As with all new technology.. there are always some glitches
As far as picture quality (the lens does work with the exception of the two things mentioned) I have been very happy. I do feel like adding a few steps of sharpness helps the images (custom picture settings are available for user to define), but I am wondering now if that may also be the lens issue.
Excellent image quality, straight-forward handling and quick performance
So while the Nikon D5300 doesn't add that many new features to the year-old D5200, what it does add makes it a unique product at the mid-range price-point, offering something genuinely different to the likes of the Canon EOS 650D, Pentax K-5 II and the Sony A65. The combination of a free-angle screen, great video mode, high-quality stills and new connectivity options mean that the Nikon D5300 is a worthy winner of our Highly Recommended award.
1080p60 HD video mode, Excellent image quality
The Nikon D5300 is what's often referred to in the technology world as an 'evolutionary' upgrade. Nikon has abandoned the D5200's optical low pass filter, which might have been considered revolutonary a year ago, but now looks, to borrow a fashion industry term, 'on trend'. That's not to say it's frivolous or unwarranted, given that it improves the D5300's image quality with no apparent drawbacks (Moire wasn't an issue in any of my test shots) it's absolutely the right move.
Built-in Wi-fi addition, Good build quality
Although the Nikon D5300 certainly isn't perfect, with the lack of a touchscreen and a high price-tag at launch two noticeable issues, it's among best DSLRs on the market and is certainly worthy of consideration if you're in the market for an upgrade from your first DSLR, CSC or advanced compact.
Built in Wi-Fi and GPS, Improved ISO performance
The Nikon D5300 takes the tried and tested Nikon D5x00 series and updates it with a new more compact body, upgrading the screen in the process to a larger 3.2inch version and adding built in Wi-Fi and GPS into the mix. Along with this the 24 megapixel sensor now features no optical low pass filter, which will give improved image quality when shooting with high quality lenses, and we would recommend using prime lenses to get the best out of the camera.
Impressive image quality, even at high ISO settings, Dust-proof, splash-proof design
With gorgeous images - even in low light, incredible speed, and a wealth of high-end features, the Olympus OM-D E-M1 is the best Micro Four Thirds camera that money can buy. It's an easy Editors' Choice award winner.

Sturdy, weather-resistant body with lovely retro styling, Excellent image quality
In most respects the E-M1 does a good job bridging the gap between a traditional DSLR and a Micro Four Thirds camera. Its controls and customizability may overwhelm less hands-on users, but those who don't mind tinkering will love its flexibility. The improved autofocus tracking and performance with original Four Thirds lenses adds to the appeal of a camera with blazingly fast AF acquisition speeds with its native lenses.
Superb electronic viewfinder, Responsive AF system
The Olympus E-M1 delivers the goods across the board, with an impressive specification, fantastic build quality and a level of performance to match or better almost any CSC on the market. All of which combines to make to E-M1 not only one of the best CSCs currently available, but one of the best cameras of any type on the market today.

In-camera processing options like HDR and colour control are very effective
Even though it is a serious camera for enthusiast photographers, the OM-D E-M1 nevertheless brings a lot of fun to the imaging experience. Whether you enjoy using art filters or crave the fast burst speeds, the E-M1 is up to the challenge. The icing on the cake is that it produces great-looking photos.
However, the size and weight advantages of an interchangeable lens camera compared to an SLR are not really the case with the OM-D E-M1, especially when combined with the 12-40mm lens.
Images also looked extremely sharp
Owners of Olympus OM-D EM-5 bodies will rightly see the E-M1 as a worthwhile upgrade option and/or extension to their existing kit - provided they are happy about its higher price tag. The new camera has just enough improvements entice many stills photographers, although not photographers who are more video orientated.
The added support for Four Thirds lenses in the AF system will make the E-M1 attractive to owners of Olympus's older DSLR cameras.
A jack-of-all-trades with the best amateur video available
This is the most significant DSLR Canon has introduced since the 7D. It's the first one I've reviewed without some major caveat. And that's unusual. Canon doesn't often make game-changing cameras. They do what they did with the 30D, T3i, T5i, and 6D: make incremental improvements and leave a lot on the table. That's not what happened here, and so much the better.
