Faster auto-focus and burst shooting speeds
The price of the S120 is an eye-watering £449.00 / $449.99, up £20 in the UK, which puts it on a price-par with the class-leading Sony Cyber-shot RX100, itself bested by the RX100 Mark II, albeit at an even higher price-point. Despite the improvements, we still feel that the RX100 with its much larger sensor delivers even better results than the S120, making it our choice in the "pocketable compact camera for enthusiasts" sector of the market.
One of smallest cameras with RAW & manual control
As it stands though the S120 can still be squeezed into most pockets which keeps it unique against most of its competition - indeed only the Lumix LF1 challenges it in this regard. And if it is a genuinely pocketable enthusiast-class compact you're after then you should be comparing the S120 very closely against the LF1 and also seeing what that extra 1cm of thickness gets you from the RX100 II.
Easy to take impressive star trail shots, Has built-in Wi-Fi
The Canon PowerShot S120 is a steady upgrade of last year's S110, with a slightly faster aperture, faster continuous shooting and a higher resolution screen. This might not be enough to tempt S110 owners to upgrade, but the star trail feature does offer something unique and the results we achieved during testing are quite impressive.
Small camera, plenty of control
With its handling improvements, brighter lens, 1080/60p video, and unquestionable pocketability, the S120 is a terrific camera either for DSLR owners looking for something svelte to slip into a pocket, or shutterbugs with no desire to lug a DSLR while on vacation.
Delivers excellent image quality
Ultimately, we prefer the X-A1 to the X-M1, as it delivers the same handling, features and performance, and, crucially, very similar image quality at a lower price. This is turn mitigates some of the issues that we had with the X-M1, principally concerning the lack of a viewfinder, so much so that we'd recommend that you save your cash and choose the X-A1 rather than the X-Trans, X-M1 version.
Most affordable Fuji CSC, Natural, vibrant images, Tilting LCD
Most photographers will tell you that image quality is their biggest consideration when selecting a camera, but the build and functionality of the camera are also key factors along with the price. Many manufacturers reduce the functionality and build quality of their more entry-level cameras in order to keep cost down, but Fuji is in the unusual position of being able to achieve the same thing while keeping these two elements the same.
Impressive performance, Outstanding detail and ISO performance
The Fujifilm X-A1 delivers an excellent standard of image quality, is an attractively designed camera and has a strong level of performance. While the lenses in the X series might not be the cheapest on the market, the X-A1 is well worthy of consideration in the entry-level CSC market.
Very good value for money, Excellent noise performance
The 16-50mm OIS kit lens, despite being a kit lens, delivers excellent image quality with a useful wide-angle to telephoto zoom range and includes a good sized lens hood. The combination of this lens and the compact body makes for a compelling package, with the added bonus of a good 3inch tilting screen and built in Wi-Fi connectivity.
Entry-level looks lavish and feels flimsy
When we reviewed the X-M1, we concluded that it was a camera with an excellent sensor in a chintzy body. The X-A1 keeps the same cheap suit, drops in a marginally inferior sensor, and charges you $200 less. Is that a good thing? It depends on what you're shopping for.
Very good still image quality, Eye-Fi wireless compatibility
I'm not sure K-30 owners will be rushing out to trade into a K-50 in order to acquire an Eye-Fi capability missing from their current platform, but folks looking for a new or first-time DSLR can rest assured the K-50 is a worthy successor to the K-30, and that's a ringing endorsement indeed.
Excellent image quality, Dustproof and weather resistant
The Pentax K-50 is a very strong offering from Pentax, with a few unique bonuses such as weather resistance and even the range of colours. The idea of personalising a camera is something relatively new in the UK, but why not? It adds a certain something and takes nothing away. A rugged and reliable all weather DSLR that is well worth a look.
Internal shake resistance, Can run on AA batteries
The Pentax K-50 makes for a good starter option, and we were impressed with the lightning quick speed of its operation at this price point - with auto focus being particularly impressive. However, we did feel that overall the translucent APS-C sensor equipped Sony A58, or indeed Pentax's otherwise very similar K-500 DSLR, offer a slightly better value deal for an entry-level camera.
Great Little Camera
The Panasonic ZS30 is compact enough to carry easily, has an incredably long, compact Leica lens, more than enough low light capability for most people - unless you are a pixel peeping nerd or a pro who has to make a living off of his/her talent as a photographer, and it has more neat features that most people will ever use. Is it a DSLR? NO. Is it a darned good compact camera? Yes. Is it an excellent, full-featured, long lens travel camera? Absolutely, yes!
