A jack-of-all-trades with the best amateur video available
This is the most significant DSLR Canon has introduced since the 7D. It's the first one I've reviewed without some major caveat. And that's unusual. Canon doesn't often make game-changing cameras. They do what they did with the 30D, T3i, T5i, and 6D: make incremental improvements and leave a lot on the table. That's not what happened here, and so much the better.
Good still image quality, Good ISO noise performance
Is the 70D an automatic "must have" for 60D owners? If they shoot a lot of video, almost certainly - in video performance alone the 70D really outclasses the 60D, in no small part due to the lack of continuous AF in the 60D to begin with. Primarily shoot stills but a lot of bursts for sports or wildlife photography? Maybe - those extra 2 fps are a fairly significant jump over the 60D. Looking for your first DSLR and want/expect to shoot a lot of video?
Excellent image quality
Indeed, until we see Dual-Pixel CMOS AF inevitably make its way across the EOS range, we'd recommend the new Canon EOS 70D as the APS-C camera to go for if you're currently considering a mid-range DSLR camera. It offers a winning blend of features, performance and image quality that is hard to beat, both by its EOS brothers and other manufacturers' offerings. The new EOS 70D marks a real step forward for both Canon and the venerable SLR camera.
Great image quality, high resolution and low noise
Many cameras involve some compromises in what you can take, but the 70D suffers from little if any of those limitations. It can quickly respond to a wide variety of situations, taking high quality stills, tracking fast action through the viewfinder, shooting high speed bursts and confidently refocusing for movies. These make the 70D one of the most capable all-round cameras I've tested, even if the star of the show is the continuous movie AF.
Great touchscreen performance
The Canon EOS 70D is a real step forward in the world of DSLR photography, and if you shoot a lot of video, or find yourself using live view image capture with any regularity, it's a great choice. But It's not without its faults, with a few bugs in the Creative Filter settings proving particularly disappointing, although on the whole it's an impressive bit of kit that will change the way DSLRs handle AF technology in the future.
Excellent colour, Excellent vari-angle 3inch touch screen
The new dual pixel AF feature noticeably improves focus during video and live view, as promised, this will be particularly impressive and useful for those who shoot with Canon lenses for video or live view use, although at the expense of battery life, which drops dramatically from the otherwise excellent 920 shots offered.
7fps burst at full resolution with decent buffer, great image quality
Great new technology, great image quality, and great in use - there are only a few nitpick shortcomings to the Canon EOS 70D. Otherwise it's as close to redefining the mid-level DSLR sector as we've seen in recent years. It sure does earn its stripes; this is the colonel of cameras and deservedly so.
As with all new technology.. there are always some glitches
As far as picture quality (the lens does work with the exception of the two things mentioned) I have been very happy. I do feel like adding a few steps of sharpness helps the images (custom picture settings are available for user to define), but I am wondering now if that may also be the lens issue.
Excellent image quality, straight-forward handling and quick performance
So while the Nikon D5300 doesn't add that many new features to the year-old D5200, what it does add makes it a unique product at the mid-range price-point, offering something genuinely different to the likes of the Canon EOS 650D, Pentax K-5 II and the Sony A65. The combination of a free-angle screen, great video mode, high-quality stills and new connectivity options mean that the Nikon D5300 is a worthy winner of our Highly Recommended award.
1080p60 HD video mode, Excellent image quality
The Nikon D5300 is what's often referred to in the technology world as an 'evolutionary' upgrade. Nikon has abandoned the D5200's optical low pass filter, which might have been considered revolutonary a year ago, but now looks, to borrow a fashion industry term, 'on trend'. That's not to say it's frivolous or unwarranted, given that it improves the D5300's image quality with no apparent drawbacks (Moire wasn't an issue in any of my test shots) it's absolutely the right move.
Built-in Wi-fi addition, Good build quality
Although the Nikon D5300 certainly isn't perfect, with the lack of a touchscreen and a high price-tag at launch two noticeable issues, it's among best DSLRs on the market and is certainly worthy of consideration if you're in the market for an upgrade from your first DSLR, CSC or advanced compact.
Built in Wi-Fi and GPS, Improved ISO performance
The Nikon D5300 takes the tried and tested Nikon D5x00 series and updates it with a new more compact body, upgrading the screen in the process to a larger 3.2inch version and adding built in Wi-Fi and GPS into the mix. Along with this the 24 megapixel sensor now features no optical low pass filter, which will give improved image quality when shooting with high quality lenses, and we would recommend using prime lenses to get the best out of the camera.
