Better handling and importantly faster performance than its predecessor
The new Fujifilm X-E2 offers more features, better handling and importantly faster performance than its predecessor, which we already loved, making it our favourite X-series camera and one of the best compact system cameras around. Fujifilm have clearly listened to their users and produced a camera that may look very much like the original X-E1, but which improves on it in virtually all ways.
Impressive noise performance, Great build quality and handling
The Fujifilm X-E2 improves on the X-E1 and addresses a number of the issues we found with the original camera, including accidentally knocking the exposure compensation dial, this hasn't happened on this new model, as well as adding a larger higher resolution screen. Focus speeds and continuous shooting speed has also been improved with the camera feeling extremely responsive in use.
Delivers excellent image quality
Ultimately, we prefer the X-A1 to the X-M1, as it delivers the same handling, features and performance, and, crucially, very similar image quality at a lower price. This is turn mitigates some of the issues that we had with the X-M1, principally concerning the lack of a viewfinder, so much so that we'd recommend that you save your cash and choose the X-A1 rather than the X-Trans, X-M1 version.
Most affordable Fuji CSC, Natural, vibrant images, Tilting LCD
Most photographers will tell you that image quality is their biggest consideration when selecting a camera, but the build and functionality of the camera are also key factors along with the price. Many manufacturers reduce the functionality and build quality of their more entry-level cameras in order to keep cost down, but Fuji is in the unusual position of being able to achieve the same thing while keeping these two elements the same.
Impressive performance, Outstanding detail and ISO performance
The Fujifilm X-A1 delivers an excellent standard of image quality, is an attractively designed camera and has a strong level of performance. While the lenses in the X series might not be the cheapest on the market, the X-A1 is well worthy of consideration in the entry-level CSC market.
Very good value for money, Excellent noise performance
The 16-50mm OIS kit lens, despite being a kit lens, delivers excellent image quality with a useful wide-angle to telephoto zoom range and includes a good sized lens hood. The combination of this lens and the compact body makes for a compelling package, with the added bonus of a good 3inch tilting screen and built in Wi-Fi connectivity.
Entry-level looks lavish and feels flimsy
When we reviewed the X-M1, we concluded that it was a camera with an excellent sensor in a chintzy body. The X-A1 keeps the same cheap suit, drops in a marginally inferior sensor, and charges you $200 less. Is that a good thing? It depends on what you're shopping for.
Excellent - this camera should cost more
If you're considering an NEX or u43 kit, keep in mind that neither those nor the X-M1 are pocketable. You'll likely carry those cameras in a bag. If you want something truly pocketable, you're probably better off looking at an RX100. So if you'll be using a bag anyways, I would recommend the X-M1 over the NEX or any of the smaller u43 cameras.
Smaller, lighter and significantly cheaper
Ultimately, while we actually preferred the X-E1 to its big brother, the X-Pro1, the same can't be said about the X-M1, despite it being significantly cheaper and shipping with a good kit lens. The lack of a viewfinder is the main problem - for us, it just feels wrong to pick-up an X-series camera and not be able to hold it up to your eye.
Excellent high ISO noise performance
The Fujifilm X-M1 is an interesting development in the X-series and provides the opportunity for those who hanker after the style and performance of the X-E1, but at a more affordable price. With the concurrent launch of a quality kit lens, a telephoto zoom coming later in 2013, and the promise of more affordable XC lenses to come, it's clearly a product the company is committed to.
Solid build quality, despite composite construction
The X-M1 is Fujifilm's entry-level mirrorless camera with its unique X-Trans sensor. While it lacks the build quality and EVF of the more expensive X-E1, it adds a sharper, tilting LCD and Wi-Fi. The X-M1 is capable of taking incredibly sharp photos with very little noise. Performance is very good, although AF speeds are not as quick as the best-in-class mirrorless cameras.The camera is missing a few other handy features too, like an electronic level and remote control via Wi-Fi.
