Practical stand, connections and hardware features
On the whole, LG has done an excellent job with the 27" Flatron 27EA83 "ColorPrime" monitor. It's stylish, practical and ensures first-rate colour fidelity. It missed out on a five-star review for its relatively low contrast and a response time that's not fast enough for gamers.
I purchased this monitor to hook up to a retina MacBook Pro. Although it is not the super high-res of the retina, it displays the colors well and looks great. My only problem with it is that although the screen looks like it goes almost to the edge and the bevel is so small, there is still about 1/4" of black around the sides and top so that the image does not go all the way to the bevel. It's not a huge deal, but it would be awesome if it did.
I bought this as a 2nd monitor since I do a lot of work where I need the desktop space (writing a dissertation). This one blows the doors off of my main monitor (Asus VW266H) in terms of color, contrast, and brightness. I did not expect this to be so nice. It's very thin and light and thanks to LEDs it uses very little power (cool to the touch, front and back).
Was using a Apple cinema 30" for some time running 2560/1600 resolution and it was a very good monitor for many years. I used the Apple for gaming primarily. The Samsung is a bit smaller but you would never know the difference after having it on for an hour. I'm running the native 2560/1440 resolution and its simply the most amazing looking monitor I've ever seen. I was debating going with the Dell 30" but once I saw this it wasn't close.
Impressive eco credentials
The E231W is an impressively flexible and eco conscious display, but it isn't complemented with similarly impressive performance. While it is possible to establish a good image through manual adjustment, many of the environment and automatic settings can be frustrating to work with, so if hassle-free picture quality is more important that the other benefits on offer, it may disappoint.