Perfect Upgrade from D5100
If you're starting to outgrow your lower tier DX camera, get this one - you won't be disappointed. I already have quite a few DX lenses and don't feel like replacing them with FX lenses and I actually prefer the crop factor (1.5x teleconverter in effect) on my big nasty 70-200 2.8.
Sharpness was very strong
Aside from white balance, the D7100 leaves us with little to complain about. Videography is definitely improved over previous models, but there are some strange control quirks, and plenty of better video-oriented SLRs already exist on the market. Nikon could also do a much better job communicating its "unique" control techniques to new users.
Excellent build quality
There isn't much that we can say is wrong with the D7100 except for a couple of minor quibbles. But in the end, this may just be the best darned ASP-C DSLR that we've seen in a while. The fast fps shooting abilities will appeal to birding shooters, the dad photographing their kid's basketball game (and this is probably the perfect camera for it, and for the weekend landscaper.
Exposure, colour and white balance were all uniformly reliable
In summary the new Nikon D7100 further improves on the already excellent D7000 in several key ways and many minor ones, all adding up to make this the best DX-format DSLR to date. Nikon may be focusing on a full-frame future, but the D7100 clearly shows that they haven't forgotten the cropped sensor market. It may look almost identical to its predecessor, but the Nikon D7100 certainly proves that first impressions can be very deceiving.
Outstanding low ISO performance in both JPEG and Raw files
The D7100 is a well-built enthusiast DSLR that offers impressive image quality and easy access to shooting parameters along with a high degree of customization options. Video output is a bit disappointing and a very small image buffer limits sports shooters to JPEG-only mode.
Excellent LCD screen
There's no denying that the D7100 is an incredibly well-rounded DSLR with one of the most complete enthusiast DSLR feature-sets we've seen to date. The lack of an anti-aliasing filter gives images a pleasing crispness, while metering and White Balance systems are also difficult to fault.
Despite all of this, there are faults. Most noticeably, the high saturation of pixels on the sensor means that images are nosier at lower ISO settings then one would hope.
Excellent image quality and detail
The Nikon D7100 offers a compelling set of features, in a well built weather sealed body with a great looking 3.2inch screen. An updated 51 point focus system ensures focus is rapid and reliable, with the camera responding quickly. The camera features 6fps shooting in JPEG for 99 shots, which can be increased to 7fps when using 1.3x crop mode, although this isn't as quick as the Canon EOS 7D, or the Sony Alpha A77 with 12fps shooting.
Decent sharpness when on point
All in all we're impressed with the D7100 - it delivers great images, has an extensive autofocus system with 1.3x crop option, a long-lasting battery life and both the viewfinder and LCD screen are decent. What we'd like to see is yet more sensor improvements and a more capable buffer for burst shooting in the future - that would elevate this series to the next level.
Solid performance, good value, Nikon nails it again!
This camera may be the best APS-C in its class so far. After Nikon's quality control issue with the full-frame D600 (sensor oil spot problem), Nikon may be able to win back its trust with this new release, again aimed at enthusiasts and amateur photographers. Being an amateur photographer for years and have invested quite a sum in Sony, Canon and Nikon bodies and lenses, I myself settled with Nikon in personal preference.
Design is easy to use and comfortable to handle
The ultimate irony of these cameras is this: when the D5100 first came to market we awarded it both Camera of the Year, and Budget DSLR of the Year. It was just such an amazing deal, with rare levels of performance at the price point. But after two years and little improvement for the D5200, this great camera didn't hit us with the same impact its predecessor did. Like we've said countless times in the review, the D5200 is a fine camera, but it's not $300 finer than the old one.
Good still and video image quality
The D5200 is a nice little camera with no glaring deficiencies and would make a fine first DSLR for someone moving out of the compact digital ranks. It would be a great follow-on camera for someone who's cut their teeth on an earlier model Nikon DSLR but doesn't want to go all the way to the prosumer D7100. I'm just left wishing Nikon had added a few more external controls and some weather sealing.
Undoubtedly a great all-round DSLR
The new Nikon D5200 may not reinvent the wheel in any way, but it is undoubtedly a great all-round DSLR that's well-suited to a lot of different users and experience levels, exactly what a mass-market camera should be, and judged on that criteria, the Nikon D5200 is once again a very worthy winner of our Highly Recommended award.
