Traditional TVs have an aspect ratio of 4:3 (squarish), which represents the ratio of the width of the screen to the height. Widescreen TVs have an aspect ratio of 16:9 (also known as "letterbox", a rectangular shape). If you plan to watch a lot of DVD movies on your TV, you might want to consider a widescreen TV, as many DVDs support the 16:9 aspect ratio. If you have a widescreen TV and are viewing standard programming, the picture will appear in letterbox format, meaning that the picture will appear with black boxes on either side or the top and bottom of the screen.

Maximum Screen Resolution indicates the maxiumum possible sharpness and clarity of an image that a monitor can display, measured in number of dots (pixels). For example, a screen with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels can display up to 640 distinct dots on each of 480 lines, or about 300,000 pixels. The resolution translates into different dots per inch (dpi) measurements depending on the size of the screen. For example, a 15-inch VGA monitor (640 x 480 pixels) displays about 50 dots per inch. The higher the monitor's resolution, the greater the sharpness and clarity.

It translates to the amount of time it takes for a liquid crystal cell to go from active (black) to inactive (white) and back to active (black) again. It is measured in milliseconds or (ms). Lower numbers mean faster transitions (eg. 16 ms is faster than 25 ms.) and therefore less visible image artifacts.
