As with all new technology.. there are always some glitches
As far as picture quality (the lens does work with the exception of the two things mentioned) I have been very happy. I do feel like adding a few steps of sharpness helps the images (custom picture settings are available for user to define), but I am wondering now if that may also be the lens issue.
Excellent image quality, straight-forward handling and quick performance
So while the Nikon D5300 doesn't add that many new features to the year-old D5200, what it does add makes it a unique product at the mid-range price-point, offering something genuinely different to the likes of the Canon EOS 650D, Pentax K-5 II and the Sony A65. The combination of a free-angle screen, great video mode, high-quality stills and new connectivity options mean that the Nikon D5300 is a worthy winner of our Highly Recommended award.
1080p60 HD video mode, Excellent image quality
The Nikon D5300 is what's often referred to in the technology world as an 'evolutionary' upgrade. Nikon has abandoned the D5200's optical low pass filter, which might have been considered revolutonary a year ago, but now looks, to borrow a fashion industry term, 'on trend'. That's not to say it's frivolous or unwarranted, given that it improves the D5300's image quality with no apparent drawbacks (Moire wasn't an issue in any of my test shots) it's absolutely the right move.
Built-in Wi-fi addition, Good build quality
Although the Nikon D5300 certainly isn't perfect, with the lack of a touchscreen and a high price-tag at launch two noticeable issues, it's among best DSLRs on the market and is certainly worthy of consideration if you're in the market for an upgrade from your first DSLR, CSC or advanced compact.
Built in Wi-Fi and GPS, Improved ISO performance
The Nikon D5300 takes the tried and tested Nikon D5x00 series and updates it with a new more compact body, upgrading the screen in the process to a larger 3.2inch version and adding built in Wi-Fi and GPS into the mix. Along with this the 24 megapixel sensor now features no optical low pass filter, which will give improved image quality when shooting with high quality lenses, and we would recommend using prime lenses to get the best out of the camera.
Delivers great performance, weather-resistant build quality
We really can't think of anything bad to say about the new Pentax K-3, other than it deserves a better lens than either the 18-55 or 18-135mm kit lenses to realise its true potential. Pentax may not be as big or have the kudos of Nikon and Canon, but in the new K-3, they definitely have a fantastic semi-pro DSLR camera that's worthy of our highest Essential! award.
Superb clarity in image quality with 24MP sensor
Pentax have been consistently producing outstanding DSLRs, well specified and rugged. The K-3 continues that tradition, but honing areas that needed attention such as the AF tracking system and the video capability. The increased resolution and the clean images it produces all set off a well-rounded package that comes very close indeed to challenging very much more expensive kit.
Better handling and importantly faster performance than its predecessor
The new Fujifilm X-E2 offers more features, better handling and importantly faster performance than its predecessor, which we already loved, making it our favourite X-series camera and one of the best compact system cameras around. Fujifilm have clearly listened to their users and produced a camera that may look very much like the original X-E1, but which improves on it in virtually all ways.
Impressive noise performance, Great build quality and handling
The Fujifilm X-E2 improves on the X-E1 and addresses a number of the issues we found with the original camera, including accidentally knocking the exposure compensation dial, this hasn't happened on this new model, as well as adding a larger higher resolution screen. Focus speeds and continuous shooting speed has also been improved with the camera feeling extremely responsive in use.
Sony made a revolutionary camera
This is by far the best camera I have ever owned. Just in case you got here by accident, this is the smallest and lightest full frame changeable lens digital camera ever made. Full Frame just means that all the lenses out there for 35mm film cameras will look the same on this sensor. The pictures are amazing, the autofocus is lightning fast, and everything just feels like it should. It makes taking pictures very easy and fun.
Great quality rivals DSLRs of similar resolution
The Alpha A7 and A7r are a wake-up call for the photographic industry, especially to Canon and Nikon. Here are two cameras which not only match or outperform top-selling DSLRs in many respects, but which also can use their lenses, in some cases with minimal compromise on handling. If Canon and especially Nikon aren't careful, they could find themselves becoming lens manufacturers with a niche body business in pro sports photography.
