Very good sensor, fast auto focus
Overall, our main criticism of the Olympus OM-D E-M1 lies not with its performance or feature-set, but with its price. £1299 / $1399 body-only is a lot to pay for a compact system camera these days. Sturdy, weather-resistant body with lovely retro styling, Excellent image quality
In most respects the E-M1 does a good job bridging the gap between a traditional DSLR and a Micro Four Thirds camera. Its controls and customizability may overwhelm less hands-on users, but those who don't mind tinkering will love its flexibility. The improved autofocus tracking and performance with original Four Thirds lenses adds to the appeal of a camera with blazingly fast AF acquisition speeds with its native lenses.
Superb electronic viewfinder, Responsive AF system
The Olympus E-M1 delivers the goods across the board, with an impressive specification, fantastic build quality and a level of performance to match or better almost any CSC on the market. All of which combines to make to E-M1 not only one of the best CSCs currently available, but one of the best cameras of any type on the market today.
Best ever image quality from Micro Four Thirds
The Olympus OM-D E-M1 has improved image quality, and with improved handling, as well as an excellent and large electronic viewfinder this should be much more appealing to the professional user. With the addition of built in Wi-Fi, improved handling and controls, as well as support for Four Thirds, and new PRO Micro Four Thirds lenses coming we think the Olympus OM-D E-M1 could be all the camera you'll ever need, as well as being a significantly smaller complete package than traditional...
In-camera processing options like HDR and colour control are very effective
Even though it is a serious camera for enthusiast photographers, the OM-D E-M1 nevertheless brings a lot of fun to the imaging experience. Whether you enjoy using art filters or crave the fast burst speeds, the E-M1 is up to the challenge. The icing on the cake is that it produces great-looking photos.
However, the size and weight advantages of an interchangeable lens camera compared to an SLR are not really the case with the OM-D E-M1, especially when combined with the 12-40mm lens.
Images also looked extremely sharp
Owners of Olympus OM-D EM-5 bodies will rightly see the E-M1 as a worthwhile upgrade option and/or extension to their existing kit - provided they are happy about its higher price tag. The new camera has just enough improvements entice many stills photographers, although not photographers who are more video orientated.
The added support for Four Thirds lenses in the AF system will make the E-M1 attractive to owners of Olympus's older DSLR cameras.
Image quality is unsurprisingly excellent
Ultimately the E-P5 joins the E-M5 as a fantastic compact system camera, albeit again a rather pricey one. It's different enough to its older sibling to warrant careful consideration - smaller, lighter, in some ways more flexible, and with some genuinely useful extra features - so much so that we can recommend the new Olympus E-P5 just as highly as our favourite compact system camera of 2012.
Beautifully-styled and built, with lots of external controls
The E-P5 is the most substantial re-working of the original PEN model, and it's the most impressive yet. It produces the same excellent image quality as the E-M5 and has a proper two-dial control system. This, combined with a better touch screen and arguably the prettiest PEN body, make it a more attractive and more complete camera than the series has seen before.
Excellent image quality, Excellent colour reproduction
The Olympus PEN E-P5 sits at the top of the Olympus PEN range and is the desirable premium mirrorless camera, while lacking weather sealing of the OM-D, the additional features and high IQ from the OM-D should make the E-P5 top of the list for a mirrorless camera. The VF-4 EVF (electronic viewfinder) with a high resolution, large view, and rapid refresh is an excellent bit of kit and well worth adding to the E-P5, making it a real pleasure to shoot with.
Super-fast autofocus, responsive touchscreen
Substance and style meld into one excellent camera. If you're after a compact system camera without a built-in viewfinder then the E-P5 is as good as they come. If a viewfinder is essential then the VF-4 accessory is great, but it might make better financial sense to buy an OM-D E-M5 instead.
Attractive retro design, Efficient and intuitive controls
All the staffers who had a chance to try out the E-P5 loved it, and we were sad to see it leave our hands. It's nicely designed, has a ton of features, and produces really nice images. The noise filter is a bit aggressive that results in less-than-sharp images, but this is easily fixable by adjusting the settings to your liking. The E-P5 is a camera that will do really well in any number of shooting situations, as long as you can handle the price tag.
