Nokia N95 Cellular Phone - Review Gist

The North American Edition of the Nokia N95 brings some notable additions, including 3G support and better performance, to make this powerful smart phone even better. However, it'll still leave a deep gouge in your wallet.

Sure, the N95 is a perfectly fine phone, but that's not why it's so expensive. For such a groundbreaking device, the N95's looks, at first glance, are that of an ordinary Nokia slider phone. Voice quality was good through both an HSDPA-capable AT&T SIM card and a T-Mobile SIM. The quad-band N95 gets very good reception on both Cingular's and T-Mobile's networks. *

Nokia N95's glamorous presence along with the latest bunch of cameraphones marks the beginning of difficult times for common small compact cameras. It has been quite some time since the Nokia N95 mobile phone was put on the market. During the Mobile World Congress 2008 in Barcelona the successor was already announced: the Nokia N96. In the meantime Nokia have put an 8GB version of the Nokia N95 on the market. After its appearance it turned out that the N95 had some minus points. Call recipients said our voices sounded clear and loud. This is true voice recognition and you won't record voice tags-- nice. Each row of keys has a pronounced soft ridge running horizontally, center raised markers on the 5 key and a raised line at the edges of the number pad all of which make for a good "dial by feel" experience. Overall the N95 is a worthy flagship for Nokia's N-Series lineup. We did find that holding the phone one handed was slightly unbalanced, and made our hand ache after awhile. The Nokia N95 was hurt by the poor design of its keypad. The soft keys are very narrow, and provide very little tactile feedback when pressed. The phone's camera, with its high resolution and Carl Zeiss lens, is one of the better in-phone models we've seen. *

The coloring is immaculate, and the display is clear and crisp. *

As a low-cost navigation system it is definitely superb, and perfect for those that only occasionally travel into unfamiliar territories. Sound quality from the music player is very good. *

A quick glance at the specifications section at the end of this review shows that this is a world-class phone. The N95 has this really cool feature where if you slide the display to the top, you get the number pad and can treat it like a normal phone. As a phone the N95 is just solid. The arrangement of the buttons are fine for all except the most demanding of tasks (games, and sometimes web browsing). The camera and video facilities are also complimented by a comprehensive picture / video editing system allowing you to adjust and touch up your material. One of the main selling points is the excellent 5 mega pixel digital camera, which has taken mobile phone cameras to a new level. *

The primary 5 megapixel camera can shoot at up to 2582×1944 and record 30fps video at up to 640×480. It has a rubbery feel and really feels great in your hand. The video works great too and is just as easy to shoot video. *

A true heavyweight in every sense of the word, and a hugely impressive smartphone

This phone has stereo speakers on it and the sound is very clear and crisp considering the size. Call quality was great, camera quality was great, GPS and internet both worked well on it. The N95 packs in just about every feature under the sun. Most are welcome additions, but there are a few issues that prevent this from being a great smart phone.

However the images are startlingly good from a phone, as is the video it can capture and the high intensity white LED that acts as a flash. *

The video camera records at VGA resolution at 30fps with lesser resolutions available for MMS and the like. Colors are fairly accurate and vivid and there's relatively little of the usual camera phone blockiness. *

From the back, the Nokia N95 looks just like a slim point-and-shoot camera. *

With a 5-megapixel camera, advanced multimedia capabilities, and GPS, there's no doubt that the Nokia N95 is one of the most feature-packed smart phones to date, but poor battery life and sluggish performance makes it hard to justify the high price tag.
