Faster auto-focus and burst shooting speeds
The price of the Canon PowerShot G16 is an eye-watering £529.00 / $549.99, which makes it more expensive than the class-leading Sony Cyber-shot RX100, itself bested by the RX100 Mark II, albeit at an even higher price-point. Despite the improvements, we still feel that the RX100/RX100 II with its much larger sensor delivers even better results than the G16, making it our choice in the "pocketable compact camera for enthusiasts" sector of the market.

The G16 is an easy camera to underestimate, on the face of it, it doesn't seem like it has a lot to offer one year on from its predecessor and at first glance you'd probably guess that existing G15 owners would hold off for whatever the G17 might have to offer. But I think G15 owners will see it differently, and that means anyone else looking for an advanced compact as a DSLR understudy should probably think likewise and give the G16 some serious consideration.
Excellent build quality, Manual focus with focus peaking
The Canon Powershot G16 offers a number of improvements over the previous model, including a number of new and useful shooting modes including Handheld HDR, Star modes, and built in Wi-Fi for quicker sharing, although the lack of remote shooting will be disappointing to many.
Photos are impressive with excellent colour, detail and exposure, with numerous options to expand dynamic range.
Image quality is great, raw shooting option
The G16 may be starting to look a little dated, particularly when you compare it to something like Sony's sleek RX100, but that doesn't stop the Canon remaining a top-notch snapper all round. When something's right, it's just right - and the G16 largely represents that. It won't suit all photographers on account of its bulky size, but for those that it will, it'll be spot on.
The camera delivers image quality that's consistently good, certainly among the best in class.
Good photos and videos, Enhanced response (fps, focusing)
Although Canon has made some strides with the G16 - closing the spec gap with CSCs and DSLRs on paper - we can't give it our strongest recommendation. At $550 it's just too expensive for the level of quality it delivers. We suggest anyone looking for an enthusiast pocket zoom to take a serious look at the Sony RX100 II and spend the extra bucks ($749) or check out the less expensive RX100, which is the same price as the G16 but doesn't have Wi-Fi.
Impeccable build quality, Start-up has got much quicker
The Canon PowerShot G16 is a reassuring camera that does a good job. Its only real stand-out feature is improved responsiveness brought by the Digic 6 image processor. It'll be an ideal companion for users looking for a classic safe bet and who aren't tempted by originality or eye-catching innovations. This camera is certainly built to stand the test of time, but the G series also needs to move with the times, otherwise it risks being left behind.
As with all new technology.. there are always some glitches
As far as picture quality (the lens does work with the exception of the two things mentioned) I have been very happy. I do feel like adding a few steps of sharpness helps the images (custom picture settings are available for user to define), but I am wondering now if that may also be the lens issue.
Excellent image quality, straight-forward handling and quick performance
So while the Nikon D5300 doesn't add that many new features to the year-old D5200, what it does add makes it a unique product at the mid-range price-point, offering something genuinely different to the likes of the Canon EOS 650D, Pentax K-5 II and the Sony A65. The combination of a free-angle screen, great video mode, high-quality stills and new connectivity options mean that the Nikon D5300 is a worthy winner of our Highly Recommended award.
1080p60 HD video mode, Excellent image quality
The Nikon D5300 is what's often referred to in the technology world as an 'evolutionary' upgrade. Nikon has abandoned the D5200's optical low pass filter, which might have been considered revolutonary a year ago, but now looks, to borrow a fashion industry term, 'on trend'. That's not to say it's frivolous or unwarranted, given that it improves the D5300's image quality with no apparent drawbacks (Moire wasn't an issue in any of my test shots) it's absolutely the right move.
Built-in Wi-fi addition, Good build quality
Although the Nikon D5300 certainly isn't perfect, with the lack of a touchscreen and a high price-tag at launch two noticeable issues, it's among best DSLRs on the market and is certainly worthy of consideration if you're in the market for an upgrade from your first DSLR, CSC or advanced compact.