Fantastic little camera
Very nice quality pictures that can handle high iso noises pretty well, Video quality is amazing with very fast auto focusing. Even at low light, the focus was amazingly well done. I own Canon 7D and I bought this camera for my wife and she is loving it so far. Lots of fun functions built in camera editor, as well as full touch screen effects are really nice. I highly recommend this camera whoever wants to buy a mirrorless. It even comes with free lightroom4 software!
Sharp images even from kit lens, Great Wi-Fi connectivity
The Samsung NX300 really does earn the title of the flagship NX mirrorless camera. It offers a classic leatherette skin draped over a sleek metal body. It is solid and sturdy--the best made NX of the entire lineup. Its image quality is clean and sharp, only giving way to serious pixel degradation at ISOs above 6400.
Deliver significantly more features and performance
The NX300's new 20.3 megapixel sensor delivers excellent still image quality, with a very usable ISO range of 100-6400, plus 1080p HD video at a range of frame rates complete with auto-focusing, full control over the exposure settings, stereo sound and a wealth of other options.
Image quality, Build quality and design
It's clear that a lot of consideration has gone into not only what the Samsung NX300 should do, but also how it should do it, since you're never more than a couple of clicks - or screen taps - away from any particular setting.
Samsung's iFunction lens system continues to impress, with the new Lens Priority function opening up the world of attractive short depth of field photography to less experienced users.
Great image quality
The Samsung NX300 is an welcome refresh to the Samsung NX range, with an impressive 3.31 inch touch screen (the largest on any mirrorless camera), and a good range of Wi-Fi features built in. Image quality is impressive with better results than the previous model, the NX210, thanks to improved noise performance, and excellent levels of detail.
iFunction control system, low light performance
The NX line-up was already strong, and the NX300 solidifies its position as one of the best compact system camera options currently on sale.
There's a pretty heady mix of specs inside its beautiful retro body, with - to coin a clich - something for everyone. For the pros, there's a large sensor, top notch low light performance, and of course the bundled Lightroom software.
Easy Wi-Fi connectivity
Samsung delivers a camera with plenty of power and features to satisfy photographers who want to step-up to an interchangeable lens model. That said, the lack of viewfinder options may be off putting to those who are looking for a compact alternative to an SLR.
The NX300 sells for AU$899 with an 18-55mm OIS III lens. It comes bundled with a free copy of Adobe Lightroom 4, which normally retails at AU$98.75 as a stand-alone package.
Excellent - this camera should cost more
If you're considering an NEX or u43 kit, keep in mind that neither those nor the X-M1 are pocketable. You'll likely carry those cameras in a bag. If you want something truly pocketable, you're probably better off looking at an RX100. So if you'll be using a bag anyways, I would recommend the X-M1 over the NEX or any of the smaller u43 cameras.
Smaller, lighter and significantly cheaper
Ultimately, while we actually preferred the X-E1 to its big brother, the X-Pro1, the same can't be said about the X-M1, despite it being significantly cheaper and shipping with a good kit lens. The lack of a viewfinder is the main problem - for us, it just feels wrong to pick-up an X-series camera and not be able to hold it up to your eye.
Excellent high ISO noise performance
The Fujifilm X-M1 is an interesting development in the X-series and provides the opportunity for those who hanker after the style and performance of the X-E1, but at a more affordable price. With the concurrent launch of a quality kit lens, a telephoto zoom coming later in 2013, and the promise of more affordable XC lenses to come, it's clearly a product the company is committed to.
Solid build quality, despite composite construction
The X-M1 is Fujifilm's entry-level mirrorless camera with its unique X-Trans sensor. While it lacks the build quality and EVF of the more expensive X-E1, it adds a sharper, tilting LCD and Wi-Fi. The X-M1 is capable of taking incredibly sharp photos with very little noise. Performance is very good, although AF speeds are not as quick as the best-in-class mirrorless cameras.The camera is missing a few other handy features too, like an electronic level and remote control via Wi-Fi.
Tilting screen, Small size, Large APS-C sensor
When it comes to shopping for a camera like this, although image quality is good, appearance is still very important. If you're willing to part with a large chunk of change in return for something that looks beautiful but still delivers in the image quality department, then you'll no doubt be pleased with the Fuji X-M1.
If, however, you're looking for your first camera in the interchangeable lens category, and you're on a budget, this wouldn't be our first recommendation.
