Very good sensor, fast auto focus
Overall, our main criticism of the Olympus OM-D E-M1 lies not with its performance or feature-set, but with its price. £1299 / $1399 body-only is a lot to pay for a compact system camera these days. Sturdy, weather-resistant body with lovely retro styling, Excellent image quality
In most respects the E-M1 does a good job bridging the gap between a traditional DSLR and a Micro Four Thirds camera. Its controls and customizability may overwhelm less hands-on users, but those who don't mind tinkering will love its flexibility. The improved autofocus tracking and performance with original Four Thirds lenses adds to the appeal of a camera with blazingly fast AF acquisition speeds with its native lenses.
Superb electronic viewfinder, Responsive AF system
The Olympus E-M1 delivers the goods across the board, with an impressive specification, fantastic build quality and a level of performance to match or better almost any CSC on the market. All of which combines to make to E-M1 not only one of the best CSCs currently available, but one of the best cameras of any type on the market today.

In-camera processing options like HDR and colour control are very effective
Even though it is a serious camera for enthusiast photographers, the OM-D E-M1 nevertheless brings a lot of fun to the imaging experience. Whether you enjoy using art filters or crave the fast burst speeds, the E-M1 is up to the challenge. The icing on the cake is that it produces great-looking photos.
However, the size and weight advantages of an interchangeable lens camera compared to an SLR are not really the case with the OM-D E-M1, especially when combined with the 12-40mm lens.
Images also looked extremely sharp
Owners of Olympus OM-D EM-5 bodies will rightly see the E-M1 as a worthwhile upgrade option and/or extension to their existing kit - provided they are happy about its higher price tag. The new camera has just enough improvements entice many stills photographers, although not photographers who are more video orientated.
The added support for Four Thirds lenses in the AF system will make the E-M1 attractive to owners of Olympus's older DSLR cameras.
As with all new technology.. there are always some glitches
As far as picture quality (the lens does work with the exception of the two things mentioned) I have been very happy. I do feel like adding a few steps of sharpness helps the images (custom picture settings are available for user to define), but I am wondering now if that may also be the lens issue.
Excellent image quality, straight-forward handling and quick performance
So while the Nikon D5300 doesn't add that many new features to the year-old D5200, what it does add makes it a unique product at the mid-range price-point, offering something genuinely different to the likes of the Canon EOS 650D, Pentax K-5 II and the Sony A65. The combination of a free-angle screen, great video mode, high-quality stills and new connectivity options mean that the Nikon D5300 is a worthy winner of our Highly Recommended award.
1080p60 HD video mode, Excellent image quality
The Nikon D5300 is what's often referred to in the technology world as an 'evolutionary' upgrade. Nikon has abandoned the D5200's optical low pass filter, which might have been considered revolutonary a year ago, but now looks, to borrow a fashion industry term, 'on trend'. That's not to say it's frivolous or unwarranted, given that it improves the D5300's image quality with no apparent drawbacks (Moire wasn't an issue in any of my test shots) it's absolutely the right move.
Built-in Wi-fi addition, Good build quality
Although the Nikon D5300 certainly isn't perfect, with the lack of a touchscreen and a high price-tag at launch two noticeable issues, it's among best DSLRs on the market and is certainly worthy of consideration if you're in the market for an upgrade from your first DSLR, CSC or advanced compact.
Built in Wi-Fi and GPS, Improved ISO performance
The Nikon D5300 takes the tried and tested Nikon D5x00 series and updates it with a new more compact body, upgrading the screen in the process to a larger 3.2inch version and adding built in Wi-Fi and GPS into the mix. Along with this the 24 megapixel sensor now features no optical low pass filter, which will give improved image quality when shooting with high quality lenses, and we would recommend using prime lenses to get the best out of the camera.
Image quality is unsurprisingly excellent
Ultimately the E-P5 joins the E-M5 as a fantastic compact system camera, albeit again a rather pricey one. It's different enough to its older sibling to warrant careful consideration - smaller, lighter, in some ways more flexible, and with some genuinely useful extra features - so much so that we can recommend the new Olympus E-P5 just as highly as our favourite compact system camera of 2012.
