Summary

the level of detail in the image is acceptable.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-M1:PCMAG

Contrast was good, with even illumination and no significant purple fringing. The 640-by-480, 30-fps video clips we took were also good overall. We found both our daylight and flash test shots good to very good overall. *

produced pleasing images with good color

Sony Cyber Shot DSC-M1:CNet

We're glad that Sony avoided the confusing 3D menu that comes with its camcorders, instead going with a simple lineup of settings that you can deftly tweak using the four-way selector at the bottom of the camera's grip. The M1's brushed-black-metal surface feels good in your hand, and at 7.5 ounces with battery and media installed, the camera is hefty enough to not feel cheap but light enough that it won't tire you out during longer shoots. The camera's proprietary InfoLithium battery held up quite well in our battery tests, powering the M1 for more than 1,000 shots before it died."

normal mode records a movie before and after the still image

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-M1:DcResource

Image quality on the M1 is just fair. Images are well-exposed with good color, low noise, and very little purple fringing. The lens is on the slow side, with a maximum aperture of F3.5 - F4.4. Shutter lag was very low, even at slower shutter speeds. In record mode, you can use the top and bottom buttons for taking a still picture and movie, respectively. I found it awkward to hold and use, with poorly placed controls and microscopic buttons. The 2.5" LCD display is nice, though, and it's vie... *

you could get a nicer camera (in all respects except for total movie recording time) for less money -- so my advice is to pass on the M1."

The whole battery compartment is poorly designed: getting the battery in and out is difficult, and the darn door doesn't like to close easily."

overall our test images were sharp and meticulously detailed.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-M1:Laptopmag

Shoots smooth video, takes crisp five-megapixel stills, and slips into your front pocket with ease.
"
The DSC-M1's five-megapixel photo capabilities are very similar to those of the fashionable DSC-T1."
"