Built in Wi-Fi and GPS, Improved ISO performance
The Nikon D5300 takes the tried and tested Nikon D5x00 series and updates it with a new more compact body, upgrading the screen in the process to a larger 3.2inch version and adding built in Wi-Fi and GPS into the mix. Along with this the 24 megapixel sensor now features no optical low pass filter, which will give improved image quality when shooting with high quality lenses, and we would recommend using prime lenses to get the best out of the camera.
Delivers great performance, weather-resistant build quality
We really can't think of anything bad to say about the new Pentax K-3, other than it deserves a better lens than either the 18-55 or 18-135mm kit lenses to realise its true potential. Pentax may not be as big or have the kudos of Nikon and Canon, but in the new K-3, they definitely have a fantastic semi-pro DSLR camera that's worthy of our highest Essential! award.
Superb clarity in image quality with 24MP sensor
Pentax have been consistently producing outstanding DSLRs, well specified and rugged. The K-3 continues that tradition, but honing areas that needed attention such as the AF tracking system and the video capability. The increased resolution and the clean images it produces all set off a well-rounded package that comes very close indeed to challenging very much more expensive kit.
Better handling and importantly faster performance than its predecessor
The new Fujifilm X-E2 offers more features, better handling and importantly faster performance than its predecessor, which we already loved, making it our favourite X-series camera and one of the best compact system cameras around. Fujifilm have clearly listened to their users and produced a camera that may look very much like the original X-E1, but which improves on it in virtually all ways.
Impressive noise performance, Great build quality and handling
The Fujifilm X-E2 improves on the X-E1 and addresses a number of the issues we found with the original camera, including accidentally knocking the exposure compensation dial, this hasn't happened on this new model, as well as adding a larger higher resolution screen. Focus speeds and continuous shooting speed has also been improved with the camera feeling extremely responsive in use.
Delivers excellent image quality
Ultimately, we prefer the X-A1 to the X-M1, as it delivers the same handling, features and performance, and, crucially, very similar image quality at a lower price. This is turn mitigates some of the issues that we had with the X-M1, principally concerning the lack of a viewfinder, so much so that we'd recommend that you save your cash and choose the X-A1 rather than the X-Trans, X-M1 version.
Most affordable Fuji CSC, Natural, vibrant images, Tilting LCD
Most photographers will tell you that image quality is their biggest consideration when selecting a camera, but the build and functionality of the camera are also key factors along with the price. Many manufacturers reduce the functionality and build quality of their more entry-level cameras in order to keep cost down, but Fuji is in the unusual position of being able to achieve the same thing while keeping these two elements the same.
Impressive performance, Outstanding detail and ISO performance
The Fujifilm X-A1 delivers an excellent standard of image quality, is an attractively designed camera and has a strong level of performance. While the lenses in the X series might not be the cheapest on the market, the X-A1 is well worthy of consideration in the entry-level CSC market.
Very good value for money, Excellent noise performance
The 16-50mm OIS kit lens, despite being a kit lens, delivers excellent image quality with a useful wide-angle to telephoto zoom range and includes a good sized lens hood. The combination of this lens and the compact body makes for a compelling package, with the added bonus of a good 3inch tilting screen and built in Wi-Fi connectivity.
Entry-level looks lavish and feels flimsy
When we reviewed the X-M1, we concluded that it was a camera with an excellent sensor in a chintzy body. The X-A1 keeps the same cheap suit, drops in a marginally inferior sensor, and charges you $200 less. Is that a good thing? It depends on what you're shopping for.
Excellent - this camera should cost more
If you're considering an NEX or u43 kit, keep in mind that neither those nor the X-M1 are pocketable. You'll likely carry those cameras in a bag. If you want something truly pocketable, you're probably better off looking at an RX100. So if you'll be using a bag anyways, I would recommend the X-M1 over the NEX or any of the smaller u43 cameras.
Smaller, lighter and significantly cheaper
Ultimately, while we actually preferred the X-E1 to its big brother, the X-Pro1, the same can't be said about the X-M1, despite it being significantly cheaper and shipping with a good kit lens. The lack of a viewfinder is the main problem - for us, it just feels wrong to pick-up an X-series camera and not be able to hold it up to your eye.