Beautifully-styled and built, with lots of external controls
The E-P5 is the most substantial re-working of the original PEN model, and it's the most impressive yet. It produces the same excellent image quality as the E-M5 and has a proper two-dial control system. This, combined with a better touch screen and arguably the prettiest PEN body, make it a more attractive and more complete camera than the series has seen before.
Excellent image quality, Excellent colour reproduction
The Olympus PEN E-P5 sits at the top of the Olympus PEN range and is the desirable premium mirrorless camera, while lacking weather sealing of the OM-D, the additional features and high IQ from the OM-D should make the E-P5 top of the list for a mirrorless camera. The VF-4 EVF (electronic viewfinder) with a high resolution, large view, and rapid refresh is an excellent bit of kit and well worth adding to the E-P5, making it a real pleasure to shoot with.
Super-fast autofocus, responsive touchscreen
Substance and style meld into one excellent camera. If you're after a compact system camera without a built-in viewfinder then the E-P5 is as good as they come. If a viewfinder is essential then the VF-4 accessory is great, but it might make better financial sense to buy an OM-D E-M5 instead.
Attractive retro design, Efficient and intuitive controls
All the staffers who had a chance to try out the E-P5 loved it, and we were sad to see it leave our hands. It's nicely designed, has a ton of features, and produces really nice images. The noise filter is a bit aggressive that results in less-than-sharp images, but this is easily fixable by adjusting the settings to your liking. The E-P5 is a camera that will do really well in any number of shooting situations, as long as you can handle the price tag.
Delivers excellent image quality
Ultimately, we prefer the X-A1 to the X-M1, as it delivers the same handling, features and performance, and, crucially, very similar image quality at a lower price. This is turn mitigates some of the issues that we had with the X-M1, principally concerning the lack of a viewfinder, so much so that we'd recommend that you save your cash and choose the X-A1 rather than the X-Trans, X-M1 version.
Most affordable Fuji CSC, Natural, vibrant images, Tilting LCD
Most photographers will tell you that image quality is their biggest consideration when selecting a camera, but the build and functionality of the camera are also key factors along with the price. Many manufacturers reduce the functionality and build quality of their more entry-level cameras in order to keep cost down, but Fuji is in the unusual position of being able to achieve the same thing while keeping these two elements the same.
Impressive performance, Outstanding detail and ISO performance
The Fujifilm X-A1 delivers an excellent standard of image quality, is an attractively designed camera and has a strong level of performance. While the lenses in the X series might not be the cheapest on the market, the X-A1 is well worthy of consideration in the entry-level CSC market.
Very good value for money, Excellent noise performance
The 16-50mm OIS kit lens, despite being a kit lens, delivers excellent image quality with a useful wide-angle to telephoto zoom range and includes a good sized lens hood. The combination of this lens and the compact body makes for a compelling package, with the added bonus of a good 3inch tilting screen and built in Wi-Fi connectivity.
Entry-level looks lavish and feels flimsy
When we reviewed the X-M1, we concluded that it was a camera with an excellent sensor in a chintzy body. The X-A1 keeps the same cheap suit, drops in a marginally inferior sensor, and charges you $200 less. Is that a good thing? It depends on what you're shopping for.
Very good camera
I have not used a DSLR before and was in the market to get a camera that is comparable to SLR. My wife wanted something that is not too big to carry around. My previous camera was a Canon S90, which is good, but I wanted something better than that. Picture quality in NEX 5T is very good, it is easy to handle like a point and shoot. I read some complaints about Sony's confusing menu, but I didn't have any problems with it.
CMOS image sensor helps with low light results
If you're someone who purchased last year's Sony NEX-5R ILC model, you aren't going to want to upgrade the recently released NEX-5T, as the two cameras very similar. The NEX-5T introduces NEC wireless capabilities to this family of ILC models, but otherwise the 5R and 5T are basically the same camera. That doesn't mean the Sony NEX-5T isn't a great camera.