Low noise, Excellent colour, 3 inch tilting screen
The X-Pro1 and X-E1 with manual control dials, and built in viewfinders were a joy to use due to classic styling and quick photographic control. The Fujifilm X-M1 on the other hand no longer features as many external controls, and with the 16-50mm OIS lens aperture and shutter speed is controlled by the two control wheels. However, the additional of a 3inch tilting screen and built in Wi-Fi, along with a more compact body helps make up for this.
Great image quality is super-sharp
The X-M1 is new ground for Fujifilm: it's a camera targeted towards the masses, yet it maintains a decent level of its all-important pro-spec look and feel. Imperfections there may be, and it can feel a little more B-movie than Hollywood at times, but the X-M1 will score a cult-movie-like following for all its positives. A compact system camera that really shouldn't be overlooked, there's more to it than meets the eye.
Very good image quality, Very good Wi-Fi connectivity
The Samsung NX2000 sits very comfortably between the NX1100 and the NX300--offering users a high quality camera for a reasonable price. If fact, at the time of this review we were able to find the NX2000 for about $600 (making it the same price as the NX1100. That's a $150 savings over the NX300. But is the price difference worth it? Not in my book. I would spend the extra money to get a camera with a little more beef and a hybrid AF system.
I'm not saying the NX2000 is a bad camera.
Delivers excellent still image quality
Sharing the same core DNA as the other NX models, the new NX2000 offers a much more phone-like interface than either the NX300 or range-topping NX20, with built-in wi-fi and NFC connectivity too, so for some people it will actually offer a more familiar handling experience.
Very good value for money, Adobe Lightroom 4 included
The Samsung NX2000 is a fairly compact mirrorless camera with a high resolution 20.3 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, and a large 3.7inch touch screen on the back. The camera delivers impressive image quality with excellent levels of detail and colour with good noise performance. The camera has a good level of control, with the large touch screen helping here, although visibility was not great when outdoors.
Outstanding image quality, Touchscreen LCD is large and sharp
The primary drawback to this camera is it has a slightly higher starting price than some other models in this segment of the market. Considering its feature list, though, the NX2000's price is fair and this camera is a good value. However, some intermediate-level photographers who are looking for an entry-level interchangeable lens cameras may not quite have the budget to afford this feature-rich Samsung offering.
Larger touchscreen, Sharp colourful images, Plenty of detail
The Samsung NX2000 offers the same 20.3-megapixel effective resolution from an APS-C sensor as last year's NX1000 - but that's good news.
We also get a larger touch screen LCD, NFC connectivity, expanded ISO range topping out at ISO25600 and other less important operational tweaks.
Image quality, Ergonomic design, Decent build
Interchangeable Lens Cameras have certainly come a long way from being a clunky piece of contraption to now a sleek and sometimes pocketable device. Sadly though, there are some crucial aspects of the camera that got lost in the transition, such as the case with the Samsung NX2000.
Maybe it's just a case of an old dog, new trick on my part, but I'm really disappointed with the scarcity of physical button on this camera to give way for the fairly large display.
Offers a lot of features and performance at an attractive price
In our view the Lumix G6 is the best overall compact system camera that Panasonic have yet released, offering a great mix of must-have features, intuitive DSLR-like handling and speedy performance, all at a reasonable price. Whether its image quality meets your needs, good as it is for a Micro Four Thirds camera, is perhaps the only reason for looking elsewhere - in all other regards it's very easy for us to strongly recommend the Panasonic Lumix G6 as a fantastic camera in its own right.
Wi-Fi built in - remote operation, Great image quality, Panoramic mode
The Panasonic Lumix G6 is an excellent camera, with very few issues, although battery life could be better. The Wi-Fi features are excellent for remote control and sending images to your smartphone, but uploading to social networks should be much easier, without having to go through the Lumix logon website, which caused some issues.
DSLR-like look and feel
It may sound like feint praise but there's not much wrong with Panasonic's mini DSLR-styled G6. If you don't need the EVF supplied on the 16-megapixel compact system camera then save your money and go for cheaper (most CSCs allow the use of an EF as an add-on extra if you do later change your mind).
If you can't live without it, then be prepared to pay the premium.