Touchscreen interface, built-in wi-fi connectivity and GPS
While last years' Lumix DMC-TZ30 / ZS25 model was more of a modest upgrade rather than a radical departure from what had gone before, 2013's DMC-TZ40 / ZS30 feels like a much more significant step forward for Panasonic's wildly popular travel-zoom range. The TZ40 is veritably stuffed to the gills with cutting-edge features, while the combination of a 20x zoom, effective stabilisation system and good image quality is hard to resist.
1080p video with zooming, stereo sound and continuous AF
Impressive, but so far so similar to much of the competition. Where the TZ40 / ZS30 really differs from its rivals though is the implementations of various technologies. Amazingly it remains the only pocket super-zoom of its peer group to employ a touchscreen which genuinely enhances control and selective focusing. Of the models with GPS, the TZ40 / ZS30 is the only one with a built-in landmark database and mapping facilities.
Impressive zoom for such a compact body
The Panasonic Lumix TZ40 arrives at the same retail price as the TZ30 at launch. When you consider the added functionality - namely the connectivity features - as well as the all-round improvements to the specification, you have to say that then TZ40 is an attractive proposition.
On the whole the additions to the feature-set are successful and welcome, while the more general improvements are also positive.
Good picture quality, Built-in Wi-Fi and GPS
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ40 has all the features needed to justify its travel zoom tag. It offers ample optical zoom, great for landscapes and distance objects, as well as built-in Wi-Fi and GPS, all in a pocketable body. It's a little on the expensive side, so some of the cheaper options may be more appealing, but the features and image quality certainly make it worth the money.
Solid build, 18 megapixel stills
Looking for one simple-to-use pocket camera with a creatively versatile zoom reach that will pretty much do it all? In offering a higher pixel count than its predecessor and newly adding Wi-Fi connectivity, the 18 megapixel, 20x optical zoom TZ40 is one of the more accomplished jack of all trades.
While in some ways its additions feel like a way of playing catch up with the rest of the 'travel zoom' market, the result is a snapshot camera that ends up a cut above.
Excellent compact system camera
All in all the Panasonic Lumix GF6 is a surprisingly capable camera that will more than satisfy a lot of people's needs, including both casual snappers and more serious photographers alike. You'd be hard-pushed to find such a well-rounded, well-connected, and, well, great performing camera without spending quite a lot more, making the new Panasonic Lumix GF6 richly deserving of our coveted Highly Recommended award.
Excellent low-light AF performance, Stop motion intervalometer
Given the current obsession with retro styling and rangefinder chic, it would be easy to pass over a camera like the Panasonic Lumix GF6 in favour of something superficially more classy. But while it may not look as sexy and desirable as models like the Olympus E-P5 and the Fujifilm X-M1, the Lumix GF6 has a huge amount to offer photographers of every ilk.
Excellent screen, Digital filters, Built in Wi-Fi
The Panasonic GF6 is one of the best compact system cameras currently on the market, especially for the beginner user.
Although it is the next in line after the Panasonic GF5, it's perhaps elevated slightly above that, being a little more comparable to the Panasonic GX1, with which it shares its sensor.
Image quality is fantastic, while usability, thanks in part to the touchscreen and sensible menu system, makes it one of the more pleasurable cameras to shoot with.
Wi-Fi built in - remote operation, Great image quality
The Panasonic Lumix GF6 offers almost everything you could want from a mirrorless camera, with the most likely complaint about it likely to be the lack of flash hot-shoe, making it less appealing to the more serious photographer. For the majority of people having a built in flash will be preferable, and the re-introduction of the mode dial will make the camera easier to use for every level of photographer.
Affordable, Tilitng hi-res screen, Improved resolution
When we reviewed the GF5, one mild criticism we had was that Panasonic had hardly tinkered with it in comparison to the GF3. It seemed very much 'more of the same'.
The step on between the 12 megapixel GF5 and 16 megapixel GF6 is thankfully a little more pronounced, and, resolution aside, we now get the expanded ISO range, compositional convenience of a tilting LCD, plus wireless connectivity options to bring the latest model bang up to date.
Remote shooting of both photos and video clips
Panasonic's Lumix DMC-GF6 represents the latest iteration of the company's entry-level compact systems cameras. Similar in size and body styling to the GF5, the GF6 has a lot more to offer to enthusiasts. Its resolution has been increased to 16 megapixels and it features the latest Venus Engine image processor, along with integrated Wi-Fi plus near field communication.
This is a great camera
The sensor is very good. Maybe two thirds to a full stop better than the a57 at ISO 3200. The EVF is now OLED so it's clearer, brighter and more detailed than the LCD finder in the a57 it replaces. In my week of use I've found the finder to be really good and the performance of the sensor to be equally good. I am not a beginner and also own Sony's full frame a99 and their previous full frame camera, the a850. I've owned the a77 camera as well.
