NTSC is the American color television broadcast standard used to store video on VHS tapes. The other popular video standard is called PAL and is used largely in Europe. Even though both video standards give similar video performance - conversion from one format to the other can result in severe display defects in the final video. Consequently, it is critical that you choose the right standard compatible with the color TV you want to play your recording on.

The best NTSC camcorders typically also support the PAL standard for more flexibility.