Good still image quality, Good ISO noise performance
Is the 70D an automatic "must have" for 60D owners? If they shoot a lot of video, almost certainly - in video performance alone the 70D really outclasses the 60D, in no small part due to the lack of continuous AF in the 60D to begin with. Primarily shoot stills but a lot of bursts for sports or wildlife photography? Maybe - those extra 2 fps are a fairly significant jump over the 60D. Looking for your first DSLR and want/expect to shoot a lot of video?
Excellent image quality
Indeed, until we see Dual-Pixel CMOS AF inevitably make its way across the EOS range, we'd recommend the new Canon EOS 70D as the APS-C camera to go for if you're currently considering a mid-range DSLR camera. It offers a winning blend of features, performance and image quality that is hard to beat, both by its EOS brothers and other manufacturers' offerings. The new EOS 70D marks a real step forward for both Canon and the venerable SLR camera.
Great image quality, high resolution and low noise
Many cameras involve some compromises in what you can take, but the 70D suffers from little if any of those limitations. It can quickly respond to a wide variety of situations, taking high quality stills, tracking fast action through the viewfinder, shooting high speed bursts and confidently refocusing for movies. These make the 70D one of the most capable all-round cameras I've tested, even if the star of the show is the continuous movie AF.
Great touchscreen performance
The Canon EOS 70D is a real step forward in the world of DSLR photography, and if you shoot a lot of video, or find yourself using live view image capture with any regularity, it's a great choice. But It's not without its faults, with a few bugs in the Creative Filter settings proving particularly disappointing, although on the whole it's an impressive bit of kit that will change the way DSLRs handle AF technology in the future.
Excellent colour, Excellent vari-angle 3inch touch screen
The new dual pixel AF feature noticeably improves focus during video and live view, as promised, this will be particularly impressive and useful for those who shoot with Canon lenses for video or live view use, although at the expense of battery life, which drops dramatically from the otherwise excellent 920 shots offered.
7fps burst at full resolution with decent buffer, great image quality
Great new technology, great image quality, and great in use - there are only a few nitpick shortcomings to the Canon EOS 70D. Otherwise it's as close to redefining the mid-level DSLR sector as we've seen in recent years. It sure does earn its stripes; this is the colonel of cameras and deservedly so.
Better handling and importantly faster performance than its predecessor
The new Fujifilm X-E2 offers more features, better handling and importantly faster performance than its predecessor, which we already loved, making it our favourite X-series camera and one of the best compact system cameras around. Fujifilm have clearly listened to their users and produced a camera that may look very much like the original X-E1, but which improves on it in virtually all ways.
Impressive noise performance, Great build quality and handling
The Fujifilm X-E2 improves on the X-E1 and addresses a number of the issues we found with the original camera, including accidentally knocking the exposure compensation dial, this hasn't happened on this new model, as well as adding a larger higher resolution screen. Focus speeds and continuous shooting speed has also been improved with the camera feeling extremely responsive in use.
Faster auto-focus and burst shooting speeds
The price of the Canon PowerShot G16 is an eye-watering £529.00 / $549.99, which makes it more expensive than the class-leading Sony Cyber-shot RX100, itself bested by the RX100 Mark II, albeit at an even higher price-point. Despite the improvements, we still feel that the RX100/RX100 II with its much larger sensor delivers even better results than the G16, making it our choice in the "pocketable compact camera for enthusiasts" sector of the market.
Built-in Wifi and GPS via a smartphone, 1080p60 HD video mode.
The G16 is an easy camera to underestimate, on the face of it, it doesn't seem like it has a lot to offer one year on from its predecessor and at first glance you'd probably guess that existing G15 owners would hold off for whatever the G17 might have to offer. But I think G15 owners will see it differently, and that means anyone else looking for an advanced compact as a DSLR understudy should probably think likewise and give the G16 some serious consideration.
Excellent build quality, Manual focus with focus peaking
The Canon Powershot G16 offers a number of improvements over the previous model, including a number of new and useful shooting modes including Handheld HDR, Star modes, and built in Wi-Fi for quicker sharing, although the lack of remote shooting will be disappointing to many.
Photos are impressive with excellent colour, detail and exposure, with numerous options to expand dynamic range.
Image quality is great, raw shooting option
The G16 may be starting to look a little dated, particularly when you compare it to something like Sony's sleek RX100, but that doesn't stop the Canon remaining a top-notch snapper all round. When something's right, it's just right - and the G16 largely represents that. It won't suit all photographers on account of its bulky size, but for those that it will, it'll be spot on.
The camera delivers image quality that's consistently good, certainly among the best in class.