Excellent high ISO noise performance
The Fujifilm X-M1 is an interesting development in the X-series and provides the opportunity for those who hanker after the style and performance of the X-E1, but at a more affordable price. With the concurrent launch of a quality kit lens, a telephoto zoom coming later in 2013, and the promise of more affordable XC lenses to come, it's clearly a product the company is committed to.
Solid build quality, despite composite construction
The X-M1 is Fujifilm's entry-level mirrorless camera with its unique X-Trans sensor. While it lacks the build quality and EVF of the more expensive X-E1, it adds a sharper, tilting LCD and Wi-Fi. The X-M1 is capable of taking incredibly sharp photos with very little noise. Performance is very good, although AF speeds are not as quick as the best-in-class mirrorless cameras.The camera is missing a few other handy features too, like an electronic level and remote control via Wi-Fi.
Tilting screen, Small size, Large APS-C sensor
When it comes to shopping for a camera like this, although image quality is good, appearance is still very important. If you're willing to part with a large chunk of change in return for something that looks beautiful but still delivers in the image quality department, then you'll no doubt be pleased with the Fuji X-M1.
If, however, you're looking for your first camera in the interchangeable lens category, and you're on a budget, this wouldn't be our first recommendation.
Low noise, Excellent colour, 3 inch tilting screen
The X-Pro1 and X-E1 with manual control dials, and built in viewfinders were a joy to use due to classic styling and quick photographic control. The Fujifilm X-M1 on the other hand no longer features as many external controls, and with the 16-50mm OIS lens aperture and shutter speed is controlled by the two control wheels. However, the additional of a 3inch tilting screen and built in Wi-Fi, along with a more compact body helps make up for this.
Great image quality is super-sharp
The X-M1 is new ground for Fujifilm: it's a camera targeted towards the masses, yet it maintains a decent level of its all-important pro-spec look and feel. Imperfections there may be, and it can feel a little more B-movie than Hollywood at times, but the X-M1 will score a cult-movie-like following for all its positives. A compact system camera that really shouldn't be overlooked, there's more to it than meets the eye.
Amazing Image Quality
As a professional photographer who mostly carries a 36 megapixel Nikon D800 SLR, I also needed a strong ultra-compact camera for those times when the big camera is just too much or I need to be inconspicuous in my shooting, and also for convenient personal/family use. For both uses, I find that the RX-100, Model 2 really exceeds all of my expectations.
Chromatic aberrations are well controlled and colours accurate
With the rise of the samrtphone seemingly sounding the death knell for cheap compact cameras, it looks like only premium models like the new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II II will survive their onslaught. Only you can decide if the RX100 II's premium price-tag is simply too high - for us, while it does take the edge off the overall package, the RX100 II is definitely the best compact camera that money can currently buy.
Image quality is at the top of its class
The RX100 II performs much the same as its RX100 predecessor, turning out some of the best image quality we've seen from a compact camera. With the addition of Wi-Fi connectivity and a BSI sensor, it's at the top of its class in terms of performance and features. With a few caveats regarding the shooting experience, it's a clear class-leader.
Excellent image quality, Compact, pocketable camera
The RX100 II's image quality is noticeably improved over the already good RX100, with impressive noise performance even at high ISO settings up to and including ISO6400, with the multi-frame noise reduction performing significantly better than the previous model. With additional features and greater versatility the Sony Cyber-shot RX100 II could be the last compact camera you'll ever need, and is therefore Highly Recommended.
Handles low light shots well
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II is a fine point and shoot that can surely change people's perception of cameras. In fact it can serve as a very good pocket-able option for those who don't fancy lugging their DSLRs everywhere. Coupled with an Exmor R sensor and a 1" wide sensor opening, the snapper can handle light better than its predecessor, the DSC-RX100 (Rs 34,000). However, it poses a steep learning curve, which shouldn't be a deterrent.