Impressive 39-point AF system, Continuous shooting speed of 5fps
Costing £649 body only, or £719 with the 18-55mm VR kit lens, the D5200 currently costs around £320 more than the equivalent D5100 package. The developments to the D5200's internal specification - most notably the 39-point AF system and 24.1MP sensor - result in a truly impressive specification for a consumer model. It delivers stunning image quality and is a pleasing camera to use, but is it really worth the additional £300 or so?
Produces detailed images, Excellent ISO performance
When we reviewed the D5100 in April of 2011 we were impressed and gave it our highly recommended award. The biggest change on the D5200 is the upgrade to the 24.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, with the D5200 producing 5 star quality images. The D5200 can also shoot at a faster rate of 5 fps in continuous shooting.
The D5200 is compatible with a number of accessories such as the Wireless Mobile Adapter (WU-1a) allowing sharing of images with mobile devices.
Good picture quality, vari-angle LCD screen, decent autofocus system with motorised lenses
We love the D5200's low-mid sensitivity shots which are among the best in class, and the 39-point autofocus sensor is quality too. But a lack of the usual array of Nikon quick-access DSLR buttons, no touchscreen, banding hidden in shadow areas of raw files and poor movie clips hold the model back. The new sensor is a double-edged sword that brings both good and bad to the table from what we've seen.
Spectacular image quality
The Nikon D600 was one of the worst-kept secrets in the industry this year, and the enthusiast and prosumer crowd has been foaming at the mouth to see what an affordable full-frame camera from Nikon would look like. The Nikon D600 does not disappoint, offering nearly every bit of control that the impressive D800 offers, with comparable features.
Excellent image quality, Full feature set, Dual SD card slots
The Nikon D600's release (along with that of the Canon 6D) has made full-frame shooting available to a broader market than ever before. This is particularly important for Nikon users since photographers with DX cameras don't have to buy new lenses when stepping up to the D600.
Additionally, the D600 offers a 24 megapixel sensor, a full complement of features that almost rival those of the more expensive D800 and performance that will meet the needs of most photographers.
Great, responsive and versatile tool
If you think you can live with that and a few other limitations / omissions versus the D800; the smaller, lighter and cheaper Nikon D600 will serve you just as well as the more expensive model - and even give you faster frame rates and more manageable raw file sizes as an added bonus.
Built-in AF motor for non AF-S lenses
From Nikon's point of view, the D600 has a tough role to fulfill. Primarily, it's an 'entry level' full frame DSLR designed to appeal to enthusiast photographers looking for the kind of build, image quality and features provided by pro DSLRs at a more affordable price. It's also got to function as a pro model backup, able to tick the same boxes as high end models like the D800 and D4, without being so good it begins to look like an attractively priced replacement rather than a supplement.
Outstanding low and high ISO performance in both JPEG and Raw files
There's a lot to like in the Nikon D600. In fact, really, there are very few areas in which it can be legitimately criticized given its market position and price point. Being a mid-range DSLR (albeit towards the top end) it lacks the customization options of the D800 (and D300S) and borrows its operational ergonomics primarily from the D7000.
Compact and light, Outstanding sensor performance
The superb sensor, extensive yet accessible features and compactness make the Nikon D600 an exceptionally user-friendly full-frame.
It's a pity the Nikon D600's larger sensor commands such a price premium over the Nikon D7000, but assuming it sees the kind of price reductions that the D800 has undergone, we're in for a treat.
But Nikon won't have this sector to itself for long. Canon's new full-frame EOS 6D will undercut the Nikon D600 on size, weight and price. Let battle commence.
Compact design may well appeal to many
On paper the D600 looks to be an attractive proposition and Nikon's attempt to once again bring an affordable full-frame DSLR to the enthusiast market is certainly to be applauded. There are, however, two things that may hold it back. The first of these is its closeness in price to the higher-spec and more robust D800, although given time we wouldn't be surprised to see the gap in price widen between the two models.
Excellent image quality, Excellent noise performance
The Nikon D600 is a full-frame 24.3 megapixel camera with excellent image quality and performance. It offers excellent noise performance, excellent image quality with good detail even as the ISO setting increases, and puts it all into a rugged weather sealed body with a great 3.2inch screen. The camera offers advanced Full HD video recording with both microphone and headphone sockets, and videos benefit from the full frame sensor in low-light situations.
Excellent image quality, small and light for a full-frame camera
The D600 opens the full-frame door to many that would never otherwise be able to afford such a DSLR. It's not exactly cheap, but it's great value for money when considering both the build and image quality. The feature set is much like a D800 mashed up with a D7000 - an excellent blend of pro and consumer features therefore kit out this full-framer and it definitely gets our seal of approval.