Tilting screen, Small size, Large APS-C sensor
When it comes to shopping for a camera like this, although image quality is good, appearance is still very important. If you're willing to part with a large chunk of change in return for something that looks beautiful but still delivers in the image quality department, then you'll no doubt be pleased with the Fuji X-M1.
If, however, you're looking for your first camera in the interchangeable lens category, and you're on a budget, this wouldn't be our first recommendation.
Low noise, Excellent colour, 3 inch tilting screen
The X-Pro1 and X-E1 with manual control dials, and built in viewfinders were a joy to use due to classic styling and quick photographic control. The Fujifilm X-M1 on the other hand no longer features as many external controls, and with the 16-50mm OIS lens aperture and shutter speed is controlled by the two control wheels. However, the additional of a 3inch tilting screen and built in Wi-Fi, along with a more compact body helps make up for this.
Great image quality is super-sharp
The X-M1 is new ground for Fujifilm: it's a camera targeted towards the masses, yet it maintains a decent level of its all-important pro-spec look and feel. Imperfections there may be, and it can feel a little more B-movie than Hollywood at times, but the X-M1 will score a cult-movie-like following for all its positives. A compact system camera that really shouldn't be overlooked, there's more to it than meets the eye.
Excellent not-quite-pocket-sized camera
the X20 is a super camera. It's not the game-changer the RX100 is (sensor size and variety of features in such a small package), but what you do get is a superior lens, no optical low pass filter - for crispy photographs, an actually usable viewfinder, 12fps, superb build quality, and delicious, delicious bokeh! If you're cross-shopping the RX100 and X20, it's certainly a tough decision. If fitting a camera in your purse or pocket is important, the RX100 wins hands down. For build quality?
Outstanding build quality
If your head has been turned by the headline-grabbing X100S, but you really, really want a zoom lens, then the X20 is on hand to more than satisfy your needs. £519 / $599 is admittedly a lot of ask for what is essentially still a compact camera at heart, despite all the fancy trappings, but for us the Fujifilm X20 delivers such a winning combination of old and new that offers so many important improvements over the original model that we can heartily recommend it for new and X10 users...
Fast hybrid AF with on-sensor phase detect points
The Fujifilm X20 is a major upgrade to the X10, with a brand new 12 Megapixel X-trans sensor and EXR II processor providing improved image quality and low light performance as well as new shooting modes, 1080p60 video and faster continuous shooting. The new sensor's phase-detect AF points provide the X20 with one of the fastest and most accurate AF systems around, at least for stills.
Excellent in-camera Raw conversion
The Fujifilm X20 is a true enthusiast's compact, with solid build quality, a fast lens, unique optical viewfinder, and sharp, high resolution photos. It offers a wide selection of manual controls, easily adjustable settings (thanks to twin control dials, the Fn button, and Quick Menu), and 1080/60p video recording. Downsides include a mediocre, hard-to-access movie mode and sub-par battery life.
Excellent image quality
The Fujifilm X20 delivers high image quality, unique handling and features, as well as an optical viewfinder, in a well built and stylish camera, with full manual controls, raw shooting and flash hot shoe. If these are features you're looking for, and have the money to invest, then the Fujifilm X20 comes highly recommended.
Low ISO images are sharp and class-leading
The Fujifilm X20 is not only the camera that irons out its predecessor's orb-related imaging issues, it's also the camera that pushes image quality up a notch to class-leading levels.
The chunky, retro-styled build doesn't make the X20 the tiniest of models and the design, even just aesthetically, won't suit all tastes - but we're big fans and think its looks are just as stand-out as its images.
Class-leading fast and reliable autofocus
The Fuji X20 is an excellent premium compact and the only one to have a mechanical zoom. Its lens is equivalent to 28-112mm which is suitable for a wide variety of subjects and has a rather bright maximum aperture. The X20 offers complete manual controls and an efficient interface, including dual control-dials and plenty of external controls.
