  • The Surface Pro 2 is Microsoft's updated slate tablet that's improved in every performance vector. It packs ultrabook-class components into an innovative form factor with a sturdy chassis. Add in a wide range of useful accessories, and the Surface Pro 2 is the Windows 8 tablet to beat.

  • Thanks to its much-improved battery life and fast performance, the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 is a compelling tablet and laptop in one device.

  • There are still some rough edges, but the Surface Pro 2 is an outstanding hybrid in the true meaning of the word. Nothing matches the flexibility it offers and it finally has the battery life to deliver on its promise.

  • The ATIV Tab 3 will suit everyone who is looking for an uncompromisingly good mini-keyboard in connection with an economic as well as a handy Windows tablet. Users who are expecting the power of a laptop should back away and take a device with an Intel Core processor. A list of appropriate contenders can be found in the sidebar; we deem the Intel Core systems to be particularly recommendable.

  • The Microsoft Surface Pro delivers Ultrabook performance and a full HD screen in a tablet design, but short battery life holds it back.

  • The Surface Pro hints at genius but implodes under the weight of its own ambition. But the potential is plain to see. It's a welcome and compelling alternative to an Apple and Google dominated future. Make it lighter and last longer, however, and Microsoft could have a winner on its hands in future.

  • The Surface Pro is a lightweight Windows 8 PC that runs all your applications and any browser you want, that you can use as a tablet with touchscreen controls and a fantastic pen, or as a notebook, by snapping on a keyboard. It's a great machine at a reasonable price.

  • The Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 10 Tablet is a fairly well-built Windows slate tablet, but it does little to distinguish itself in a crowded field of competitors.

  • The Lenovo Miix is more than capable of serving the needs of some people, but it's a definite niche; ultrabooks will be better for many. However, it's light, flexible and corporate-friendly, and its one of the better machines of its kind.

  • A lightweight, long-lasting tablet that suffices for both work and leisure, although the absence of a trackpad or stylus is an oversight.

  • While the screen could be better, the Acer Iconia W3-810 offers a full Windows 8 experience, Microsft Office and long battery life in a portable 8-inch package.

  • The smaller 8-inch Windows 8 tablet is a form worth exploring, and the Acer Iconia W3 can be fun to use, but it's also buggy and held back by shortcuts and lackluster features.

  • The overall performance of the small Iconia is very good. It offers long battery runtimes, has a decent build quality and can execute x86 applications. The CPU performance is not overwhelming but sufficient for tablet applications and simple x86 applications. Acer had to make some cuts to achieve the low price of 329 Euros (~$433), especially the bad viewing angle stability of the display is not up-to-date anymore. The 32 GB storage is also too small, we recommend the 64 GB version.
