  • With the latest firmware, the Linksys EA6500 makes a decent contender among the handful of its peers.

  • The cloud as management console with Cisco Connect Cloud raises the bar for router management and that capability coupled with fine performance makes the EA6500 a four star Editors' Choice for wireless routers.

  • Cisco has clearly spent a lot of time and effort on the EA6500's interface, and listened to customer feedback. It's full of excellent features and is great for setting QoS rules. Performance is outstanding on 5GHz in combination with both 802.11n- and 802.11ac clients, but on 2.4GHz a few other routers are faster. The EA6500 is an excellent 802.11ac router, but it isn't the cheapest. You can save money by buying a fast 802.11n router instead.

  • The Asus RT-AC66U is an excellent router and is currently one of the best options among those that support the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard.

  • Rating Unavailable

The only viable argument for buying the RT-AC66U, or any other draft 11ac router, is to buy two and use one as a bridge to form a high-bandwidth 5 GHz link to a HD media player. But even there, I think using a three-stream N router and less-expensive bridge like the ASUS EA-N66 or TRENDnet TEW-640MB will get you to the same place and let you save your money for the inevitable move to an 11ac router, once the standard is released and the dust settles.

  • More technical and small business users including those wanting a true VPN server, robust IPv6, and granular control over the wireless signal will find the Asus RT-AC66U a delight.

  • The Netgear R6300 WiFi Router is for a high-standards, low-ego type of user: it's not something you can show off aesthetically, but a powerhouse for a robust, fast home network, both for now and tomorrow.

  • Although the Netgear R6300 supports the latest 802.11ac standard (in draft form); an odd design, and surprisingly underwhelming performance running in 11ac mode does not make this router one of Netgear's best.

  • The R6300 is a well-featured home wireless router with good performance in 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11n modes. In 802.11ac mode it was decent, although anyone expecting close to gigabit speed will still be disappointed. At around £200, it's more expensive than some of its rivals.

  • The Western Digital My Net N900 Central makes an excellent all-in-one wireless and network storage option for home and mobile users.

  • Western Digital's MyNet N900 is a delightful surprise from a vendor not known for making wireless routers with a nice, simple, easy-to-remember product name.

  • Overall the WD My Net 900C is a very accomplished router offering almost every feature that WD could cram into it, and providing decent 11n wireless performance. If you need an all-in-one router with storage now, the My Net 900 Central is a fast, solid, if slightly pricey option (£299 for the 1TB and £349 for the 2TB). However, do bear in mind that 802.11ac wireless routers are already hitting the market which are promising gigabit wireless speeds.

  • Rating Unavailable

Cisco has kept all the RV042 v3's features and added the goodness of Gigabit ports. My tests show that the higher bandwidth connectivity provides a significant boost in routing throughput and a smaller goose to IPsec performance. The main negative for the G is the $50 premium (~35%) Cisco wants for the faster ports. Those little Gigabit switch chips sure must be expensive.