1080p HD video @ 60fps
The lens is the same as the X10's and has the same push-on cover. We noticed an improvement in the functionality of the focusing ring, which is now more sensitive and allows you to adjust the speed at which focus is changed. Turn it quickly to re-focus rapidly, or slowly for greater precision.
A generational camera
The x100S has fine enough image quality and speed, in such a reasonably sized package, that the next generation of camera doesn't appeal to me. The x200S could have twice the resolution and twice the speed and I simply wouldn't care. I'm not suggesting that the x100S is the pinnacle of fixed lens digital cameras. But I am saying that Fuji has achieved such a balance of features and performance with the x100S that I can't reasonably see myself upgrading or switching for the foreseeable future.
Capable of excellent performance
While we could certainly dock the X100S for a lack of newbie-friendly features, this is still a $1,299.99 fixed-lens camera; there's probably not many beginners willing to shell out that kind of money for a camera lacking the flexibility of a system camera. Those in this part of the market probably know their way around a RAW converter or two, and are willing to suffer a bit for their art. Especially for street photographers who don't want to shell out for a Leica, the X100S is a fine choice.
Compelling mix of intuitive handling, impeccable image quality
There's no denying that £1099 / $1299 is a lot of money to pay for a compact camera with a fixed lens, but the Fujifilm X100S offers so many improvements that if you ever found yourself looking longingly at its predecessor, there's very little reason not to take a much, much closer look at this new version. Quite simply the new Fujifilm X100S is one of the best cameras that we've ever reviewed and joins its illustrious predecessor as a worthy winner of our coveted Essential! award.
Fast Hybrid AF with manual focus aids, Hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder.
The Fujifilm X100S builds on the success of its predecessor, the X100, with a new sensor, faster, more accurate focusing and a raft of other improvements. Fujifilm has concentrated on improving what needed it and fixing (most of) what was broken, while leaving what what best and most loved well alone - namely the X100's retro styling, composition and traditional controls.
Detail-rich images, Bright lens
By taking some of the best elements of the Fuji X-Pro1, such as the sensor design and Quick Menu, Fuji has produced a worthy update to the X100, and many owners of this camera will feel sorely tempted by the X100S. The improved handling and image quality makes it a very desirable step up.
Excellent resolution and detail in photos
The Fujifilm X100s improves quite dramatically over the Fujifilm X100, with a new 16 megapixel sensor that delivers excellent noise performance and detail in photos. The X100s gives the same familiar controls as the original X100 as well as a higher resolution electronic viewfinder, that when combined with the hybrid optical viewfinder, makes this camera a unique proposition.
Intuitive handling and speedy performance
The new XQ1 is clearly designed to take on the all-conquering Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 (our Compact Camera of the Year in 2012) and the popular Canon PowerShot S-series. It essentially offers image quality somewhere between the two at a very attractive price that is lower than both, whilst offering the same appealing retro design and great build quality that epitomises the X-series camera range.
Outstanding sharpness scores
The Fujifilm X-E1 is all of the fun and none of the frivolity of the X-Pro1. The decision to exchange the hybrid OVF for lower costs will make a lot of consumers happy, but keeping performance at basically the same level is the real achievement here. We loved having this camera in-house and hate to see it go. Anyone whoâ?? s been watching this series but put off by the price should take a second look.
Intuitive handling, fantastic image quality
Retailing for £749 in the UK and $1000 in the US for the body-only, or £1149 / $1399 with the new 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS lens, means that you can buy the X-E1 with a great kit lens for less than the body-only launch price of the X-Pro1 (although obviously this is now significantly less). It also pits the X-E1 directly against the Olympus OM-D E-M5 and the Sony NEX-7, both of which are great cameras, but both of which are quite different in their approach.
