In February 2008, Nikon launched an addition to the D-series family: the Nikon D60, which shares a semblance with the previous D40. This report will cover the key features and innovations packed in this DSLR. Also, we will gather 34 reviews made by experts at Imaging Resource, Cnet, Digital Camera Resource Page, PC Magazine, Steve's Digicams, Digital Camera Review and etc. Finally, we offer you tips in the 'Buying Advice' section.
With the D60, Nikon claimed to have developed a DSLR that entirely suits amateur photographers. It has inherited the simplicity of the D40 and some smart enhancements. One of these is its 10.2 megapixel CCD Sensors which primarily guarantees that photos are of high resolution.
The company also takes pride in its EXPEED image processing concept which enhances colors and tones to yield notably vivid pictures. Moreover, image exposure is kept balanced through the D60's 3-D Color Matrix Metering II.
Aside from these, the D60 boasts of the following features:
1) In-camera Retouch Menu which allows users to correct images before they could even upload the files on the computer. It includes cropping, image overlay, red-eye correction, monochrome settings, filter effects, color intensifier filters, NEF (RAW) processing and cross star.
2) AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR image stabilization lens
3) 2.5-inch LCD screen with automatic detection of vertical or horizontal orientation
4) Image Sensor Cleaning function and Airflow Control System to prevent dust build-up
5) Active D-lighting for better shadow and highlight detail in high-contrast shooting conditions
6) Shooting Modes: Auto, Auto (Flash Off), Portrait, Night Portrait, Close-up, Landscape, Sports and Child
The sharpness and color vividness of images captured with the D60 were highly praised by experts from Imaging Resource, Digital Camera Resource Page, PC Magazine, Digital Camera Review, Photoxels and Infosync. Moreover, reviewers claimed that blurring caused by camera shake was effectively prevented, as credited by Tiger Direct to the D60's Vibration Reduction system. Digital Camera Review also affirms that the image quality is consistent in various shooting conditions, owing to its smart Auto WB function.
Only Digital Camera Resource Page remarked about the D60's stop-movie feature and considered it 'unique'.
From exposure details, focusing accuracy and flash compensation, the D60 met unanimous approval from experts at Imaging Resource, Digital Camera Resource Page, PC Magazine, Photoxels and Cameralabs among others. Steve's Digicams cited the 3D Color Matrix Metering II for providing appropriate exposures. Additionally, Digital Camera Review continues to laud the D60's lenses for a smooth and quiet zooming. According to reviewers at Ars Technica, the lens is built with Silent Wave motor, ED glass, and a 7-bladed Aperture for enhanced focusing, high resolution images and achieving bokeh respectively. A shutter lag of only 0.4 in bright lighting conditions and 0.7 second in dim ones was noted by Cnet.
However, Digital Photography Review and Photo.net found the lack of a built-in focusing motor a drawback for the D60.
All reviewers, particularly at Digital Camera Review, Imaging Resource, Cnet, Digital Camera Resource Page and Let's Go Digital, agreed that the D60's user interface was smart and very convenient for users. According to Steve's Digicams, both amateur and professional photographer would enjoy using the D60 especially during long shooting durations because it's light and compact. Moreover, the tiltable LCD proved to be an added convenience, as claimed by Ars Technica.
There were assorted reviews made regarding the D60's ISO performance but they were generally positive feedbacks. Digital Camera Resource Page was highly impressed with the minimal noise in settings as high as ISO 3200 and even at ISO 6400, images were of 'acceptable' standards. Although PC Mag captured grainy photos at ISO 3200, the noise levels were tolerable. The same goes in ISO 800, as noted by Steve's Digicams, ZD.net and Cnet.
Imaging Resource, Digital Camera Resource Page, Steve's Digicams and Digital Camera Review commonly reported that salient shooting information was displayed clearly in the D60's bright 2.5-inch LCD. Also, Ars Technica commented that photographers are given better flexibility through its tiltable LCD.
The D60's optical viewfinder was aptly large and bright according to dpexpert and Digital Camera Review. Steve's Digicams claimed that the penta-DACH mirror type viewfinder allowed for an estimated 95% view of the shooting frame.
After summing up a wide range of reviews, it is concluded that the Nikon D60 is a relatively simple DSLR with multiple useful features.
The D60's impressive performance is quite evident in the high-resolution photos it delivers. Fine image quality is consistently maintained in mid-range ISO settings and in higher ones, noise levels are just acceptable. Indeed, this model has been equipped with the required technology to guarantee color and focus accuracy. And all these features are conveniently packed in a light and compact unit that's easily handled by both novice and advanced photographers.
Although the Nikon D60 possesses traits sought by seasoned photographers, it is primarily fit for photo enthusiasts aiming to level up with relative ease. It is among the leading entry-level DSLRs in the market.
While the Nikon D60 is a good bargain in itself, you may also want to check out the Canon EOS 500D Rebel T1i. Both have excellent imaging performance but the latter takes a huge lead in the competition when it comes to video function as the EOS 500D captures videos in full high-definition. Its ISO performance is also more impressive as noise levels are effectively minimized through its built-in four-level high ISO speed noise reduction system and DIGIC 4 image processor.
If you opt for another Nikon model, the Nikon D90 is a good alternative. Although it's more expensive than the D60, it captures exceptionally high-definition videos and clean images even at higher settings which explains the price difference.
