The playable content such as movies and games are subject to digital rights and to manage them, the authorized content distributors control aspects such as release, release date, and price, according to the region.

To demarcate the availability of the content, DVDs are sometimes encoded to be played in specific regions. Such DVDs have region codes and the content can be accessed only on those compatible players. DVDs and the players may be marked with a code (single region), a combination of codes (multi-region), every code (all region) or no codes (region free).

Some of the DVD players are region-free and can play any type of disc ignoring the region codes.

The best DVD players for all regions play the discs that bear region 0 symbol and this means that you can access the disc contents limited to any region in the world.

Some of the best region-free DVDs can be bought from brands such as Toshiba, Sony and Philips for mostly under the $150 price range.

Check out more information about region codes at the footer below.

  • The Sony BDP-S5100 Blu-ray player offers a wealth of services and very good image quality for the money.

  • The Sony BDP-S5100 is a slick, versatile 3D Blu-ray player with killer web content and sumptuous HD pictures.

  • It costs a bit more than the other Sony Blu-Ray players, but not enough to break the bank. If you're buying this is conjunction with a new TV you won't even notice the price difference. Since the BDP-S5100 includes 3D playback and built-in Wi-Fi, we'd recommend that you choose this one instead of one of the cheaper models. It's always a good policy to future-proof yourself as much as possible when buying tech.

  • It's great to see Panasonic back challenging the likes of Denon, Marantz, and Onkyo with a high-end, audiophile-focused Blu-ray player, and thanks to its superlative picture and sound quality, coupled with a killer feature list, it's better value than the brands above can offer although true audiophiles might be put off by the lack of DVD-Audio and SACD playback. Overall though, the DMP-BDT500 is an accomplished Blu-ray player, truly worthy of its flagship status.

  • The DMP-BDT500 is a niche Blu-ray player in some senses. If you don't own home cinema kit and simply want to connect to a TV set, its extensive audio adjustment options aren't necessary: save your money and buy a cheaper Panasonic. The same's true if you're not into music, or prefer to use a separate component for music replay. But if you want one deck to do the lot, it's a must-try.

  • The Panasonic DMP-BDT500 marks a fine return to high-end Blu-ray for the Japanese brand. Its flagship disc spinner boasts a wide range of features, including Viera Connect, 3D support and DLNA streaming, not to mention its sophisticated audio components, robust build quality and generous connections.

  • Quite simply, the BDP-S790 is a brilliant Blu-ray player. Its top-drawer feature list (headlined by Sonyâ??s generous range of internet apps and futureproofed 4K upscaling), its slim, living room friendly design and nigh-on flawless pictures make this one of the best Blu-ray players around, if not the cheapest.

  • Based on the test results, the Sony BDP-S790 is a very good performer with regards to video processing and upscaling of standard definition DVD (which can also apply to internet and network streamed video content - minus any artifacts generated as a result of slow internet speeds), as well as deinterlacing 1080i content to 1080p, that can match a native 1080p video display.

  • Sony's latest, best Blu-ray player is a little pricier than the competition, but it has a few features that make it stand out from the crowd. We think Sony's hit a winner with the BDP-S790's speed and diverse range of features.

  • If you want 3D, the LG BP620 has most of the right features, but the absence of Amazon Instant and a dedicated Netflix button hurt its value a bit.

  • The LG BP620 is a strong 3D Blu-ray deck from LG. It delivers good picture quality and has a fairly comprehensive line-up of features for the price. It could be a little bit more responsive when it comes to the Smart apps, but overall it's a good option if you're looking for an inexpensive 3D Blu-ray player with integrated Wi-Fi.

  • The LG BP620 is one of the best budget Blu-ray players we've seen this year, with tons of features and fast performance for just $150.