Excellent image quality, Superb high ISO noise performance
The X-E1 is a great follow up model to Fujifilm's X-Pro 1 providing most of what the more expensive flagship model offers at a significantly lower price point. For purists, an optical viewfinder on a rangefinder style camera will be a must-have feature and the X-Pro 1's hybrid viewfinder is a technological wonder. But if you can live without an optical viewfinder, the X-E1's EVF is one of the best around and is arguably better suited to an interchangeable lens camera.
Unique camera design makes you want to take pictures
Overall, we really enjoyed shooting with the Fujifilm X-E1, and I'm very pleased with the images I got out of it. The camera crashed on occasion (it wouldn't be a new X-series camera if it didn't have some bugs...), leaving buttons unresponsive, and focus and exposure sometimes delivered odd results, but powering off usually cleared the error.
Stunning image quality
While it might be tempting to think of the X-E1 as a stripped back X-Pro1, that does it something of a disservice in that the X-E1 is a great camera in its own right. Gifted with the same premium grade construction and finish, the X-E1 feels more refined and balanced than it's more expensive sibling.
Impressive colour reproduction
The Fujifilm X-Pro1 and X-E1 are the definition of retro digital cameras, and the moment you pick it up, you'll be reminded of an old film camera from the past. With manual controls on the lens and body it is very easy to adjust settings and the menus and controls are well thought out and easy to get to grips with. The electronic viewfinder is excellent with an extremely high resolution and is great to use, although it's a shame the 2.8inch screen isn't larger and a higher resolution.
Image quality is excellent, build quality is superb
It's not cheap and the autofocus speed isn't going to see off its nearest competitors, but the X-E1 is a tool that never takes its eye off the image-quality ball, all wrapped up into a super chic retro-styled body. It looks great, its images look even greater, and that's where this retro snapper wins. However the limited selection of current XF lenses may be seen as an issue and this pro-targeted model isn't going to suit all tastes or needs on account of its AF system.
Extremely low image noise up to ISO 6400
The Fuji X-E1 follows the X-Pro1 with the same 16 MP CMOS sensor that delivers class-leading image quality thanks to its unique X-Trans sensor which does not use an anti-alias filter.
The X-E1 is an excellent successor to the X-Pro1. While it does not address all issues, it improves upon the X-Pro1 considerably with a better EVF in a smaller body, faster performance and even a considerably lower price tag.
Retro styling, Less daunting than the X-Pro1
The 16.3 effective megapixel, 1920x1080 pixels Full HD video shooting Fujifilm X-E1 competes directly with the Olympus OM-D E-M5 in the retro styled compact camera system stakes. While, if you prefer the more modernist look, the Sony NEX-7 and cheaper Sony NEX-6 likewise offer an eye-level viewfinder, as well as the larger format APS-C sensor for almost DSLR-style picture quality.
Full manual controls & Raw capture
The XF1 enters a competitive field in the form of the enthusiast compact market, where it primarily distinguishes itself from its peers through its smart, retro design. The camera's leather and matte aluminium finish, along with the manual zoom operation make the XF1 a pleasing camera to hold and use. Retract the lens fully and the camera can also be easily pocketed. Despite these obvious pluses, the XG1 is not without its faults.
Image quality is good, Takes excellent panorama pictures
If you're in the market for a serious compact camera, the Fujifilm XF1 is an appealing option, particularly as it is available for less than £400. It has a wide range of features, highlights being the f/1.8 maximum aperture lens, panorama modes, advanced filters which all lead to the camera taking impressive, unique pictures. For a serious compact camera, we'd like to see a higher resolution screen and some users may like a hotshoe socket so they can add a flash unit.
Good low-mid ISO image quality
We have handfuls of love for the XF1 thanks to its decent image quality, collapsible manual zoom lens, competitive price and retro, pocketable design. But that's met with a few pinches of disappointment too: the maximum f/4.9 aperture at the full extent of the zoom, lack of optional viewfinder, ongoing "white orb" issues due to the sensor and that not-so-nice faux-leather finish.