Affordable, small size, full-frame image quality is great with prime lens attached
The Alpha A7 is a camera out there all on its own. It doesn't feel quite comparable to a full-frame DSLR, but we mean that as a positive. It's a different system, with a different ethos and, combined with the right gear, it'll bring you one thing that's the same as any other system worth its salt: glorious full-frame pictures.
Produce the best quality images
If you're a photo junky who values a low-profile, compact setup, you should run to get this camera. Your only other options for compact full-frame bodies are the Leica M, which is an unworldly $8000, or the Sony RX1, which is great but has a fixed lens. Sure there are trade-offs with the A7 series like poor lens selection and battery life, but those problems just fade away as you bask in the glory of the full-frame system.
A 'Fixed' D600 but a Failed Nikon Brand
I purchased the Nikon D600 when it first came out and THANKFULLY returned it when the dust/oil began to pop up on the sensor. I feel horrible for anyone that kept the D600 and now has a faulty camera out of warranty that has (essentially) been decommissioned from Nikon as a faulty product they don't want to fix. Thus the D610: a Nikon D600 with no dust and oil issues.
Great, responsive and versatile tool
That the D610 is lighter than any other Nikon FX digital SLR camera is a real boon to anyone planning to use it for extended periods of time, though be prepared that it's still quite a handful and noticeably heavier than the cheapest auto focus SLRs of the film era (then again, it's a much higher specified model than any of those). The Nikon D610's mirror is surprisingly quiet for a full-frame SLR camera and in normal use it produces only minimal viewfinder blackout.
High build quality, Excellent quality images
While the Nikon D610 is an excellent camera that's capable of recording plenty of detail in images with rich tones, good exposure and pleasant colours it is considerably more expensive the Canon 6D which can be bought for around $1899/£1475.
Those photographers who aren't tied to Nikon by a stash of lenses may feel tempted to invest in the Canon camera instead.
Excellent image quality, Excellent noise performance
The Nikon D610, like the D600 before, is a full-frame 24.3 megapixel camera with excellent image quality and performance. It offers excellent noise performance, excellent image quality with good detail even as the ISO setting increases, and puts it all into a rugged weather sealed body with a great 3.2inch screen. The camera offers advanced Full HD video recording with both microphone and headphone sockets, and video benefits from the full frame sensor in low-light situations.
High quality electronic viewfinder, Classic camera styling
The Olympus Stylus 1, by using the styling of the Olympus OM-D series, which itself was styled on the old and classic Olympus OM SLR series, has not only brought about a stylish compact camera, but it's also brought about a genuinely useful and somewhat unique digital camera.
Ability to continuously auto-focus during movie recording
In summary the new 650D / Rebel T4i is the most complicated yet friendly mid-range Canon DSLR yet, truly a camera that you can grow into as your photography skills develop. It only misses out on our highest Essential award because of the still slow Live View auto-focusing and a small price increase over the 600D, but is more than deserving of our still-coveted Highly Recommended award.
High image quality with good balance between detail and noise reduction in JPEG output

Image quality and high ISO performance
Although it has an 18 million pixel sensor, Canon's EOS 650D/Rebel T4i doesn't use the same CMOS device as other cameras in Canon's range. It uses a new Hybrid CMOS sensor that is designed to facilitate a combined phase detection and contrast detection autofocus system that operates during video recording and when Live View is activated.
Touch-screen adds to user experience
The Canon EOS 650D is the first mid-range DSLR to offers touch-screen functionality and is all the better for it. While Canon has implemented the technology well, it hasn't made it obligatory to the camera's general operation. Autofocus performance has seen a fairly major improvement too, with the While other changes are more incremental they do make the EOS 650D a more enjoyable camera to use than its predecessor.
Excellent image quality, Excellent colour reproduction
Video is improved thanks to stereo sound and continuous AF, although this is still generally quite slow compared to mirrorless cameras, and the noise of the lens focussing is easily picked up by the internal microphones. In fact, the manual recommends the use of an external microphone if this is something you want to avoid.
