Nikon D40x Digital Camera - Review Gist

Out of the box, the body of the D40X felt comparatively light at 522g. The second most significant improvement is its speed of 3FPS in burst mode, over the 2.5 FPS in the D40. Good build quality. The D40x produces superb colour images, but why is it so expensive?

The internal buffer in the Nikon D40x is quite large. It's remarkable that Nikon managed to combine the increase in pixels with an increase in quality. Nikon is lonely at the top here. The light metering system truly impresses when it comes to flash. Although I want to remark that using wireless flash is limited. Operation is effortlessly simple, even for those who never worked with a DSLR camera. *

Image quality is excellent. Nikon have chosen to make it with a modest zoom range -- a mere 27 to 82mm in film terms -- and f3.5 to f5.6 aperture. *

The D40x's colour rendition is impressive. The colours are exceptionally rich, saturated and yet very natural looking. The AF is pretty quick in action and the Nikon's 3fps Continuous Shooting mode is adequate for most action sequences. The viewfinder is unusually large, bright and clear. *

Color reproduction from the Nikon D40X was excellent. The thing I was concerned with is that the hand-grip, though comfortable, wasn't large enough to fit my whole hand, and the camera still had just a single jog dial for shutter speed and aperture size. Noticable flare , quite strong in direct sunlight at the 18-55mm's telephoto setting when there's significant contrast in the corners. It's the Nikon D40x's excellent image quality that makes recommending this little digital SLR so easy.