Very low image noise, Stellar dynamic-range
The Fuji XF1 is the only pocketable digital camera with a mechanical zoom. This premium compact features direct manual-controls including dual control-dials and a highly customizable interface.
This model uses a 12 MP BSI-CMOS sensor with Fuji EXR technology which gives it a class-leading dynamic range. It is paired with a ultra-bright F/1.8 - 4.9 ultra-wide-angle 4X optical zoom lens.
The Fuji XF1 delivers good image quality for mid-size prints up to ISO 1600.
LCD is sharp and you can control many aspects of the display
If you like the look of this camera, and you want a unique model that you can show off to friends and family, the XF1's photographic quality is more than good enough to justify this camera's high price tag. However, if you aren't thrilled with this camera's retro look and if you prefer a plain-old power button on your cameras, the XF1 probably isn't worth your time.
Wide aperture, Raw shooting option, Stills image quality
The XF1 is a camera that both looks great and takes impressive photos. The unusual power control on the manual zoom wheel, however, is a little fiddly and won't suit everyone. Get beyond this, though, and the wide maximum aperture and raw image recording make for a very exciting, truly pocket-sized compact.

Introduced at Photokina 2012 as the entry-level model in Fujifilm's X-series of cameras, the FinePix XF1 shares a lot of features with the FinePix X10 but is sleeker, slimmer and lighter. The camera's aluminium body has a synthetic leather cladding that comes in black, tan or red and the retro design is in line with other cameras in the series. Coordinating retro-style cases are available.
Really intuitive to use
There's a lot to like about the XF1: it's got plenty of retro style, it's easy to use, it's packed with useful shooting features and it takes a great picture. Yes, switching it on and off can be a bit fiddly, but the double payback for this is a super-sharp manually operated zoom that's a real pleasure to use, along with a camera that's small enough to happily sit inside a coat pocket when switched off.
Very good still images, Exceptional high ISO performance
The X-Pro1 is a camera that's hard not to like - the retro rangefinder look is cool, controls are nicely placed and materials, build quality and overall fit and finish are quite nice. Auto focus and shutter lag performance are good, as is image quality - combine this with ISO performance that, frankly, sets a new standard for APS-C sensor cameras to my eye and it's clear Fuji has done a lot of things right with their latest mirrorless, interchangeable lens offering.

Excellent image quality at all ISO settings - impressive resolution and low noise
The X-Pro1 is a logical evolution from the fixed-lens FinePix X100, and it shares many of that camera's best attributes. The traditional dial-based control layout makes it a very engaging camera to use, and the clever hybrid optical-electronic viewfinder gives an immersive view of the world while providing as much or little exposure information as you like.
Smooth quality defocused areas
If you are an experienced photographer who's not concerned about having scene modes and ultra-fast autofocusing, there's lots to like about the Fuji X-Pro1. Setting the exposure via an aperture ring and a shutter speed dial seems to come naturally, and the combination of excellent noise control and fast lenses mean that you can shoot with the sensitivity set to automatic without any serious concerns.
Excellent high resolution screen, Stunning image quality
The Fujifilm X-Pro1 is a fantastic camera, in every area it produces the results expected from a premium quality camera. The image quality is stunning, with excellent, and I really mean excellent pixel level detail, with excellent colour reproduction, great dynamic range, excellent high ISO noise results and excellent JPEG output straight from the camera. The lenses are excellent with great handling from the all-metal construction and the bright apertures help render beautiful bokeh.
Class-leading image quality
The Fuji X-Pro1 is a 16 MP digital camera with delivers class-leading image quality thanks to its unique X-Trans sensor which does not use an anti-alias filter. Paired with one of the three excellent XF-mount lenses, the X-Pro1 produces some extremely sharp large prints up to ISO 6400 and even remains usable for mid-size prints until its maximum ISO of 25600.