Produces great quality shots
The 650D's improved autofocus system (as per the 60D) is a big step forward and the HD movie mode makes best use of the new touchscreen technology. The camera's 18-megapixel sensor produces great quality shots direct from camera, but the limitations at higher ISO settings and small buffer when shooting raw files in burst mode are sticking points.
Very fast in shot-to-shot performance and burst mode
Canon's EOS 650D is for users who want fast speed out of an entry-level digital SLR camera. It can pump out photos to the tune of five frames per second, making it perfect for budding sports and action photographers who don't want to spend more for an enthusiast-level body. It's an easy camera to use and get the hang of and Canon has included a touchscreen so that you can have more choice as to how you control the camera's settings.
Dedicated video switch
The Canon EOS 650D comes as an update to the 600D, which was announced early last year. The highlight of the 650D is its touchscreen display which makes it the first shooter in the dSLR segment to sport such a feature. This new 18-megapixel entry-level dSLR boasts better shooting performance and enhanced video controls with a duo of STM lenses. According to a Canon representative, the 600D will still be sold alongside the 650D.
Continuous AF in video
The Canon EOS 650D is packed with cool features, including a multi-touch touchscreen, full high-definition video with improved video controls and a faster auto-focus with better noise performance. It's a serious package for new SLR users -- but Micro Four Thirds and other lens-swapping cameras offer similar features for less money.
Advanced autofocus system handles moving subjects beautifully
When we first saw the Canon 1D X way back in the fall of 2011, it became immediately clear that Canon was looking to produce a camera that would be right at home in the bags of world-class photographers and videographers alike.
Even amongst pure still photographers, the Canon 1D X's dove-tailing of the sports-centric 1D Mark IV and the studio-centric 1Ds Mark III lines seemed to be an ambitious move designed to capture the majority of the pro market with a single professional body.
Performs exceptionally well in low-light situations
At around £5,300 for the body-only the Canon EOS-1D X doesn't come cheap, but if you're a professional photographer who makes a living from photography then the 1D X is one of the best tools that money can buy. Put simply the Canon EOS-1D X is remarkable camera and we have no hesitation in saying it's the best Canon DSLR we've ever used.
Exceptional high ISO performance, Excellent image quality
If you're looking for the ultimate in speed, image quality, and performance, as well as exceptional low light performance then the Canon EOS 1D X certainly delivers in abundance. With extremely high ISO settings available it's possible to shoot in low light situations hand-held where you would normally have to setup a tripod and timer, as long as you don't mind using these higher ISO settings.
Super fast burst rate, incredible battery life
Fast, tough, long-lasting and able to produce exceptional images. Some other full-frame models outperform in the resolution stakes, and Canon's lost its formerly enviable "movie king" hat, but otherwise the 1D X is as good as professional full-frame DSLR cameras get.
Fast and accurate focusing, high burst speeds and a generous buffer capacity
Arguably, the EOS 1D X is Canon's most versatile camera to date and there are few situations in which it won't shine. Sports and wildlife photographers will relish the new AF system, high burst speeds and clean films at high sensitivity settings. (With a caveat to photographers who use extender lenses, as explained above.)
Recorded spectacular video
There's no question the Canon 1D X is capable of recording excellent video images, but that's what you should expect from a camera that costs in excess of 6000 dollars. The multiple compression options (ALL-I or IPB), as well as the numerous record modes and extensive manual video controls offer everything the professional videographer needs to capture high-quality video. But the camera isn't marketed to video users as much as, say, the Canon 5D Mark III or the Panasonic GH3.
Excellent low-light, High ISO performance
The Canon 1D X is certainly an exciting new addition to the Canon line-up. It raises the bar in a number of areas such as speed and customisability. I also have high hopes that the image quality and low-light performance will live up to the hype.

Snappy performance when shooting with the viewfinder
If you're looking for an entry-level digital SLR that's very easy to use, look no further than the Nikon D3200. It takes nice-looking photos (just keep an eye on the exposure), offers a feature set that'll please consumers (and maybe a few enthusiasts), and it's small and light enough to carry around every day.