Good photos and videos, Enhanced response (fps, focusing)
Although Canon has made some strides with the G16 - closing the spec gap with CSCs and DSLRs on paper - we can't give it our strongest recommendation. At $550 it's just too expensive for the level of quality it delivers. We suggest anyone looking for an enthusiast pocket zoom to take a serious look at the Sony RX100 II and spend the extra bucks ($749) or check out the less expensive RX100, which is the same price as the G16 but doesn't have Wi-Fi.
Impeccable build quality, Start-up has got much quicker
The Canon PowerShot G16 is a reassuring camera that does a good job. Its only real stand-out feature is improved responsiveness brought by the Digic 6 image processor. It'll be an ideal companion for users looking for a classic safe bet and who aren't tempted by originality or eye-catching innovations. This camera is certainly built to stand the test of time, but the G series also needs to move with the times, otherwise it risks being left behind.

The price of the S120 is an eye-watering £449.00 / $449.99, up £20 in the UK, which puts it on a price-par with the class-leading Sony Cyber-shot RX100, itself bested by the RX100 Mark II, albeit at an even higher price-point. Despite the improvements, we still feel that the RX100 with its much larger sensor delivers even better results than the S120, making it our choice in the "pocketable compact camera for enthusiasts" sector of the market.
One of smallest cameras with RAW & manual control
As it stands though the S120 can still be squeezed into most pockets which keeps it unique against most of its competition - indeed only the Lumix LF1 challenges it in this regard. And if it is a genuinely pocketable enthusiast-class compact you're after then you should be comparing the S120 very closely against the LF1 and also seeing what that extra 1cm of thickness gets you from the RX100 II.
Easy to take impressive star trail shots, Has built-in Wi-Fi
The Canon PowerShot S120 is a steady upgrade of last year's S110, with a slightly faster aperture, faster continuous shooting and a higher resolution screen. This might not be enough to tempt S110 owners to upgrade, but the star trail feature does offer something unique and the results we achieved during testing are quite impressive.
Small camera, plenty of control
With its handling improvements, brighter lens, 1080/60p video, and unquestionable pocketability, the S120 is a terrific camera either for DSLR owners looking for something svelte to slip into a pocket, or shutterbugs with no desire to lug a DSLR while on vacation.
Delivers great performance, weather-resistant build quality
We really can't think of anything bad to say about the new Pentax K-3, other than it deserves a better lens than either the 18-55 or 18-135mm kit lenses to realise its true potential. Pentax may not be as big or have the kudos of Nikon and Canon, but in the new K-3, they definitely have a fantastic semi-pro DSLR camera that's worthy of our highest Essential! award.
Superb clarity in image quality with 24MP sensor
Pentax have been consistently producing outstanding DSLRs, well specified and rugged. The K-3 continues that tradition, but honing areas that needed attention such as the AF tracking system and the video capability. The increased resolution and the clean images it produces all set off a well-rounded package that comes very close indeed to challenging very much more expensive kit.
Image quality is unsurprisingly excellent
Ultimately the E-P5 joins the E-M5 as a fantastic compact system camera, albeit again a rather pricey one. It's different enough to its older sibling to warrant careful consideration - smaller, lighter, in some ways more flexible, and with some genuinely useful extra features - so much so that we can recommend the new Olympus E-P5 just as highly as our favourite compact system camera of 2012.
Beautifully-styled and built, with lots of external controls
The E-P5 is the most substantial re-working of the original PEN model, and it's the most impressive yet. It produces the same excellent image quality as the E-M5 and has a proper two-dial control system. This, combined with a better touch screen and arguably the prettiest PEN body, make it a more attractive and more complete camera than the series has seen before.
Excellent image quality, Excellent colour reproduction
The Olympus PEN E-P5 sits at the top of the Olympus PEN range and is the desirable premium mirrorless camera, while lacking weather sealing of the OM-D, the additional features and high IQ from the OM-D should make the E-P5 top of the list for a mirrorless camera. The VF-4 EVF (electronic viewfinder) with a high resolution, large view, and rapid refresh is an excellent bit of kit and well worth adding to the E-P5, making it a real pleasure to shoot with.
Super-fast autofocus, responsive touchscreen
Substance and style meld into one excellent camera. If you're after a compact system camera without a built-in viewfinder then the E-P5 is as good as they come. If a viewfinder is essential then the VF-4 accessory is great, but it might make better financial sense to buy an OM-D E-M5 instead.