Love this Camera!!!
I am a proud owner of the Pentax K-5 and very happy with everything about it. I just received the Pentax K-5 II and tested it out. I tried it in a low light situation and the images are better. In addition, the LCD screen on the back of the camera is much better and I can better determine if the image is tack sharp or not. I would highly recommend to spend the extra amount and go for the K-5 II instead of the K-5 at a discount.
Vastly improved autofocus in low-light shooting
Photographers buying their first top-tier DSLR will have a tough choice ahead, but Pentaxians are likely to stick with the home team. If you're looking to upgrade from a K-7, K20D, or K-x and don't shoot in low light or with fast primes (brighter than f/2.8), the K-5 is a great choice and a real money-saver. But if you just love shallow depth of field and need the flexibility to shoot in extremely dim light, the K-5 II is your answer.
Image quality is excellent
The K-5 II's image quality is excellent, producing noise-free images all the way from from ISO 80-800. Noise starts to become apparent at ISO 1600, with a little more noise and smearing of fine detail at the higher settings of 3200 and 6400, while the fastest speeds of 12800, 25600 are suitable for smaller prints. The incredible headline-grabbing top-speed of 512000 is frankly unusable - Pentax should have followed Nikon's lead and stopped the range at 25600.
Good detail and dynamic range (even better in Raw)
A good, solid, weather-sealed camera with a tried-and-true sensor, the Pentax K-5 II remains a solid digital SLR that's easy to recommend. With a decided bent toward enthusiast users, the Pentax K-5 II pairs well with the company's line of Limited lenses, and is good to have along with a Weather Resistant lens on a rainy day.
Solid build, Ease of use, Decent sensor
Like its predecessor, the Pentax K-5 II succeeds where it matters most. It produces high image quality (although its resolution scores are a little low), boasts strong autofocus performance, high build quality and is easy to use. It is a pity we can't add the camera's exposure metering to the list of superlatives, because capable though it is, the few occasions where overexposure does occur can frustrate.
However, the biggest problem the Pentax K-5 II faces is the old Pentax K-5.
Impressive AF in low light
First and foremost, the Pentax K-5 II represents a relatively minor upgrade over its predecessor, the K-5. It's worth noting though that the original K-5 was a pretty impressive DSLR, so the lack of any great sweeping changes isn't necessarily a bad thing. The main improvements the new model does bring to the table are with regards to AF performance and the viewability of the LCD screen, both of which make a noticeable difference.
Fast operation, Outstanding colour reproduction
The Pentax K-5 II is a rugged, magnesium alloy bodied, weatherproof, well designed and high quality camera with a kit zoom that is really very good indeed, and provides a package that looks very exciting against its rivals. It is more compact, arguably slicker in operation and provides the highest standards at a relatively low price level. There's not much to dislike, so the K-5 can be totally recommended.
Excellent control over image noise
The Pentax K-5 II follows its predecessor by two years with an almost identical specification which hides the most sensitive autofocus system yet. The new SAFOX X AF system is sensitive down to -3 EV which is beyond any available digital camera. The simultaneously-launched K-5 IIs which lacks an anti-alias filter is the only DSLR to top the image quality of the original K-5. The K-5 II lands right between them.
Image quality, Colour reproduction
Pentax has followed up its highly regarded K5 with an equally impressive consumer dSLR. With good image quality and great interface design in both the hardware and software, it's a very enjoyable camera to use. Although a little more expensive than some direct competitors, it's well worth serious consideration.
Generally impressive image quality
For those with prior lens family affiliation, your decision is already made. Almost all the praise we have for the Nikon D600 also applies to the 6D. We think the autofocus system does lag behind - only by a little - but enough to make this camera a slightly inferior choice for action photography. Otherwise, the Canon EOS 6D is tied for the best entry point for new full-frame photographers, and yes, represents a fantastic value, even at $2100.
Outstanding pictures in both good and bad light
Compared to the 5D Mark III's official price of £2999 / $3499, the 6D is something of a bargain at £1799 / $2099, especially as it delivers very similar image quality to its big brother. The only fly in the ointment in terms of price is the Nikon D600, which due to being released earlier now typically undercuts the 6D by a couple of hundred pounds / dollars. Still, the EOS 6D should also drop in price once the novelty has worn off.