Excellent all-round compact system camera
Ultimately the new Sony NEX-5T is once again a likable and easy to recommend compact system camera which literally feels better balanced with the 16-50mm lens. Still Highly Recommended then, but we'd expect to see next year's inevitable update make some real strides forward.
Comfortable to hold, Extremely compact with 16-50mm lens
The Sony NEX-5T is one of the more compact mirrorless cameras available, particularly considering it has an APS-C CMOS sensor. For a smaller mirrorless camera you would have normally had to look at the smaller sensor Nikon 1 series, however there is now the option of the Panasonic Lumix GM1 with Micro Four Thirds sensor, and generally smaller Micro Four Thirds lenses.
Superior stills and videos, Advanced Hybrid AF, Built-in Wi-Fi/NFC
It's easy recommending the Sony NEX-5T. It grabs images that are this close to Fujifilm CSCs using the X-Trans CMOS sensor. Since Sony supplies chips for practically everyone, they could even be the same imaging device but we slightly prefer the photos of the X-M1, which are just a bit sharper thanks to the Fujifilm glass. Where Sony beats Fujifilm - and practically everyone else - is its 60p videos that seem to jump off the screen.
Solid image quality and low light performance
All in all, if you're an existing NEX-5R user, we see absolutely no reason for you to make that upgrade. However, the NEX-5T will make a compelling option for someone looking to make an upgrade from a compact camera, with its combination of good size and image quality, coupled with those nifty PlayMemories apps. But be warned, if you're a fan of touchscreen operation, I'm afraid the 5T isn't going to cut it.
Outstanding image quality, excellent performance, deep feature-set and great design
If you haven't guessed already, we rather like the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7! Dislikes are minimal. There's a very slight lag when switching from the LCD screen to the electronic viewfinder, it's easy to accidentally set the AF point via the touchscreen, there aren't enough sharing features in the wi-fi implementation, there's no external mic connection and battery life is merely acceptable rather than great.
Relatively compact body with lots of customisable controls
Ultimately there's a great deal to like about the GX7 and I very much enjoyed using it during my test period. As such it's a camera I can easily Recommended to anyone who wants a compact but powerful system camera, but the issues mentioned earlier rule out our top rating. I certainly can't say (as others have) that this is the best mirrorless camera, the best Micro Four Thirds camera or even the best Lumix G camera.
Photos have pleasing color and sharpness, with little detail smudging
The Panasonic GX7 is a full-featured mirrorless camera that offers very good photo and video quality, a highly customizable interface, plenty of useful features, and robust performance. It's marred by a so-so viewfinder, lack of in-camera Raw conversion, and a disappointing in-body IS system.
Built-in electronic viewfinder, decent build quality
In true Panasonic fashion the GX7 ticks plenty of boxes. But beyond feeling solely functional, this Lumix has soul too; it successfully flirts with the current design trends and pulls it off. It feels luxury, it feels exciting and it definitely feels worthy of the hype. There are shortcomings as we've detailed, including so-so battery life, but considering the feature set and the price-point the Lumix GX7 is up there among the compact system camera greats.
Excellent - this camera should cost more
If you're considering an NEX or u43 kit, keep in mind that neither those nor the X-M1 are pocketable. You'll likely carry those cameras in a bag. If you want something truly pocketable, you're probably better off looking at an RX100. So if you'll be using a bag anyways, I would recommend the X-M1 over the NEX or any of the smaller u43 cameras.
Smaller, lighter and significantly cheaper
Ultimately, while we actually preferred the X-E1 to its big brother, the X-Pro1, the same can't be said about the X-M1, despite it being significantly cheaper and shipping with a good kit lens. The lack of a viewfinder is the main problem - for us, it just feels wrong to pick-up an X-series camera and not be able to hold it up to your eye.
Excellent high ISO noise performance
The Fujifilm X-M1 is an interesting development in the X-series and provides the opportunity for those who hanker after the style and performance of the X-E1, but at a more affordable price. With the concurrent launch of a quality kit lens, a telephoto zoom coming later in 2013, and the promise of more affordable XC lenses to come, it's clearly a product the company is committed to.