Attractive retro design, Efficient and intuitive controls
All the staffers who had a chance to try out the E-P5 loved it, and we were sad to see it leave our hands. It's nicely designed, has a ton of features, and produces really nice images. The noise filter is a bit aggressive that results in less-than-sharp images, but this is easily fixable by adjusting the settings to your liking. The E-P5 is a camera that will do really well in any number of shooting situations, as long as you can handle the price tag.
Delivers excellent image quality
Ultimately, we prefer the X-A1 to the X-M1, as it delivers the same handling, features and performance, and, crucially, very similar image quality at a lower price. This is turn mitigates some of the issues that we had with the X-M1, principally concerning the lack of a viewfinder, so much so that we'd recommend that you save your cash and choose the X-A1 rather than the X-Trans, X-M1 version.
Most affordable Fuji CSC, Natural, vibrant images, Tilting LCD
Most photographers will tell you that image quality is their biggest consideration when selecting a camera, but the build and functionality of the camera are also key factors along with the price. Many manufacturers reduce the functionality and build quality of their more entry-level cameras in order to keep cost down, but Fuji is in the unusual position of being able to achieve the same thing while keeping these two elements the same.
Impressive performance, Outstanding detail and ISO performance
The Fujifilm X-A1 delivers an excellent standard of image quality, is an attractively designed camera and has a strong level of performance. While the lenses in the X series might not be the cheapest on the market, the X-A1 is well worthy of consideration in the entry-level CSC market.
Very good value for money, Excellent noise performance
The 16-50mm OIS kit lens, despite being a kit lens, delivers excellent image quality with a useful wide-angle to telephoto zoom range and includes a good sized lens hood. The combination of this lens and the compact body makes for a compelling package, with the added bonus of a good 3inch tilting screen and built in Wi-Fi connectivity.
Entry-level looks lavish and feels flimsy
When we reviewed the X-M1, we concluded that it was a camera with an excellent sensor in a chintzy body. The X-A1 keeps the same cheap suit, drops in a marginally inferior sensor, and charges you $200 less. Is that a good thing? It depends on what you're shopping for.
Very good camera
I have not used a DSLR before and was in the market to get a camera that is comparable to SLR. My wife wanted something that is not too big to carry around. My previous camera was a Canon S90, which is good, but I wanted something better than that. Picture quality in NEX 5T is very good, it is easy to handle like a point and shoot. I read some complaints about Sony's confusing menu, but I didn't have any problems with it.
CMOS image sensor helps with low light results
If you're someone who purchased last year's Sony NEX-5R ILC model, you aren't going to want to upgrade the recently released NEX-5T, as the two cameras very similar. The NEX-5T introduces NEC wireless capabilities to this family of ILC models, but otherwise the 5R and 5T are basically the same camera. That doesn't mean the Sony NEX-5T isn't a great camera.
Excellent all-round compact system camera
Ultimately the new Sony NEX-5T is once again a likable and easy to recommend compact system camera which literally feels better balanced with the 16-50mm lens. Still Highly Recommended then, but we'd expect to see next year's inevitable update make some real strides forward.
Comfortable to hold, Extremely compact with 16-50mm lens
The Sony NEX-5T is one of the more compact mirrorless cameras available, particularly considering it has an APS-C CMOS sensor. For a smaller mirrorless camera you would have normally had to look at the smaller sensor Nikon 1 series, however there is now the option of the Panasonic Lumix GM1 with Micro Four Thirds sensor, and generally smaller Micro Four Thirds lenses.
Superior stills and videos, Advanced Hybrid AF, Built-in Wi-Fi/NFC
It's easy recommending the Sony NEX-5T. It grabs images that are this close to Fujifilm CSCs using the X-Trans CMOS sensor. Since Sony supplies chips for practically everyone, they could even be the same imaging device but we slightly prefer the photos of the X-M1, which are just a bit sharper thanks to the Fujifilm glass. Where Sony beats Fujifilm - and practically everyone else - is its 60p videos that seem to jump off the screen.
Solid image quality and low light performance
All in all, if you're an existing NEX-5R user, we see absolutely no reason for you to make that upgrade. However, the NEX-5T will make a compelling option for someone looking to make an upgrade from a compact camera, with its combination of good size and image quality, coupled with those nifty PlayMemories apps. But be warned, if you're a fan of touchscreen operation, I'm afraid the 5T isn't going to cut it.
