very compact lens

DCRP Review: Nikon D40x:DcResource

Both ISO 100 and 200 look good, and you don't start to see the any detail loss until ISO 400, and even then, it's not much. Deleting photos is easy, as there's a button right on the camera for that purpose. It's nice to see have a dedicated AF-assist lamp instead of having
to pop up the flash like on some other D-SLRs. You've got the whole set of manual exposure controls, plus white balance and focus. The LCD is also bright, sharp, with vivid colors. The help butt... *

Picture review in bright conditions is more difficult

Nikon D40x:DigitalCameraReview

The default space provides deeply saturated colors and seems particularly strong in the blues and greens. Colors are rich at default settings and there are a bunch of internal image optimizing settings to tweak the color if default is not your cup of tea. One bit of bad news on the D40x flash – the maximum flash sync speed is down to 1/200 th of a second from 1/500 th on the D40. *

"
Matrix metering on the D40x did a pretty good job overall"
"
The 18-55 kit lens was quite good"
"
Shutter performance is likewise very good"
"
“graphic” menu colors are harder to see in bright light."

The end result is a very good camera that takes great pictures

Nikon D40X:PCWorld

The D40x's only downsides will seem minor to most inexperienced digital SLR users. Excellent image quality. The end result is a very good camera that takes great pictures, perfect for casual shooters who are newcomers to digital SLRs, but who want a little more resolution than a typical entry-level model would provide. The camera's image quality is superb, especially from ISO 100 to ISO 800; color noise increases when you shoot at ISO 1600 or 3200, but that's a normal trait of digital SLRs i... *

The bright and clear 2.5-inch LCD on the back is viewable in all but the brightest sunlight."

Out of the box, the body of the D40X felt comparatively light at 522g.

Nikon D40X:Tech2

Out of the box, the body of the D40X felt comparatively light at 522g. The second most significant improvement is its speed of 3FPS in burst mode, over the 2.5 FPS in the D40. Good build quality. Considering that the D40X is one of the cheapest new D-SLRs available in the market, features such as dual LCD display, image stabilization and sensor cleaning are lacking, but it does have a few improvements to make it a better purchase over the D40. Lacks some of the newer D-SLR features. Great im... *

"
The viewfinder is slightly cramped"
"
When you first pick up the D40x, you will likely be struck by how good the camera feels in your hand"
"
the D40x has an excellent menu system that's very easy to read on its gorgeous 2.5-inch LCD"

The D40x shows you sample pictures for each setting, which is very handy if you're just getting acquainted with concepts such as ISO and white balance"

The AF is pretty quick in action

Nikon D40x Review:TechRadar.com

The D40x produces superb colour images, but why is it so expensive?
"
The AF is pretty quick in action"
"
impressive battery life"

the Nikon D40x is a very fine and smart DSLR camera that offers a lot of quality for a low price.

Nikon D40x Review:letgodigital

The internal buffer in the Nikon D40x is quite large. It's remarkable that Nikon managed to combine the increase in pixels with an increase in quality. Nikon is lonely at the top here. The light metering system truly impresses when it comes to flash. Although I want to remark that using wireless flash is limited. Operation is effortlessly simple, even for those who never worked with a DSLR camera. *

The essential functions are generally good

DPexpert: [ REVIEW--NIKON D40X digital single lens reflex ]:dpexpert

Image quality is excellent. Nikon have chosen to make it with a modest zoom range -- a mere 27 to 82mm in film terms -- and f3.5 to f5.6 aperture. *

impressive battery life

Nikon D40x:TechRadar.com

The D40x's colour rendition is impressive. The colours are exceptionally rich, saturated and yet very natural looking. The AF is pretty quick in action and the Nikon's 3fps Continuous Shooting mode is adequate for most action sequences. The viewfinder is unusually large, bright and clear. *

In Short An ideal first DSLR thanks to onscreen help. It takes great shots and the battery lasts for ages.

the D40x still lacks an integral focus motor, so can only auto focus using lenses with their own motors"

the D40x is a compact, solidly built digital SLR with a plethora of features.

Nikon D40x:Maclife.com

The NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) RAW files that come out of this camera are stunning, and the JPEGs are also sharp, showing fewer JPEG artifacts than we're accustomed to with consumer cameras. The 2.5-inch LCD is crisp as ice and was visible even in bright daylight. *

very good 3x zoom lens"
"
It is very difficult to draw distinctions between the various 10MP DSLRs currently available, but based on my subjective opinion of the photos that I was able to take with it I think the D40x has, by a narrow margin, the best image quality of any that I've seen so far, crucially slightly superior to the EOS 400D."

easy-to-use menus

Nikon D40x:cameralabs

The crops are sharp and clean while the increase in sensitivity to 200 ISO hasn't had a detrimental impact on noise levels. The Nikon D40x delivers very clean images at 100 and 200 ISO with only the slightest texture from noise and noise reduction visible at 400 ISO. The size of the thumbnails is adjustable, and there's also a "details view" which displays shooting data next to your photos. The retouched image is saved as a new file, so you're not destroying your original image. Deleting photos is easy, as there's a button right on the camera for that purpose. It's nice to see have a dedicated AF-assist lamp instead of having to pop up the flash like on some other D-SLRs. Noticable flare , quite strong in direct sunlight at the 18-55mm's telephoto setting when there's significant contrast in the corners. It's the Nikon D40x's excellent image quality that makes recommending this little digital SLR so easy. The uncorrected resolution figures are 1,812 line widths per picture height in the horizontal direction (corresponding to the vertically-oriented edge), and 1,807 lines along the vertical axis (corresponding to the horizontally-oriented edge), both very good values."
"
Shutter lag is quite good on average, and "prefocus" time (half-pressing and holding down the Shutter button before the final exposure) is also above average at 0.095 second."
"
The screen on the D40x is great for viewing photos, and its size and resolution make the menu screens both attractive and easy to read as well."
"
Photo can be captured before menus are active."
"
the LCD is slow to refresh as you change settings."
"
the Nikon D40x's low light performance at ISO 1,600 is startling, even without noise reduction turned on."