Excellent OLED electronic viewfinder
The new Sony A58 offers most of its predecessor's design, features and performance at an aggressive price-point, which can only be good news for us consumers. Look under the hood and you do find a few corners have been cut to keep the cost down, but all things considered, this is simply a very good interchangeable lens camera at a very attractive price.
Picture Effects, Low light performance
Overall, Sony has produced a very good camera in the Alpha a58, and we're sure that anybody who buys one will be very pleased with its performance. At its current retail price of £449 / US$599.99 / AU$799 with the 18-55mm kit lens, it also offers excellent value for money, especially compared with its closest rivals.
Comfortable handgrip and handling
The entry-level DSLR market is one of the most competitive in photography and, as a result, anything that a camera can do to stand out is more than welcome. Sony had achieved this with past SLT range cameras, but the Sony A58 is a step back. The full resolution continuous shooting rate of 5fps isn't even best in class - other similar DSLRs shoot faster and maintain that speed for longer.
Good image quality
The screen on the A57 was a very nice 3inch screen with 921k dots, and it's a shame to see a smaller, lower resolution screen on the A58. However, with a low introduction price of roughly £440 with 18-55mm kit lens, the A58 feels more like a replacement for the A37 rather than a replacement for the A57, with those looking for a more advanced camera better off looking at the Sony Alpha A65.
Good levels of detail, Comfortable handgrip
The Sony A58 seems to be a muddied compromise between the two cameras it replaces, but it just doesn't do enough to excel in any one area, and with such stiff competition in the shape of the Canon EOS 650D, Nikon D3200 and Pentax K-30, it's hard to recommend the A58 above them.
Strong stills, weak video
If you've held off buying into a particular compact system camera, there's never been a better time to finally take the plunge. With the NEX-3N, Sony's put together a winning package, hitting the sweet spot in price and features. Although this camera isn't perfect (as we found with its video features), many first-time camera buyers will probably love it anyway.
User interface is perfect for consumers stepping up from P&S digital cameras
The NEX-3N is capable (with very little effort on the part of the user) of consistently and dependably delivering high quality images and excellent HD video. The NEX-3N successfully combines the P&S simplicity and ease of use of a compact digital camera with the larger sensor and lens interchangeability of a DSLR. To put that another way --the Sony NEX-3N makes the switch from P&S digital cameras to interchangeable-lens cameras as simple and painless as possible.
Image quality is excellent
The Sony NEX-3N is one of the cheapest compact system cameras on the market, but remarkably it's also one of the more accomplished, providing an intuitive upgrade path for compact camera owners, or simply being a small and light camera that delivers great results. There aren't too many bargains in the camera market, but the new Sony NEX-3N definitely qualifies as one of them.
Tilting screen, Small size
The Sony NEX-3N is not a camera for advanced photographers looking for something to replace or sit alongside their DSLRs. Luckily, Sony already has cameras that meet that brief in its lineup.
Instead, what we have here is something that anybody can pick up and be assured of great image quality.
Image quality, Noise performance, Compact size, Quick performance
The Sony NEX-3N is an excellent entry level mirrorless camera, delivering excellent image quality, without compromising on handling or design. The camera has a good tilting 3inch screen with a decent resolution, and built in flash, as well as a number of options that would suit the beginner or those looking to add more creativity to shots.
APS-C sensor for the price of a point and shoot
In closing, let us make it very clear that the Alpha NEX-3N IS the best camera you can buy for under Rs. 30,000. If you were considering getting an advanced point and shoot, forget it. Get the Alpha NEX-3N instead for its bigger sensor, incredibly compact size and the versatility of being able to swap lenses.
this camera is awesome. I have three situations where I took a picture and was stunned by the results. 1. A pigeon flew quickly over my head in a blue sky. The camera was on auto. I whipped around, got the bird in the frame, zoomed in a bit, and held the button half-way down to focus. The auto focus caught the bird quickly, and then the bird was instantly tracked by the auto focus. I took the picture, and the bird had no movement or blur in the photo.
Excellent image quality, Exemplary handgrip
The HX300, with its monster Carl Zeiss zoom, can easily handle landscape/scenic photography, wildlife photography, event photography (festivals, concerts, parties, family gatherings), and travel photography. A DSLR shooter would need a camera bag full of very expensive lenses to cover the same range as that amazing 50x zoom.
Sharp results shooting handheld even at the far reaches of the zoom
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX300 ultimately suffers in comparison to the Canon PowerShot SX50 HS, Fujifilm FinePix HS50 EXR and Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 by not offering enough prosumer features, especially when you factor in its high price-tag. In a crowded marketplace with less well-specified models available at cheaper prices and better-specified alternatives for the same kind of money, it's difficult to more whole-heartedly recommend the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX300, even thought that 50x zoom...