Solid build quality, despite composite construction
The X-M1 is Fujifilm's entry-level mirrorless camera with its unique X-Trans sensor. While it lacks the build quality and EVF of the more expensive X-E1, it adds a sharper, tilting LCD and Wi-Fi. The X-M1 is capable of taking incredibly sharp photos with very little noise. Performance is very good, although AF speeds are not as quick as the best-in-class mirrorless cameras.The camera is missing a few other handy features too, like an electronic level and remote control via Wi-Fi.
Tilting screen, Small size, Large APS-C sensor
When it comes to shopping for a camera like this, although image quality is good, appearance is still very important. If you're willing to part with a large chunk of change in return for something that looks beautiful but still delivers in the image quality department, then you'll no doubt be pleased with the Fuji X-M1.
If, however, you're looking for your first camera in the interchangeable lens category, and you're on a budget, this wouldn't be our first recommendation.
Low noise, Excellent colour, 3 inch tilting screen
The X-Pro1 and X-E1 with manual control dials, and built in viewfinders were a joy to use due to classic styling and quick photographic control. The Fujifilm X-M1 on the other hand no longer features as many external controls, and with the 16-50mm OIS lens aperture and shutter speed is controlled by the two control wheels. However, the additional of a 3inch tilting screen and built in Wi-Fi, along with a more compact body helps make up for this.
Great image quality is super-sharp
The X-M1 is new ground for Fujifilm: it's a camera targeted towards the masses, yet it maintains a decent level of its all-important pro-spec look and feel. Imperfections there may be, and it can feel a little more B-movie than Hollywood at times, but the X-M1 will score a cult-movie-like following for all its positives. A compact system camera that really shouldn't be overlooked, there's more to it than meets the eye.
Great Little Camera
The Panasonic ZS30 is compact enough to carry easily, has an incredably long, compact Leica lens, more than enough low light capability for most people - unless you are a pixel peeping nerd or a pro who has to make a living off of his/her talent as a photographer, and it has more neat features that most people will ever use. Is it a DSLR? NO. Is it a darned good compact camera? Yes. Is it an excellent, full-featured, long lens travel camera? Absolutely, yes!
Touchscreen interface, built-in wi-fi connectivity and GPS
While last years' Lumix DMC-TZ30 / ZS25 model was more of a modest upgrade rather than a radical departure from what had gone before, 2013's DMC-TZ40 / ZS30 feels like a much more significant step forward for Panasonic's wildly popular travel-zoom range. The TZ40 is veritably stuffed to the gills with cutting-edge features, while the combination of a 20x zoom, effective stabilisation system and good image quality is hard to resist.
1080p video with zooming, stereo sound and continuous AF
Impressive, but so far so similar to much of the competition. Where the TZ40 / ZS30 really differs from its rivals though is the implementations of various technologies. Amazingly it remains the only pocket super-zoom of its peer group to employ a touchscreen which genuinely enhances control and selective focusing. Of the models with GPS, the TZ40 / ZS30 is the only one with a built-in landmark database and mapping facilities.
Impressive zoom for such a compact body
The Panasonic Lumix TZ40 arrives at the same retail price as the TZ30 at launch. When you consider the added functionality - namely the connectivity features - as well as the all-round improvements to the specification, you have to say that then TZ40 is an attractive proposition.
On the whole the additions to the feature-set are successful and welcome, while the more general improvements are also positive.
Good picture quality, Built-in Wi-Fi and GPS
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ40 has all the features needed to justify its travel zoom tag. It offers ample optical zoom, great for landscapes and distance objects, as well as built-in Wi-Fi and GPS, all in a pocketable body. It's a little on the expensive side, so some of the cheaper options may be more appealing, but the features and image quality certainly make it worth the money.
Solid build, 18 megapixel stills
Looking for one simple-to-use pocket camera with a creatively versatile zoom reach that will pretty much do it all? In offering a higher pixel count than its predecessor and newly adding Wi-Fi connectivity, the 18 megapixel, 20x optical zoom TZ40 is one of the more accomplished jack of all trades.