Excellent image quality, pleasing color rendition
Overall, we felt that the FinePix X-Pro1 shows great promise. We were impressed by its retro good looks, superior performance at high ISO settings and the pleasing colors produced by the new X-trans sensor. However, its sluggish autofocus performance and lower-than-average battery life--issues we hope can be fixed or improved on in a firmware update--prevented us from awarding it our coveted Editor's Choice Award.
Rock-solid build quality
With its rangefinder-like dials and knobs up top, plus DSLR-style controls at the back, the 16.3 megapixel Fuji X-Pro1 is every inch the enthusiast's camera. It encourages experimentation rather than just pointing and shooting, plus, with its buttons and dials, a period of familiarisation will be required even by those used to shooting with either premium fixed lens compacts or digital SLRs.
Excellent build quality
Superzooms are treated like overpowered point-and-shoots, the happy medium between pocket cameras and DSLRs in terms of price and target audience. But they don't make everybody happy. There are photo enthusiasts (not many, to be honest) who own a nice DSLR but would fork over the cash for a high-quality, all-in-one camera if they had the choice, rather than compromising for a glorified point-and-shoot with a big lens. Fujifilm thinks these folks are mostly nature photographers.
Intuitive user interface and excellent image quality
With the new X-S1, Fujifilm have produced the ultimate super-zoom bridge compact camera, with a long list of desirable features, intuitive user interface and excellent image quality. The only real drawback is the price-tag, which puts the X-S1 up against mid-range DSLRs and high-end compact system cameras as well as its main superzoom rivals.
Rock solid, rugged build
The Fuji X-S1 is an ideal purchase for the photography nut looking for one camera that can do it all, and prepared to compromise on having image quality not quite on a par with a semi-pro DSLR that one could buy for a similar outlay. As with any superzoom, it really is about whether you need that whopper of a lens on the front. If you do, then the Fuji X-S1 is presently about the best big zoom bridge camera that's out there.
Larger than average 2/3inch sensor
The Fuji X-S1 is intended as a premium grade superzoom bridge camera. Using the same 2/3inch sensor as the Fujifilm X10, the X-S1 is capable of producing class-leading image quality within the superzoom segment. Other highlights include the manually operated 26x optical zoom, a surprisingly usable EVF, and solid overall build quality. Overall, superzoom fans will find little to complain about here, aside from the rather high price tag.
Great build quality
At around £600, the X-S1 is going to be quite an investment for the average person, so is it worth the money? Its features make it an extremely ideal option for someone wanting more than they get from a compact camera, but aren't interested in carrying around a number of lenses. With its zoom range of 24 - 624mm (35mm equiv.) and manual controls, it is very much like having a DSLR camera with the kind of lens range that would normally involve carrying a bag full of heavy lenses.
Great electronic viewfinder
The X-S1's £700 price tag is a big ask, but the camera does come with big features. It's got a great viewfinder, is wonderful to use, produces best in class images* and has an excellent, stabilised lens. But it's not perfection: despite significant improvements compared to a standard superzoom, the autofocus system won't near that of a DSLR.
Stellar dynamic range
The Fuji X-S1 delivers an excellent performance. Without being perfect, this camera is a fantastic all-in-one powerhouse. Its 12 megapixels EXR BSI-CMOS sensor and superb mechanical lens with an extremely versatile ultra-wide to super-telephoto optical zoom, plus a full set of manual controls make it more capable and versatile than any current fixed-lens camera.
Impressive zoom range
With its impressive zoom range, fast F2.8 aperture at the wide end, manual controls and custom settings, the FinePix X-S1 may appeal to advanced users who are looking for a camera that shares the shooting versatility and control of a dSLR in a slightly smaller package.
Fine detail in shots
The Fujifilm X-S1 put in a first-class performance throughout our tests, in all shooting conditions. It's a great camera and a realistic, versatile alternative to a dSLR. Well thought-out controls and great build quality mean we can highly recommend it for ambitious or semi-pro photographers.
