The market is pretty saturated with USB-only drives from a variety of manufacturers. Price per gigabyte and speed have become paramount concerns, and the only technical way to compare the contenders. The My Passport for Mac stacks up well against competing drives, producing some of the best times we've seen in a USB-only drive. It has comparatively strong pricing (though it's by no means the cheapest on the market), and it has a solid warranty behind it.
Works great on a pc and mac
I purchased this external drive to back-up my images - but without using back-up software, however, and in that regard this Toshiba External Hard Drive works perfectly (I merely copy/paste files). It does not 'force' you to install the back-up software, which is what I wanted -- in fact, it does not even ask, which is perfect!
Surprisingly little noise during operation
The G-DRIVE Mini from G-Technologies (Hitachi) is a nice addition to any notebook computer needing extra or backup storage although more so for Mac users than PC users with the FireWire 800 interface being the best option for data speeds.
Fast, efficient storage for Macs and PC's
It's hard to make any hard disk stand out from the crowd these days, but the Backup Plus provides fast, efficient storage for Macs and PCs, along with useful software that keeps your photos safe even if you upload them onto Facebook straight from your phone.
Fast, light and reasonably compact
As a portable hard drive, we actually can't fault the Seagate. It's quick and simple to use. Windows 7 recognises it with no problems, and there's no drivers to install - at least, none that require the user intervene. It's quick, light and simple to use. So when it comes to storage, it's all good.
The social and backup apps are a little less impressive. They work, but the reduced image sizes on downloaded images doesn't impress us.
Solid, reliable hard drive, great price
Bought this for $90 and it works right out of the box. I had owned another red Canvio 1 TB Toshiba portable hard drive and wanted another one. This is not as stylish as the red one and has no pattern just plain black but who cares about that. You get 937GB of storage, USB 2.0 backwards compatible, that's how I am using it with a Win7 netbook. Software is great, I would recommend this for $90 as all other 1TB portable hard drives are over $120 at least.
The Toshiba Canvio 500GB is a very good performer. It sports simple yet elegant looks and the build quality is good. It comes with a drive with free fall sensor for extra protection of your data. The drive comes with NTI BackupNow EZ software to take care of your backup needs and the 500GB capacity is sufficient for most backup purposes. It does not come with a backup button, but we won't hold that against this drive, as it is basically a non-issue in such portable drives.
Very small hardware profile, easy to transport
The Toshiba Canvio is a USB 2.0, portable external hard drive released in April 2010. It utilizes a compact and lightweight design that weighs less than 6.3 ounces. Available in four SATA HDD sizes from 500GB to 1TB, the Canvio is USB 2.0 plug-n-play compatible with both Windows and Macintosh operating systems.
Best upgrade I have ever made to a computer
This noticeably sped up my HP laptop computer, especially start-up (boot-up) time (about 25 seconds now) and wake up time (2 to 4 seconds). I replaced a 500 gig hard drive with this 256 gig SSD. Don't do this unless you are comfortable re-installing your computer system, although you won't need to reinstall it: there is a better way. The process is greatly simplified if you have an external USB-SATA connector and are comfortable cloning a disk drive.
