access by performing an additional check on a different parameter to ensure greater security. The MAC (Media Access Control) address uniquely identifies each network interface to the physical network segment.

Most routers come with the Mac Address Filter, which is generally disabled; but to guarantee the best security it is best to have a router with the Mac address filter enabled.

  • Home users, especially Apple fans who own 802.11ac-enabled devices, will love the new AirPort Extreme for its all-new elegant design, ease of use, and great performance; advanced users should look elsewhere for more features and customization.

  • To sum up, I'll let the Router Ranker detail tell the tale. The AExAC ended up with a #6 rank and total rank score of 5.0 This puts it below all of the current-generation AC1750 class routers, except for the very disappointing TRENDnet TEW-812DRU. It also ranks above Buffalo's first-generation WZR-D1800H, but that is the only AC1750 router that hasn't been retested with the new wireless test process.

  • With the new AirPort design and the inclusion of 802.11ac, it's plain to see that Apple is taking steps forward with its networking devices. Cupertino's latest AirPort Extreme is not on the bleeding edge, as far as speeds and feeds go, but it is beautiful and "just works" out of the box.

  • The ASUS DSL-N55U is a solid modem-router that offers dual-band Wi-Fi and excellent storage features. It has a well designed interface and it's a swift performer overall. We experienced a few frustrations with the installation of some of its apps, but it worked really well once everything was set up. We really enjoyed using it.

  • A good price and superb performance in all departments mean that Asus ADSL dual-band router clambers to the top of the pile.

  • Rating Unavailable

The DSL-N55U with a retail price in the range £80 to 90 is not the cheapest ADSL2+ modem/router by a long way, and lacks some of the bells and whistles of the more expensive models, but does pack a good performance for its price.

The price point means that you really should be sure of wanting to use the media server or the extensive QoS functionality of the router to make it worth buying. If Asus can add the Download Master functionality that its Ethernet routers support then the router would be even more desirable.

  • The Amped Wireless RTA15 is a decent Wi-Fi router, but better firmware is needed for it to live up to its high cost and our expectation.

  • Amped Wireless' High Power 700mW Dual Band AC Wi-Fi Router (RTA15) is an excellent at 802.11n but disappoints in 802.11ac mode.

  • The Trendnet TEW-812DRU is the most affordable 802.11ac-enabled router on the market, and it offers excellent performance.

  • Rating Unavailable

There are just too many negatives to recommend this router, in spite of its aggressive pricing. Unimpressive range, low file sharing throughput, problems with 2.4 GHz 40 MHz mode connections and even its inability to properly communicate its Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) status are all reasons to leave it on the shelf.

  • Killer throughput, a good feature set and easy setup makes the Trendnet AC1750 Dual Band Wireless Router (TEW-812DRU) an excellent 11ac router.

  • With the latest firmware, the Linksys EA6500 makes a decent contender among the handful of its peers.

  • The cloud as management console with Cisco Connect Cloud raises the bar for router management and that capability coupled with fine performance makes the EA6500 a four star Editors' Choice for wireless routers.

  • Cisco has clearly spent a lot of time and effort on the EA6500's interface, and listened to customer feedback. It's full of excellent features and is great for setting QoS rules. Performance is outstanding on 5GHz in combination with both 802.11n- and 802.11ac clients, but on 2.4GHz a few other routers are faster. The EA6500 is an excellent 802.11ac router, but it isn't the cheapest. You can save money by buying a fast 802.11n router instead.
