GPS has a variety of applications on land, at sea and in the air. The most common airborne applications are for navigation by general aviation and commercial aircraft. At sea, GPS is also typically used for navigation by recreational boaters, commercial fishermen, and professional mariners. Land-based applications are more diverse. GPS is now commonplace in automobiles as well. Some basic systems are in place and provide emergency roadside assistance at the push of a button (by transmitting your current position to a dispatch center). More sophisticated systems that show your position on a street map are also available.

A Desktop's form factor describes the physical size and shape of the system. In general, towers and larger form factors offer more space for add-ons and cost less than smaller counterparts.

Most PDAs have touch screens that require a stylus to enter data. You can also find devices with a Jog Dial, that allows you to scroll through pages and make selection quickly. Still other PDAs have full keyboards.

Most of the new sophisticated systems show your position on a map. The Basemap GPS unit will show interstates, highways, lakes, rivers, railroads, cities, airport location etc. The Mapping GPS units have the ability to download detailed maps from PC.

A receiver is often described by its number of channels: this signifies how many satellites it can monitor simultaneously. The more the number of channels, the better the accuracy - but only to a point. The maximum amount of satellites a reciever can realistically track is around 20, which is good enough for most consumer gps use cases. Hence more than 20 channels are typically of no benefit.

A grid is a map coordinating system that uses square zones to relate positioning measurements for establishing points of reference. Some systems will have (multiple) preinstalled grids of countries built into the GPS OS.
