the image was sharp with excellent color reproduction.

Menus are simple, though mostly icon-based, but the simplicity belies the camera's fairly advanced features, which include a real-time histogram, manual modes, white-balance adjustments, and exposure compensation settings. *

typical shutter lag was acceptable, but not outstanding.

Sony Cyber Shot DSC-W1:CNet

Sony's automatic noise reduction feature at slow shutter speeds seemed to counter the extra fuzziness that long exposures often produce. The menu displays are large and easy to read, too. *

"
manual exposure mode lets you directly set shutter speeds from 30 seconds to 1/1000 second, and your choice of two f-stops, which vary depending on the lens zoom setting."

this compact 5.1-megapixel photomachine is all camera, with enough manual settings to please nascent enthusiasts, and most of the automated features snapshooters can't live without."

small but efficient cursor key/set button cluster"

very good quality images

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W1:PCWorld Australia

Sony's Cyber-shot DSCW1 has most of what you could wish for in a compact, easy-to-use point-and-shoot.
"
very good quality images"
"
The camera is great for those travel events where getting a great shot is reduced to stopping, tripping the shutter, and then moving on again quickly."
"
The camera's focus control is comprehensive for a point-and-shoot: you get a manual focus (with five stepped distance settings); a centre-spot automatic focus; and a multipoint autofocus that displays green markers in the LCD to tell you exactly where in the scene the DSCW1 is focused--especially useful for macro photography or in other situations where you want to ensure that the primary subject does not end up blurry."
"
minimal shutter lag"
"
The DSCW1's full manual is limited but easy to use: pressing the top and bottom buttons on the four-way thumb pad sets the shutter speed; the right and left buttons let you pick between just two f-stops, which change as you zoom from wide angle to telephoto."

The photo that the W1 took is good

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W1:DcResource

The whole image has a "smooth" quality to it. Photos are quite sharp, colors are accurate, and noise levels are low. The W1 is PictBridge-enabled (as is the S500), allowing direct printing to compatible photo printers. The W1 moves between images extremely quickly in playback mode -- showing a low res version instantly, with the high res image showing up a second later. Despite not having a high resolution, the screen seemed plenty sharp to me, and motion was fluid as well. Quick presses of ... *

Quick presses of the buttons allow for precise lens movements."
"
fast focus and shot-to-shot speeds"
"
new Sony menu system"
"
The AF-assist lamp helped it focus in low light, though you'll have to rely on the optical viewfinder in those situations, as the LCD will be too dark."
"
It's also nice to see a compact camera that doesn't use a proprietary battery."