Tough, moisture and dust resistant body, Built-in Wi-Fi and GPS
The Canon EOS 6D is an extremely capable and well-designed full-frame digital SLR that provides a clear upgrade choice for anyone looking to graduate from an APS-C model to a full-frame DSLR. It combines excellent image quality with superb high ISO noise performance, has an AF system that works in very low light levels and adds built-in GPS and Wi-Fi features in a tough, moisture and dust resistant body that's lighter and more compact than other full-frame bodies.
Excellent detail in raw file output across ISO range
The EOS 6D ticks off many of the things an APS-C DSLR owner could want in a full frame upgrade: great image quality, excellent handling, light weight and a sub-$2100 price tag. The challenge for Canon, of course is that the 6D does not exist in a vacuum.
Enthusiast-centric controls, Remote control via Wi-Fi
All things considered, the Canon EOS 6D is an excellent choice for the enthusiast and club photographer looking for a full-frame DSLR. These users will find that they have just about everything they need, and a bit more besides.
It may take them a while to get to grips with the subtleties of the camera's AF system, and they will have to remember some of the basics of metering when using the iFCL evaluative system in high contrast conditions, but they will appreciate the end results.
Excellent image quality, Excellent high ISO performance
The Canon EOS 6D feels like it's an improvement over the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, and gives most of what you get with the 5D Mark III, but with the addition of GPS and Wi-Fi, as well as the excellent 20.2 megapixel sensor for improved noise performance, but with a fraction of the price of the 5D Mark III, making this an excellent camera for those wanting a full-frame Digital SLR.
Full-frame image quality, EOS Utility wireless shooting via computer has potential
The EOS 6D delivers the image quality, but is paired with a focus system that's a game of two halves: it's great in low-light, but lacks the extended number of AF points that we'd like to see. A partially restricted viewfinder is also a downside, while the likes of Wi-Fi and GPS, "nice" though they are, would have been better off replaced by a more detailed core spec. Some good points and some lessons to be taken from Canon's budget full-framer.
Image quality, Full frame sensor, Built in wifi
It isn't pocket money, but the EOS 6D nonetheless puts full-frame features within reach of the more ambitious enthusiast photographer. I'd have happily swapped the GPS and Wifi for more autofocus points, but it's nonetheless a great body that captures great colours and very detailed shots.
Excellent image quality, Great high ISO performance
We've come to expect follow-on cameras to generally out-do the camera they're replacing features-wise, and the 60D follows suit in most cases compared to the 50D. Sensor resolution is up and an HD video capability exists where none did before. The 3.0-inch LCD monitor is movable and viewfinder coverage is improved, albeit only 1% and only to 96% overall.
Compositional advantage of a tilt and swivel LCD
Canon's robust enthusiast targeted EOS 60D is a more consumer-friendly version of the 50D it replaces. It slots into the current range between the Canon EOS 550D, of interest to those stepping up from a compact, and the semi-professional Canon EOS 7D.
Shoot both still pictures and HD video clips
A DSLR camera for photo enthusiasts who also want to be able to record Full HD video clips.Replacing the popular EOS 50D, Canon's new EOS 60D sits between the EOS 550D and EOS 7D and appears to have the same sensor as its 'siblings'. The company is clearly aiming this model at photo enthusiasts, adding some new features that will attract those upgrading from an entry-level DSLR or Advanced digicam, the most visible being a vari-angle LCD monitor.
Excellent balance, great choice of lenses
The EOS 60D costs a pretty penny, but you'll be rewarded with fine handling, Canon's superb selection of lenses, and excellent video capabilities. We wish the user interface was a little less awkward and some of the key features present in the older 50D had been retained, but you'll get great photos and videos with the EOS 60D.
It features good imaging specs, improved battery life and HD video
This camera performs well with its DIGIC 4 technology, and the Canon EOS 60D professional DSLR camera is a solid choice for anyone looking to take high-quality pictures. We are disappointed that the speed has dropped to 5.3 images per second, while the 50D shoots 6.3 images per second.
Very good still images, Exceptional high ISO performance
The X-Pro1 is a camera that's hard not to like - the retro rangefinder look is cool, controls are nicely placed and materials, build quality and overall fit and finish are quite nice. Auto focus and shutter lag performance are good, as is image quality - combine this with ISO performance that, frankly, sets a new standard for APS-C sensor cameras to my eye and it's clear Fuji has done a lot of things right with their latest mirrorless, interchangeable lens offering.

Excellent image quality at all ISO settings - impressive resolution and low noise
The X-Pro1 is a logical evolution from the fixed-lens FinePix X100, and it shares many of that camera's best attributes. The traditional dial-based control layout makes it a very engaging camera to use, and the clever hybrid optical-electronic viewfinder gives an immersive view of the world while providing as much or little exposure information as you like.