Good Image Quality, Good build, Fantastic Touchscreen
Would I recommend this? That would be a Yes and a No! The camera's good, it is lighter and smaller than regular APS-C DSLR's. The implementation by Panasonic is superb with the touchscreen and controls. So what's not to like? The price, of course. The camera will cost Rs 60,000 (MRP) when it comes out in Sept 2013, with a street price around Rs 50,000 approx. That is steep with the present lens kit of 14-42mm.
Smallest full-frame camera available, Impressive noise performance
For those that are looking for the highest image quality possible in a camera that is as compact as possible, then the Sony Cyber-shot RX1R certainly delivers impressive results, however the price is likely to put the general user off. For those trying to decide between the RX1R and original, then the RX1R would suit those looking for sharper images, and if landscapes or similar detailed shots are important to you then the RX1R would be a good choice.
Good image quality, although not consistent
Unfortunately I can't wholeheartedly recommend the Q series cameras to those debating on choosing an ILC system. The Q7 just isn't consistent at giving the user a high quality image straight out of camera. With the Olympus E-PM2 being $50 less than the Pentax Q7 it makes more sense for the average ILC user to choose the Olympus unless a smaller camera with more physical buttons trumps image quality and AF speed.
Looks great and is a lot of fun
In conclusion if you equate small with beautiful then the retro-styled Pentax Q7 is worth further investigation. This may also mean you'll take it out with you more and achieve shots you might not otherwise have attempted. Yet whilst it looks great and is a lot of fun, predictably there are still better compromises between image quality and smaller form factor to be found elsewhere.
Truly compact system camera and easily pocketable lenses
The Pentax Q7 does well in everyday shooting, delivering image quality that's generally as good as the best enthusiast compacts. However, it under delivers for the entry-level ILC class in terms of resolution and high ISO performance. Though we had few serious complaints about its performance, it's hard to recommend among so many excellent fixed and interchangeable lens cameras that cost about the same.
Extremely small body, Good sized screen with decent resolution
If you're a fan of small gadgets, the Pentax Q7 is going to appeal to you, particularly with the range of colours it is available in. It's extremely small, yet packs all the features you'd expect to see on a DSLR, including the ability to change lenses. You've full manual controls, RAW shooting and 5 fps continuous shooting. The screen size and resolution hasn't been compromised and the body and 5-15mm lens have plenty of rubberised grip.
Small proportions, Large sensor, Respectable image quality
The fact that compared with larger, pricier CSC rivals the 12 megapixel Pentax Q7 appears like a bit of a toy may actually appeal to those who like their tech on the cute side. Plus on a creative note your subjects will certainly feel less self-conscious when you poke the Q7 in their face than when confronted with a full size DSLR.
The result is that you'll take shots that you maybe wouldn't have attempted with a larger camera.
Portability, Handling, Features, Build quality
It is undeniably a good quality product capable of excellent results, but will probably struggle to find a grip in a market dominated by larger, more capable rivals. It's probably worth a sober reflection that the Auto 110 was discontinued after seven years, with only two camera models and five lenses. Will the Q system go the same way?
Strong stills, weak video
If you've held off buying into a particular compact system camera, there's never been a better time to finally take the plunge. With the NEX-3N, Sony's put together a winning package, hitting the sweet spot in price and features. Although this camera isn't perfect (as we found with its video features), many first-time camera buyers will probably love it anyway.
User interface is perfect for consumers stepping up from P&S digital cameras
The NEX-3N is capable (with very little effort on the part of the user) of consistently and dependably delivering high quality images and excellent HD video. The NEX-3N successfully combines the P&S simplicity and ease of use of a compact digital camera with the larger sensor and lens interchangeability of a DSLR. To put that another way --the Sony NEX-3N makes the switch from P&S digital cameras to interchangeable-lens cameras as simple and painless as possible.
Image quality is excellent
The Sony NEX-3N is one of the cheapest compact system cameras on the market, but remarkably it's also one of the more accomplished, providing an intuitive upgrade path for compact camera owners, or simply being a small and light camera that delivers great results. There aren't too many bargains in the camera market, but the new Sony NEX-3N definitely qualifies as one of them.
Tilting screen, Small size
The Sony NEX-3N is not a camera for advanced photographers looking for something to replace or sit alongside their DSLRs. Luckily, Sony already has cameras that meet that brief in its lineup.
Instead, what we have here is something that anybody can pick up and be assured of great image quality.