Very good still image quality, Eye-Fi wireless compatibility
I'm not sure K-30 owners will be rushing out to trade into a K-50 in order to acquire an Eye-Fi capability missing from their current platform, but folks looking for a new or first-time DSLR can rest assured the K-50 is a worthy successor to the K-30, and that's a ringing endorsement indeed.
Excellent image quality, Dustproof and weather resistant
The Pentax K-50 is a very strong offering from Pentax, with a few unique bonuses such as weather resistance and even the range of colours. The idea of personalising a camera is something relatively new in the UK, but why not? It adds a certain something and takes nothing away. A rugged and reliable all weather DSLR that is well worth a look.
Internal shake resistance, Can run on AA batteries
The Pentax K-50 makes for a good starter option, and we were impressed with the lightning quick speed of its operation at this price point - with auto focus being particularly impressive. However, we did feel that overall the translucent APS-C sensor equipped Sony A58, or indeed Pentax's otherwise very similar K-500 DSLR, offer a slightly better value deal for an entry-level camera.
A 'Fixed' D600 but a Failed Nikon Brand
I purchased the Nikon D600 when it first came out and THANKFULLY returned it when the dust/oil began to pop up on the sensor. I feel horrible for anyone that kept the D600 and now has a faulty camera out of warranty that has (essentially) been decommissioned from Nikon as a faulty product they don't want to fix. Thus the D610: a Nikon D600 with no dust and oil issues.
Great, responsive and versatile tool
That the D610 is lighter than any other Nikon FX digital SLR camera is a real boon to anyone planning to use it for extended periods of time, though be prepared that it's still quite a handful and noticeably heavier than the cheapest auto focus SLRs of the film era (then again, it's a much higher specified model than any of those). The Nikon D610's mirror is surprisingly quiet for a full-frame SLR camera and in normal use it produces only minimal viewfinder blackout.
High build quality, Excellent quality images
While the Nikon D610 is an excellent camera that's capable of recording plenty of detail in images with rich tones, good exposure and pleasant colours it is considerably more expensive the Canon 6D which can be bought for around $1899/£1475.
Those photographers who aren't tied to Nikon by a stash of lenses may feel tempted to invest in the Canon camera instead.
Excellent image quality, Excellent noise performance
The Nikon D610, like the D600 before, is a full-frame 24.3 megapixel camera with excellent image quality and performance. It offers excellent noise performance, excellent image quality with good detail even as the ISO setting increases, and puts it all into a rugged weather sealed body with a great 3.2inch screen. The camera offers advanced Full HD video recording with both microphone and headphone sockets, and video benefits from the full frame sensor in low-light situations.
I have the professional Canon 5D Mark 2 camera with all the lenses, flash filters and everything else, but I needed a small camera for riding my motorcycle to events. After researching I settled on the Canon PowerShot SX510 HS, which I am glad I did. The first weekend I took over 300 photographs and I am extremely happy with this camera. I was really surprised at how small it is but it does take a nice 12 meg picture. For the price, I can't imagine using anything else.
Excellent optical image stabilisation, Built-in Wifi and GPS linking
In amongst all the good news, there are a couple of minor gripes. The chromatic aberration at either end of the zoom range takes the edge off its otherwise excellent image quality, especially as it's something that could be corrected digitally by a new image processor. And while it's nice to see an improvement in the previously mediocre continuous shooting performance, it's still hardly fast in that regard.
Very good image quality, Lots of zoom in a compact body
The Canon PowerShot SX510 HS packs all the features you'd typically expect to see in a bridge camera, but is much smaller than many of its competitors, even though it has built-in Wi-Fi. The reduction in the size of the camera means that the battery is small and therefore doesn't have a particularly long life. There are full manual controls but no RAW shooting, but the lens has a minimum focusing distance of 0cm, so you can get as close as you want to your subject for macro photography.
Lightweight and compact, despite housing 30x zoom
The SX510 HS is a decent superzoom camera targeted towards the budget market. As long as you don't expect the same experience as a more expensive camera, or exemplary performance from handheld night photography, it's a fair buy. Unfortunately, Canon Australia does not issue official RRPs, but street prices for this camera average around AU$270.
