Overall performance is slow
Western Digital's 4TB My Book World Edition II NAS device is an easy and reasonably cheap way to store large amounts of data in a central location. Its overall performance is slow, but for tasks where speed isn't critical this NAS device is a decent choice.
Speedy file read times
The competitively priced Western Digital My Book Live Duo is a two-drive network attached storage (NAS) device that offers an astounding 4TB of storage capacity. It's very easy to use and offers speedy file read times, but it does lack some features and the latest USB 3.0 connectivity.
Surprisingly little noise during operation
The G-DRIVE Mini from G-Technologies (Hitachi) is a nice addition to any notebook computer needing extra or backup storage although more so for Mac users than PC users with the FireWire 800 interface being the best option for data speeds.
Works well so far, with minor quirks
After doing a lot of on-line research and reading review upon review, I decided I didn't need a portable backup hard drive, I didn't need it to match room decor, wasn't going to be impressed by its sleek styling, etc, etc-- I just wanted a backup hard drive that could back up my Macs. Period. It had to be for Macs--not PCs. I didn't want the hassle. Western Digital looked to be just what I needed and I'm not in the least disappointed with this product. In fact I purchased two, the other a 2TB.
Great combo mobile drive,
I have been owning some rugged drives already for the past years and have never been disappointed. I use them at work to exchange large files between PCs and Macs and the Rugged Triple USB3.0 is the best version so far as it is the fastest on Mac with FireWire 800 and fastest on PCs with USB 3.0. It is more than 3 times faster on PC thanks to the SuperSpeed USB 3.0. The product is great and secure with the rubber sleeve and anti shock design.
Waste of Time and Money
While this is a perfectly good external drive it is advertised to do several other things as well. I bought it at a higher than average price because of all the extra features and great appearance but afer doing so here is what it actually does
Act as a USB HUB to connect printers and other peripheral USB devices - After 3 calls to IOMEGA support I was told this is not possible even though it is advertised to do so on their own website.
Veteran Mac User - Solved Problem, Works Great Now
Another Mac reviewer noted the drive would fall into sleep mode before back up could be completed. Happened to me as well, no matter how I formatted the drive, or whatever software strategy I used. I now have got it working. What was the problem?
My Mac G5 Desktop under Tiger would cannot juggle two firewire devices at once. When I unplugged one, and then tried to format a bootable drive, it was able to format successfully and I was able to boot my back up clone.
Works with Mac and Windows OS
Though other external hard drives offer a preset menu of ports, the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex cuts costs by letting you pick from a buffet of "personality cables" so that you buy only the connections that suit your system profile. We applaud Seagate for making data backups easier than ever, and recommend the FreeAgent GoFlex external hard drive for extra data storage now and easy upgrades in the future.
Slower write speed with USB 2.0 Upgrade Cable
The Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex PRO 500GB is a unique product since it allows you to be used with different data cables, instantly upgrading the interface in the process. So you can choose the one that suits you better. The dock is not just an aesthetic add-on, but is very much functional as well as convenient. The casing looks good and is strong, but it does gather fingerprints rather fast.
Clearly, the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Pro portable drives perform well, and will deliver fine if you leave it plugged into your chosen module on your desk. But the design is a bit kludgy, sadly. Unless you require the modular flexibility this drive provides, competing models may make a more compelling choice - especially if you need to use the drive in a dock, and then remove it from the dock to take it along with you.
Upgradable Interface Options
To be honest, we never expected such flexible and versatile storage solution options, but the Seagate GoFlex series definitely took us by surprise. While we were kind of skeptical initially of this feature, once we started using it, we realized its advantages immediately.