Sharp results handheld at maximum optical reach, Manual zoom
The Sony Cyber-Shot HX300 looks great, is nicely designed, feels robust and built to last when grasped in the hands, and we enjoyed the fact that we could operate the zoom manually and also achieve sharp results when shooting handheld towards the telephoto end of the zoom.
Good image quality, Optical SteadyShot
The Sony Cybershot DSC-HX300 is the most expensive 50x optical zoom camera on the market, you can save around £100 by purchasing the Fujifilm FinePix SL1000, so is the extra price justifiable? They share many of the same features, but the body has a little more quality to it and so have the pictures. Sony have managed to pack the 50x zoom lens into a much smaller body.
Videos look crisp and punchy
Priced at an MRP of Rs 25,990, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX300 is the most affordable super-zoom digital camera with 50x optical zoom. But that doesn't mean it's best value for money. You don't get hot-shoe for external flash, RAW support, fully articulating LCD monitor, eye sensor for EVF and GPS. Also, the image quality isn't extraordinary. If you're meticulous about image quality and want the best-in-class superzoom, there's nothing better than the Canon PowerShot SX50 HS.
Intuitive handling and speedy performance
The new XQ1 is clearly designed to take on the all-conquering Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 (our Compact Camera of the Year in 2012) and the popular Canon PowerShot S-series. It essentially offers image quality somewhere between the two at a very attractive price that is lower than both, whilst offering the same appealing retro design and great build quality that epitomises the X-series camera range.
Excellent color, noise control, and dynamic range
On the whole, we're thrilled with the G15's performance. It's a bold return to (most of) what made the G-series so great in the first place. In the future, we hope Canon will take a long hard look at the larger sensors found in some competing models and give some thought to merging the two tiers they've created with the G15 and G1 X, but for the time being, the company has set itself firmly on a path toward re-conquering the market.
Great image quality, Professional level mode dial with lots of physical buttons
As the newest member of Canon's G Series cameras, the Canon G15 does not disappoint. It is an all around excellent point and shoot for anyone ranging from amateurs to seasoned professionals. The 12.1-megapixel sensor paired with the Digic 5 image processor makes for a great combination. It is able to be used in a wide variety of settings due to the vast ISO range, the great 28-140mm focal length and the fast f1.8-f2.8 lens.
Well-designed camera with solid build quality
Though I'm still a little bitter about the removal of the rotating LCD, I have to say that Canon's PowerShot G15 is a great enthusiast camera. It takes very good photos, has plenty of features for both beginners and enthusiasts, offers good (but not class-leading) responsiveness, and has a huge selection of accessories.
Smart Auto shooting mode is accurate and easy in all situations
Canon's PowerShot G15 is a fantastic upgrade to the G12 and is perfect for anyone that doesn't want to fork over the additional $300 for the G1X. Fantastic image quality and performance compliment the fantastic set of features in this very easy to use compact camera. With a MSRP of US $499.99, it's not for everyone, but if you are interested in some of the best image quality and features you will find for under $500, this is definitely worth a look.
Full 1080p video shooting, faster 10fps continuous shooting
The new Canon PowerShot G15 is the most well-balanced G-series camera to date. It may not offer the admittedly more versatile articulating screen of its predecessor, the G12, or the DSLR-like image quality of its big brother, the G1 X, but the combination of greater portability, faster lens, higher-resolution screen and smaller size is a winning one.
Compact and lightweight - pocketable
The PowerShot G15 is a worthy successor to the G12, the question is, does it still have something to offer in a market teeming with options for enthusiast photographers looking for a compact DSLR back up? Canon has made some good calls with the G15, switching the CCD sensor for a higher resolution CMOS one and upgrading to the Digic 5 processor, opting for greater compactness by dropping the articualted screen and fitting a bright f1.8-2.8 zoom lens.
Good low-ISO image detail and reliable metering
The G15 is an evolutionary update from the G12, and on the whole the changes Canon has made look sensible and well-considered. The camera is clearly a well-refined product and a joy to use. It is very quick and responsive in operation, built like a tank and offers the most external controls in its class. Combine that with the fast 28-140mm F1.8-2.8 lens and you've got yourself an ultra-versatile pocketable tool that can be operated almost like a DSLR and earns itself our highest award.
Direct dials and buttons
A lot has changed since the Canon G12 was first debuted, and it's a shame that more excitement couldn't have been allocated to the Canon G15. For instance, a touchscreen, GPS and Wi-Fi would have been a welcome addition. Instead, it feels a little as if the G series has stagnated a little.