Highest-resolution APS-C DX format Nikon DSLR,
With its huge 24 megapixel sensor, the entry-level D3200 instantly becomes the highest-resolution APS-C DX format Nikon DSLR, and it offers more pixels than any competing manufacturer too. Compared to the 18-month-old D3100, Nikon has managed to simultaneously increase the pixel count by a massive 10 megapixels and yet still maintain similar quality at higher sensitivity settings, which is no mean feat.
24 Megapixel CMOS sensor
With its predecessor, the D3100, Nikon pushed both the price and feature set of its entry-level DSLR a notch above what was available from the competition, most notably Canon. The D3200 increases both of thoses gaps, costing around forty percent more than Canon's EOS T3 / 1100D, but offering so much more that its closest rival is really the upper entry-level T2i / 550D.
Well-balanced noise reduction at higher sensitivities, decent noise levels
All in all the Nikon D3200 is a through and through solid entry-level camera that offers good image quality, decent performance and intuitive operation. However, compared to some of the competition it does lack in the feature and innovation department and if you like playing with the latest digital helpers and gimmicks there better options available in the Nikon's price bracket.
Excellent guide mode, 24MP sensor, Full HD video
A camera with 24 million pixels at the entry level is pretty extraordinary, and it's pleasing to note that the extra pixels don't come at the cost of a reduction in image quality.
For beginners looking to get a bit more creative with their photography, Nikon's innovative Guide Mode, brought over from the 3100, is a real boon, while of course the Nikon D3200 includes options for those wanting to explore manual and semi-manual exposure modes further down the line.
Excellent image quality
The Nikon D3200 is a likeable entry-level DSLR that offers with all the basic functionality first-time DSLR buyers will need, all neatly wrapped up in a relatively small and easy-to-use package. Our only concern is that, at around £550, the D3200 does face some pretty stiff competition from slightly older but more strongly featured DSLRs such as the Nikon D5100 and Canon 600D, both of which offer a bit more room to grow your skills with.
Excellent image quality
The D3200 is like a souped-up D3100 thanks to its excellent 24-megapixel sensor. Images are great, but the high asking price and lesser performance than (cheaper) middleweight DSLRs may confuse prospective buyers. The D3200 does usher in a new level of image quality to the entry-level market, but it's not without a few shortcomings.
Good flash exposure at the rated distance at wide-angle
The Panasonic GX1's built-in flash has a Guide Number rating of 7.6 meters (24.9 feet) at ISO 160. With the 14-42mm kit lens, that translates to a range of 7.1 feet at f/3.5, or 4.5 feet at f/5.6. The GX1 doesn't offer an ISO 100 setting, but since most cameras don't provide an ISO 160 guide number, it's worth noting that its flash offers a strength equivalent to 6 meters at ISO 100.
Fast continuous shooting
At 16 megapixels, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1 features the highest resolution of any Micro Four Thirds camera. It has some nice features that should appeal to enthusiasts, but it doesn't do well at the higher ISO settings and is bundled with a lens that can't keep up with the camera.
Good images and color
Shutter lag and autofocus acquisition times are better than the GF1 (and towards the top of the heap with regard to latest generation cameras), and the new camera can record full HD 1080 video with stereo sound. ISO sensitivity now ranges up to 12800; resolution is up to 16 megapixels. Power up and shot-to-shot times are a bit slower than the GF1 but still among the quickest in the class; the continuous high-speed shooting rate is much improved.
Solid rangefinder-style body is easy to hold, comes in two colors
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1 is an interchangeable lens camera that brings the design of the beloved DMC-GF1 back into the Panasonic lineup. It has a solid, rangefinder-style body, and it comes in your choice of black and silver. While there have been several minor changes to the design of the GX1 (mostly button rearrangement), one especially nice addition is a large grip for your right hand. The DMC-GX1 supports the Micro Four Thirds lens mount, with a growing collection of lenses available.
Highest resolution Micro Four Thirds sensor
With the GX1, Panasonic has revived much of the handling experience of the GF1 while incorporating the specification updates that have populated the G-series lineup in the years since its release. Fast AF, an efficient touchscreen implementation - most notably Touch AF and the Q.Menu - improved screen visibility, a vastly improved optional EVF and no fewer than four Fn buttons, all of which have access to the same list of parameters.