While in some ways its additions feel like a way of playing catch up with the rest of the 'travel zoom' market, the result is a snapshot camera that ends up a cut above.
A generational camera
The x100S has fine enough image quality and speed, in such a reasonably sized package, that the next generation of camera doesn't appeal to me. The x200S could have twice the resolution and twice the speed and I simply wouldn't care. I'm not suggesting that the x100S is the pinnacle of fixed lens digital cameras. But I am saying that Fuji has achieved such a balance of features and performance with the x100S that I can't reasonably see myself upgrading or switching for the foreseeable future.
Capable of excellent performance
While we could certainly dock the X100S for a lack of newbie-friendly features, this is still a $1,299.99 fixed-lens camera; there's probably not many beginners willing to shell out that kind of money for a camera lacking the flexibility of a system camera. Those in this part of the market probably know their way around a RAW converter or two, and are willing to suffer a bit for their art. Especially for street photographers who don't want to shell out for a Leica, the X100S is a fine choice.
Compelling mix of intuitive handling, impeccable image quality
There's no denying that £1099 / $1299 is a lot of money to pay for a compact camera with a fixed lens, but the Fujifilm X100S offers so many improvements that if you ever found yourself looking longingly at its predecessor, there's very little reason not to take a much, much closer look at this new version. Quite simply the new Fujifilm X100S is one of the best cameras that we've ever reviewed and joins its illustrious predecessor as a worthy winner of our coveted Essential! award.
Fast Hybrid AF with manual focus aids, Hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder.
The Fujifilm X100S builds on the success of its predecessor, the X100, with a new sensor, faster, more accurate focusing and a raft of other improvements. Fujifilm has concentrated on improving what needed it and fixing (most of) what was broken, while leaving what what best and most loved well alone - namely the X100's retro styling, composition and traditional controls.
Detail-rich images, Bright lens
By taking some of the best elements of the Fuji X-Pro1, such as the sensor design and Quick Menu, Fuji has produced a worthy update to the X100, and many owners of this camera will feel sorely tempted by the X100S. The improved handling and image quality makes it a very desirable step up.
Excellent resolution and detail in photos
The Fujifilm X100s improves quite dramatically over the Fujifilm X100, with a new 16 megapixel sensor that delivers excellent noise performance and detail in photos. The X100s gives the same familiar controls as the original X100 as well as a higher resolution electronic viewfinder, that when combined with the hybrid optical viewfinder, makes this camera a unique proposition.
Sony made a revolutionary camera
This is by far the best camera I have ever owned. Just in case you got here by accident, this is the smallest and lightest full frame changeable lens digital camera ever made. Full Frame just means that all the lenses out there for 35mm film cameras will look the same on this sensor. The pictures are amazing, the autofocus is lightning fast, and everything just feels like it should. It makes taking pictures very easy and fun.
Great quality rivals DSLRs of similar resolution
The Alpha A7 and A7r are a wake-up call for the photographic industry, especially to Canon and Nikon. Here are two cameras which not only match or outperform top-selling DSLRs in many respects, but which also can use their lenses, in some cases with minimal compromise on handling. If Canon and especially Nikon aren't careful, they could find themselves becoming lens manufacturers with a niche body business in pro sports photography.
Affordable, small size, full-frame image quality is great with prime lens attached
The Alpha A7 is a camera out there all on its own. It doesn't feel quite comparable to a full-frame DSLR, but we mean that as a positive. It's a different system, with a different ethos and, combined with the right gear, it'll bring you one thing that's the same as any other system worth its salt: glorious full-frame pictures.
Produce the best quality images
If you're a photo junky who values a low-profile, compact setup, you should run to get this camera. Your only other options for compact full-frame bodies are the Leica M, which is an unworldly $8000, or the Sony RX1, which is great but has a fixed lens. Sure there are trade-offs with the A7 series like poor lens selection and battery life, but those problems just fade away as you bask in the glory of the full-frame system.
