PAL is the predominant video standard for VHS tapes used largely in Europe. The corresponding popular standard for North America is called NTSC. Both standards give similar video performance even though they have a slight difference in frame rate. However conversion from either format can result in very visible video distortions. For the best quality it is critical that you choose the right standard compatible with the color TV you want to playback on.
The best PAL 3D camcorders and 2D camcorders also support the NTSC standard for more flexibility.