Image quality, Noise performance, Compact size, Quick performance
The Sony NEX-3N is an excellent entry level mirrorless camera, delivering excellent image quality, without compromising on handling or design. The camera has a good tilting 3inch screen with a decent resolution, and built in flash, as well as a number of options that would suit the beginner or those looking to add more creativity to shots.
APS-C sensor for the price of a point and shoot
In closing, let us make it very clear that the Alpha NEX-3N IS the best camera you can buy for under Rs. 30,000. If you were considering getting an advanced point and shoot, forget it. Get the Alpha NEX-3N instead for its bigger sensor, incredibly compact size and the versatility of being able to swap lenses.
Outstanding sharpness scores
The Fujifilm X-E1 is all of the fun and none of the frivolity of the X-Pro1. The decision to exchange the hybrid OVF for lower costs will make a lot of consumers happy, but keeping performance at basically the same level is the real achievement here. We loved having this camera in-house and hate to see it go. Anyone whoâ?? s been watching this series but put off by the price should take a second look.
Intuitive handling, fantastic image quality
Retailing for £749 in the UK and $1000 in the US for the body-only, or £1149 / $1399 with the new 18-55mm f/2.8-4 OIS lens, means that you can buy the X-E1 with a great kit lens for less than the body-only launch price of the X-Pro1 (although obviously this is now significantly less). It also pits the X-E1 directly against the Olympus OM-D E-M5 and the Sony NEX-7, both of which are great cameras, but both of which are quite different in their approach.
Excellent image quality, Superb high ISO noise performance
The X-E1 is a great follow up model to Fujifilm's X-Pro 1 providing most of what the more expensive flagship model offers at a significantly lower price point. For purists, an optical viewfinder on a rangefinder style camera will be a must-have feature and the X-Pro 1's hybrid viewfinder is a technological wonder. But if you can live without an optical viewfinder, the X-E1's EVF is one of the best around and is arguably better suited to an interchangeable lens camera.
Unique camera design makes you want to take pictures
Overall, we really enjoyed shooting with the Fujifilm X-E1, and I'm very pleased with the images I got out of it. The camera crashed on occasion (it wouldn't be a new X-series camera if it didn't have some bugs...), leaving buttons unresponsive, and focus and exposure sometimes delivered odd results, but powering off usually cleared the error.
Stunning image quality
While it might be tempting to think of the X-E1 as a stripped back X-Pro1, that does it something of a disservice in that the X-E1 is a great camera in its own right. Gifted with the same premium grade construction and finish, the X-E1 feels more refined and balanced than it's more expensive sibling.
Impressive colour reproduction
The Fujifilm X-Pro1 and X-E1 are the definition of retro digital cameras, and the moment you pick it up, you'll be reminded of an old film camera from the past. With manual controls on the lens and body it is very easy to adjust settings and the menus and controls are well thought out and easy to get to grips with. The electronic viewfinder is excellent with an extremely high resolution and is great to use, although it's a shame the 2.8inch screen isn't larger and a higher resolution.
Image quality is excellent, build quality is superb
It's not cheap and the autofocus speed isn't going to see off its nearest competitors, but the X-E1 is a tool that never takes its eye off the image-quality ball, all wrapped up into a super chic retro-styled body. It looks great, its images look even greater, and that's where this retro snapper wins. However the limited selection of current XF lenses may be seen as an issue and this pro-targeted model isn't going to suit all tastes or needs on account of its AF system.
Extremely low image noise up to ISO 6400
The Fuji X-E1 follows the X-Pro1 with the same 16 MP CMOS sensor that delivers class-leading image quality thanks to its unique X-Trans sensor which does not use an anti-alias filter.
The X-E1 is an excellent successor to the X-Pro1. While it does not address all issues, it improves upon the X-Pro1 considerably with a better EVF in a smaller body, faster performance and even a considerably lower price tag.
Retro styling, Less daunting than the X-Pro1
The 16.3 effective megapixel, 1920x1080 pixels Full HD video shooting Fujifilm X-E1 competes directly with the Olympus OM-D E-M5 in the retro styled compact camera system stakes. While, if you prefer the more modernist look, the Sony NEX-7 and cheaper Sony NEX-6 likewise offer an eye-level viewfinder, as well as the larger format APS-C sensor for almost DSLR-style picture quality.