Smooth quality defocused areas
If you are an experienced photographer who's not concerned about having scene modes and ultra-fast autofocusing, there's lots to like about the Fuji X-Pro1. Setting the exposure via an aperture ring and a shutter speed dial seems to come naturally, and the combination of excellent noise control and fast lenses mean that you can shoot with the sensitivity set to automatic without any serious concerns.
Excellent high resolution screen, Stunning image quality
The Fujifilm X-Pro1 is a fantastic camera, in every area it produces the results expected from a premium quality camera. The image quality is stunning, with excellent, and I really mean excellent pixel level detail, with excellent colour reproduction, great dynamic range, excellent high ISO noise results and excellent JPEG output straight from the camera. The lenses are excellent with great handling from the all-metal construction and the bright apertures help render beautiful bokeh.
Class-leading image quality
The Fuji X-Pro1 is a 16 MP digital camera with delivers class-leading image quality thanks to its unique X-Trans sensor which does not use an anti-alias filter. Paired with one of the three excellent XF-mount lenses, the X-Pro1 produces some extremely sharp large prints up to ISO 6400 and even remains usable for mid-size prints until its maximum ISO of 25600.
Excellent image quality, pleasing color rendition
Overall, we felt that the FinePix X-Pro1 shows great promise. We were impressed by its retro good looks, superior performance at high ISO settings and the pleasing colors produced by the new X-trans sensor. However, its sluggish autofocus performance and lower-than-average battery life--issues we hope can be fixed or improved on in a firmware update--prevented us from awarding it our coveted Editor's Choice Award.
Rock-solid build quality
With its rangefinder-like dials and knobs up top, plus DSLR-style controls at the back, the 16.3 megapixel Fuji X-Pro1 is every inch the enthusiast's camera. It encourages experimentation rather than just pointing and shooting, plus, with its buttons and dials, a period of familiarisation will be required even by those used to shooting with either premium fixed lens compacts or digital SLRs.
Blistering 10fps shot-to-shot speed
Regardless, the NEX-7 sports an impressive array of features for a camera of any size, and we're excited to see if its final image quality can live up to the camera's robust spec sheet. Once we get our hands on a final production model we'll let you know if the NEX-7 is even more than the sum of its parts, or just another paper tiger.
Compact, well-built, easy-to-hold body
Overall, the Sony Alpha NEX-7 is a pricey, yet excellent mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Whether we're talking performance, photo quality, or features, the NEX-7 does just about everything right. The one thing that may bother some folks is the user interface, so you'll definitely want to try the camera out in person if you can. Even with the complex interface, the NEX-7 is still a camera that I can highly recommend.
Excellent built-in viewfinder
The Sony NEX-7 is a fantastic compact system camera that firmly delivers on its early promise, delivering a remarkably customisable camera that really can be configured to suit many different users. The combination of an excellent built-in viewfinder, handy pop-up flash, tiltable LCD screen and a high-resolution APS-C sensor, all in a light and compact body, simply can't be beaten.
Big, bright ultra high resolution EVF
Ever since the NEX range was launched, photography enthusiasts have been waiting for a model that would exploit its potential to the full and the NEX-7 finally delivers on that promise. What makes the difference is the outstandingly good electronic viewfinder and the three dial control system augmented by navigation and AF/MF/AEL buttons.
Exceptionally 'deep' feature set including Auto HDR and Sweep Panorama
When the NEX-7 was first announced, it looked as though Sony had gathered together a set of enthusiasts' wish lists and built a camera to exceed them all. From the compact 'rangefinder style' body with its built-in electronic viewfinder, through the high resolution sensor offering 24MP stills and Full HD 60p video, to the triple-control-dial interface, it ticked all the right boxes on paper. There's little doubt that the NEX-7 is one of the most exciting cameras of 2011.
Very good dynamic range
Despite the occasional shortfall, the NEX-7 is a very pleasant camera to use, especially when you've customised it to your particular way of shooting. The built-in OLED viewfinder is a real bonus, providing a bright, clear view, and having a hotshoe and input for an external microphone both add to the flexibility of the system. Overall, the NEX-7 is a very interesting camera due to its high specification, and it should win over some purely because of that.
Highest specification mirrorless camera
The NEX-7 is an exciting product that gives manual controls, dials, and buttons, on the camera. These are physical, real buttons, that you can press and feel. Even more than this they are customisable to give you the control you want. Without doubt this is the highest specification mirrorless camera available yet.
